Listening to the audiobook of The House of My Mother and Jodi Hildebrandt and Ruby Franke deserve NOTHING. I already knew the basics of the story but hearing Shari relay her experiences in her own voice is absolutely infuriating. It's a phenomenal book and I highly recommend getting it to support her, but it's heartbreaking knowing that those kids' childhoods were stolen away from them in service to their mother's selfishness and abuse. If you believe parenthood is a sacred duty then that sacred duty should be to selflessly care for and support your children as beautiful and valuable individuals who deserve to have that value upheld and validated. Children do not exist as puppets for personal gain, as extensions of oneself, or as blank slates parents can project all their insecurities and unresolved issues onto and then use as emotional punching bags. Anyone engaging in this type of behavior towards their children, even if they never physically harm them, is wrong. Anyone who enables this type of behavior is wrong. Anyone who stands by and does nothing when they have the power to do something is wrong. I am beyond disgusted. Also yes I believe Kevin needs to be held accountable because despite him playing the role of the "good" or "nice" parent, he was complicit by simply allowing Ruby to psychologically torture her kids even before Jodi entered the picture. The parent who stands by and doesn't risk their own safety, emotional or physical, to defend their children is also at fault for failing their children. I'm not giving Kevin any wiggle room here to be the innocent one simply because the wasn't the one berating, controlling, or hitting the kids. He was present for a lot of what happened just to Shari and Chad before Jodi took full control. He was an enabler. The only sympathy I have for him was being trapped in a marriage with that monster and likely becoming codependent until he was iced out. The kids deserved better than than both of them.

If nothing else, this book needs to be a wake-up call for people who don't think deeply enough about the lasting impact social media can have on their children's upbringing. Even posting photos or videos too frequently for innocent reasons runs the risk of destroying their sense of security and privacy, and therefore destroying their mental health. Kids deserve their privacy. They deserve not to have that violated without their consent. They deserve to be able to go to school and not have to be anxious because they're worried about what their peers may have seen of them posted online. I don't think this just affects kids who are the children of self-professed social media stars. It affects ALL of them. There is an inherent danger to giving kids too much online visibility, and this isn't just because predators are lurking everywhere. Just the lack of privacy itself is damaging, and we as a society need to collectively do better when it comes to protecting kids' safety and respecting their right to privacy. The entire world does not need to have a front row seat to view their lives. They are human too, with valid human boundaries, and they deserve to have that humanity taken into account when it comes to online activity they're not in control of.

did you know that you can just go online and be nice to people? you can give people compliments and helpful advice when they ask? you can encourage people when they need a little cheering up? you can even share cute pictures! more people should use the internet like that.
