“This was the door to both sustenance and sanity. And we were each other’s key.” - Suzanne Collins, Mockingjay. It appears I never left this fandom… I guess I’ll be putting out my thoughts now, especially on Gale, since I feel the need to deconstruct a lot of the mainstream opinions on his character. Enjoy! Or maybe don’t, doesn’t matter to me lol.

Headcannon alphabet!
A- Annie cresta‘a love language is acts of service, she loves doing your hair if you’re struggling, or helping you clean your room if you have zero motivation.
B- Beetee: If you’re strategic like him, the two of you enjoy playing games like chess or solving puzzles together. These sessions often end in playful banter as you try to outwit each other.
C- Cato: If you’re a skilled fighter, Cato loves sparring with you. It’s one of his ways of bonding and showing his respect for your abilities, If you’re not as skilled, he becomes a surprisingly patient teacher, guiding you through combat techniques and encouraging you to push your limits.
D- 😓😓😓😓😓
E- Effie: Effie loves dressing you up and choosing outfits that complement both your personality and her signature style. She’ll insist on matching accessories and won’t rest until you’re satisfied with your look. Even if you’re more casual, she respects your style and always finds ways to make you feel special.
F- finnick: Finnick Odair, with all his charm and playful flirtation, holds a special softness just for you. Beneath the confident exterior, he treasures the moments where you truly see him for who he is—vulnerable, scarred, but loved. He adores when you play with his hair, your fingers running through the strands as he leans into your touch, his eyes closing in contentment. It’s in those quiet moments that he feels at peace, where his guarded heart is entirely yours. He loves the way you make him feel safe enough to shed his bravado, where simple acts—like you brushing his hair or tracing patterns on his hand—mean more to him than any grand gesture. Finnick finds comfort in your presence, and he cherishes when you’re close, pulling you into his arms after a nightmare or when the weight of the world feels too much. Your love has become a refuge for him, a reminder that despite everything he’s endured, he’s worthy of such simple, precious moments of happiness.
G- Gale Hawthorne’s: strength is undeniable, but with you, he lets down his guard in the most intimate ways. He loves the feel of your hand in his, the warmth of your fingers weaving through his, and the way it calms the storm inside him. After long days of fighting and planning, he finds solace in the simple act of you resting your head on his shoulder, your breathing steadying him as he holds you close, his arm draped around you. He pulls you into his chest in moments of vulnerability, whispering softly, “I’ll protect you. Always,” with that quiet intensity you know so well. When you’re close, he tends to pull you into his space, his lips brushing your forehead or the top of your head, as if marking his territory in the most loving way, Gale is not one for grand gestures, but he shows his affection in the way he holds you during the darkest nights, his lips brushing against your skin, and in the way his rough fingers gently caress your face when he looks at you like you’re the only thing that matters. You’ve seen him at his angriest, but it’s in those quiet moments with you that his heart softens. “You’re the only thing that makes sense to me,” he’ll whisper as he presses a kiss to your temple. With you, Gale is not the rebellious hero; he’s just a man who loves you fiercely, and when he holds you, it’s as if nothing else matters in the world.
H- haymitch: Haymitch Abernathy is rough around the edges, but with you, he’s surprisingly tender. He often shows his affection through small, subtle gestures—like offering you a drink when you’re stressed or pulling you into a rare, quiet hug after a long day. He doesn’t say much, but when he does, it’s blunt and honest, like, “You’re not as annoying as I thought.” His kisses are rare but meaningful, lingering with a quiet intensity that shows how much you mean to him. When the world feels too heavy, he’ll find solace in your presence, letting you in just enough to show you his true self, the one that cares more than he lets on.
I- 😓😓😓😓😓😓😓
J- Johanna Mason: is sharp, direct, and never one to sugarcoat things, but with you, her affection shows in the little moments. She might say, “I’m only nice to you because you’re not completely annoying,” but her eyes tell a different story. When you’re close, she’ll mutter, “Don’t get used to this, alright?” as she pulls you in for a rare hug. Johanna loves teasing you, saying things like, “You’re lucky I like you,” or “Don’t make me regret this, sweetheart,” but her actions always speak louder than her words. When she kisses you, it’s fierce and unspoken, a promise that she’ll always have your back, even if she doesn’t always show it.
K- Katniss Everdeen: is strong, independent, and often reserved, but with you, she lets her guard down. She’ll pull you into her arms after a long day, murmuring, “Stay close,” her way of saying she needs you. Katniss loves quiet moments, like sitting by the fire or hunting together in the woods. If you’re having a bad day, she’ll quietly hand you her favorite food or something she knows will comfort you, saying, “I thought you might need this.” Her affection is subtle but genuine, like when she brushes your hair out of your face and says, “Don’t be so stubborn.” Her love is in the little things—protecting you, silently supporting you, and showing her care without needing many words.
L- 😥
M- Madge: shows affection with small, thoughtful gestures. She might say, “I thought you’d like this,” while handing you a flower or a book. When you’re feeling down, she quietly sits with you, offering comfort without needing many words. She’d softly say, “Be safe out there,” or simply enjoy peaceful moments together, showing her love in subtle, caring ways.
N- 😓
O-😓
P- Peeta Mellark: is kind, selfless, and always puts others first. He loves comforting you with simple words like, “You’re not alone,” and shows his affection through small acts of kindness—whether it’s baking you bread or gently holding your hand during tough moments. His love is steady and unconditional, always ready to reassure you with a soft smile or a quiet, “I’ll always be here.” Peeta’s the type to protect you in any way he can, and his heart is all yours.
Q- 😓
R-😓
S- 😓
T- Thresh: is a man of few words, but when he speaks, it’s always meaningful. He’s fiercely protective of those he cares about, especially Rue, and his actions always speak louder than words. He might tell you, “I won’t let anyone hurt you,” his tone calm but determined. Thresh doesn’t need to say much to show he cares—whether it’s silently watching over you or sharing a moment of quiet understanding. He values loyalty above all, and when he says, “You’re not alone,” you know he means it, no matter how little he says.
U- 😓😓😓
V- 😓😓😓
W- Wiress: is quiet, observant, and always looking for patterns. She might say, “I’ll figure it out,” while tinkering with something, focused on solving problems in her own unique way. When she cares, she shows it by offering practical help—whether it’s fixing something for you or just staying by your side. She’d often say, “Don’t worry, I’m here,” in her calm, reassuring tone. Wiress isn’t big on words, but her actions speak volumes, and she’s always there when you need her.

Can you please share a snippet from the WIP chapter 25 of holding bright?
sure! here’s just a little snippet ;)
“Why can’t you just let me go?! Why can’t you just let things happen? Why do you… Why do you have to fight everything?” she bursts.
Gale’s shoulders sink as he huffs out a sigh. His eyes follow his own fingers as he idly traces the outlines of his pants pockets. “I… I’ve never been very good at doing what’s expected of me,” he says quietly. His gaze shifts to meet hers, his chin still tucked down and his dark eyes electric against the glow of the sunlit blood splattered across his face. “And you know I can’t just let you go.”
“Stop lying,” Madge snaps reflexively. “No more lying.”
Anger flits across Gale’s face, those storm cloud eyes lighting up with rage, and Madge never thought it’d feel so welcome, so familiar. This, this she can understand.
[thank you so much for reaching out and asking, i’m so glad you’re looking forward to it!! i’m also gonna tag @vampirehizzies @thefloatingwriter @madlymadeleine bc ik they’ll be interested too :3]

Suzanne Collins is a white woman, so I know with this post that I’m preaching to the choir, but I will always believe that she was wrong for not making Katniss and the people of the Seam explicitly Indigenous. There’s so much to work with in that part of the country-some peoples from that region (Appalachia) include: the Cherokee, Choctaw, Monacans, Pamunkey, Oneida, Seneca, Haudenosaunee, and Shawnee- and that is a VERY brief overview. The Seam in the books is quite literally a reservation, with the same horrible conditions that exist on current day reservations. In the movies District 12 was filmed very close to the Eastern Cherokee reservation in North Carolina. There’s so many parallels and references and then Suzanne is like “lol nope no Natives here!” She was explicit with making District 11 Black, with the way they are brutalized by Peacekeepers, and the…. cotton picking (which we can get into another day bc wtf was that Suzanne 😭😭). Anyways, I think the story would have been more powerful if it explicitly showed an Indigenous girl being the one to piss off the fascist president.

Evolving from a "Why are you booing me? I'm right!" to more of a "Your boos mean nothing. I've seen what makes you cheer" attitude with respect to the Gale hate.
Peeta stans can be more rabid than Jessup with the amount of vitriol my boy gets. You people have made me feel like I need a hazmat suit just to search the Gale tag and then come into my inbox complaining about the most mild, valid critiques I have about Peeta I-Don't-Care-If-You-See-Me Mellark.
Gale's only crime was being the Other Man to that contrived little ship and not being your Perfect Victim Cherubic Doughboy. He doesn't have Peeta's way with words, but that just speaks to how he has nary a manipulative bone in his body. Gale is straightforward and honest, even when you don't like what he has to say. He's the Rebel in this story of Rebellion despite also being just a traumatized kid himself. Literally just doing his best and being honest about it the entire time.

I think it may be due to how he remembers how many he couldn’t save. Poor kid
Gale, the humble king. "The credit for the survivors' escape has landed squarely on Gale's shoulders, though he's loath to accept it."
These Seam kids and their resistance to tooting their own horns. It's ok, I'll do it for them!
Gale brought as many people as he could to the Meadow and through the fence. He's a leader. And once in the wild, Prim and Mrs. Everdeen stun me by caring for so many wounded with so few resources, and he starts handling the food.
>800 hungry and injured people. 2 bows. 2 sets of arrows. A single hunting knife. A single fishing net. He fucking did it for 3 days. The Everdeens tended to the injured from a bombing for 3 days.
I can't even imagine how hard that was. But he takes care of his people. Even the few survivors from the Town, who are less accustomed to hunger, he takes care of them. No matter how used to starving you are, 3 days is a long ass time to go without a reliable food source. Hunting with Katniss with these resources, he's only been catching enough to feed their two families or sell in the Hob. You gotta turn the work way way up to make that stretch to 10% of your District.
He may be loath to accept the credit, but he never gets enough, imo. Neither do Prim and Mrs. Everdeen for all that medical care. You just know they never slept.

He tilts his forehead down to rest against mine and pulls me closer. His skin, his whole being radiates heat from being so near the fire, and I close my eyes, soaking in his warmth. I breathe in the smell of snow-dampened leather and smoke and apples, the smell of all those wintry days we shared before the Games. I don’t try to move away. Why should I anyway? His voice drops to a whisper. “I love you.” That’s why.
#thgedit#thg#katniss everdeen#gale hawthorne#the whole quote unquote gale slander thing made me want to make something quick for gale/galeniss too#mine#tbh i don't remember much about their relationship in the books#but i still like it better than [redacted]#the hunger games#peeta mellark

In loooooove with Johanna, arguably the bravest of them all, for her open rant against the Capitol and how they can't actually hurt Prim, because then they'd have uprisings, and "Don't want that, do they? Whole country in rebellion? Wouldn't want anything like that!"
Katniss is dumbfounded, and it's followed up by Johanna's bit about having no one left that she loves. And I think that's what makes Johanna so free. All the other main characters are restricted in what they can do because of what the Capitol might do to their loved ones in retaliation. But Johanna is free. They can't hurt her with the jabberjays or anything else because she is only responsible for herself. Maybe that's why she's my favorite of the Victors in terms of her actions in service of the rebellion.
And I like her dark humor. She jokes the second night that whoever is alive by breakfast can share the bread, and when Katniss laughs, it's like that's what earns her approval. The budding friendship and recognition of Katniss's harder edge.

In one of your thg reread post, you said about people being 'weird' about your own opinion of the book.
Do they send ask about it? If yes, could you share what they mean about it?
Yeah, I got a rude ask, but I don't publish those. There was a reply on one post that only said I didn't read the books. Then there was a longer comment in a reblog of another post accusing me of not understanding the value of the love story.
It's just annoying that differing interpretations, which come from differing perspectives, are not really tolerated in fandom. But I don't let it get to me.

I love Gale's shift in the shack by the lake after Katniss spills the beans about the uprising in District 8. When Snow was just threatening him and his and Katniss's families, he was ready to run. But once he hears that the time for revolution is upon them, he can't. People in the mines are talking, and the mines will have solidarity with the textile mills. And the fishing boats. And the tech factories. And the farms. And all the rest. If others in Panem are rising, then so is he.
Because if it isn't just him that's in danger, or people he alone can support, then he must stay. The lives of District people mean less than nothing to the Capitol, and "that's why we have to join the fight!...What about the other families, Katniss? The ones who can't run away?"

Gale is so politically conscious. He makes the small jab at Madge about her low risk of being reaped, and that annoys Katniss, but she knows he's right. A couple pages later, she explains how Gale has ranted about how tesserae are used to divide the people of the Districts. While he may resent Madge and other Town kids for their privilege in not having to take tesserae, he also recognizes that "it's to the Capitol's advantage to have us divided among ourselves."

Katniss Everdeen
Currently rereading the first book (this time with an audiobook), and I’m loving it so far! I hadn’t read the series since middle school, and I forgot just how detailed and immersive the books can be. I especially love hearing Katniss’s thoughts and humor— many of which gets lost in the movies bc she isn’t the narrator.
I’m excited to listen to the rest of story! Shout out to the person narrating the one I’m reading.
