I really, really like this.

So often in these teenage-protagonist-coming-of-age type stories it's just kind of a given that kids are part of the conflict. There will either be no adults around, or they won't know about it, or they'll just offer support in some way. But Eda couldn't be like that. Eda is far too close with Luz and far too motherly to stand by as she gets wrapped up in all this. For all her shenanigans, she's a responsible adult, and Luz's guardian, and she wants to keep her safe no matter what. Even if that means sending her away. Even if that means giving herself up.

I really, really like Eda.

I don’t know why some people in the fandom still don’t get this but it needs to be said. Pin has no power. She may be a lady but her will can be overruled by every ranked individual in that palace. It doesn’t matter what she wants. Her fighting was when she pleaded with her aunt. When she saw that didn’t work she accepted her fate because what else is she supposed to do? She’s just the poor orphan they took in. She has no agency. Stop blaming her for not acting like Anin when Anin has far more privilege and support than she has ever had.

Just look at the difference between how their mothers reacted to the news of them being together. Anins mother was overwhelmed by the idea of Anin giving up her title because she loves her so much she couldn’t bear the thought of of losing her. She accepted her almost immediately. Alternatively Pins’ mom slash aunt aka the only real family she has blamed her for the relationship, called her an ungrateful disgrace and said she would rather her die than have her be with Anin.

I love Anin but it’s easy to be bold when everyone around you listens to you, respects your opinion and encourages to be a free thinker even when that goes against societal expectations. It’s much harder to be bold when you grew up with a mother who beat you when your friend got herself hurt because she’s of higher rank.
