Fated to be One
M81 & M82 galaxies lie 12 Million light years away in the constellation of Ursa Major.
M81 otherwise known as Bodes Galaxy, is a grand design galaxy, but with a 70 million solar mass supermassive black hole at it's heart (Sag A* is 4.5) and has already begun to interact with M82.
M82 could be fairly said to be, a bit of a mess, an irregular galaxy classified as a starburst galaxy, mostly because of the huge shockwaves coming from it's recent close encounters with M81.
Gravitational shockwaves can bunch clouds of gas and dust together making them dense and more available for star formation. Most interacting galaxies and mergers result in a tremendous amount of star formation.
Just as the Milky Way and Andromeda galaxies are destined to join in the coming billion years, so too are M81 and M82. Raising the interesting thought that if an intelligent life was sitting in either galaxy right now, looking across the 12 million light years towards us, they too could be writing an almost similar article about the fate of our two galaxies, although I'd like to think, they'd not have referred to the Milky Way as "Messed Up" .. I guess they've yet to visit the planet Earth.
