it was late at night, well past midnight, when Chris stirred awake, his hand instinctively reaching out across the bed only to meet cool, empty sheets. his brows furrowed in confusion as he blinked through the sleepiness, head lifting slightly to glance around the dark room. the faint hum of the refrigerator and a soft light spilling from the kitchen hinted at where you were.

quietly padding out of the bedroom, Chris found you sitting at the kitchen counter, bathed in the soft glow of the fridge light. a spoon was in your hand, a tub of ice cream in front of you, your hoodie—one of his—swallowing you whole as you stared at the countertop, lost in thought.

“hey…” Chris’s voice was soft as he approached, concern lacing his words. “what’s going on? you okay? i woke up, and you weren’t there.”

you looked up, startled, but quickly gave him a small smile to ease his worry. “i’m fine, i promise. i just… couldn’t sleep. my mind wouldn’t turn off, and ice cream sounded like a good distraction.

chris sighed lightly, leaning against the counter as he studied you. “you should’ve woken me up, princess. you don’t have to do the late-night brooding alone.” he grabbed a spoon from the drawer and slid onto the stool next to you, swiping a bite of your ice cream without hesitation.

you gasped dramatically, smacking his arm. “excuse me? that’s mine.”

chris flashed a playful grin. “consider this your fee for worrying me.”

before long, the two of you had moved to the couch, ice cream forgotten in favor of a silly card game that made you both laugh until you were snorting. chris tried cheating at least twice, swearing up and down it was “strategy,” and you had to shush him when his laughter got too loud.

as the minutes ticked by, you both settled into something quieter—an old sitcom running on TV, its soft dialogue filling the living room. chris felt your head gradually lean against his shoulder, and when he looked down, his heart melted. you were fast asleep, lips slightly parted, your hand still holding onto the last card you’d never get to play.

with a gentle smile, chris brushed a strand of hair from your face and turned the volume down even lower. “sweet dreams, princess,” he whispered, pressing a soft kiss to your temple.

deciding not to wake you, he stayed still, letting you rest against him. And even though the clock crept closer to dawn, chris didn’t mind. Because in that moment, being here—keeping you company—was exactly where he wanted to be.
