okayyy i read alien covenant origins and im gonna ramble cause i have a lot of shit to say. also spoilers obviously. 🪐

going into this, without reading a synopsis (100% my fault), i knew this wouldn’t be an alien horror story & that they would have to build shit up for the actual story of covenant.

that being said,, this was just bad. the book spent a ridiculous amount of time talking about the merging of weyland and yutani—like a ridiculous amount of time talking about just how the companies merged and what it means and all that bullshit. and it didn’t even feel like a critique on the capitalist aspects of alien either. sure, they had the usually gibes about the company and how they treated the employees, but this literally spent like 175 ish pages just talking about how the companies functioned and board meetings. it was just really boring to read after the halfway mark because it felt so repetitive.

also smaller note, but there were so many phrases that were repeated every few pages. i can’t name any exactly but reading this literally felt like reading the same few pages on repeat a few times through.

uhhh what else. oh yeah i think the whole subplot with the prophet (subplot in the parts where he was talked about in detail) were SUPER cool, but it felt like this was written the same way prometheus was in the sense that cool shit was brought up, talked about for a little bit, and then dropped and just never brought up again.

lastly, the whole talk about the david models & walter should’ve been talked about more. maybeee that’s biased cause i love synthetics, but jesus christ david is like a crucial part to both prometheus & covenant and he was only mentioned by name a few times. they spent way too long talking about walter being a piece of cargo than talking about him as a character.

tldr; writing felt poor, and it just wasn’t written well, nor was it entertaining. yeah i speed read this (one day to read let’s goooo) but that was only so i could get it over with honestly. wouldn’t really recommend unless you wanna read the whole series (which im trying to do). honestly you had 340-something pages to make up a prequel by yourself, not related to any film, and this is what you made? just a huge step down from the actual alien novelization which was SO good.
