“Well aren’t you mature…” To be able to tolerate a child was no easy task. Tryst him, he knows this fully well. Though, with the added bonus that the girl she was referring to had a higher level than him, it was a little frightening.

With the young lad going on about how this city works, it was rather informative as well as working as a means to pass the time while showing him around the city.

Though with how Touma shares how he was a magnet for unfortunate events, Rinnosuke couldn’t help but find it humorous. “Surely you aren’t that unlucky now? If you were, I don’t think you’d be how you are now… That is, unless you’ve gotten far to used or fed up to what you have to deal with to not care anymore.”

It wasn’t laughable that it was unbelievable, no. It was funny considering the man he was walking with was trouble. Though he did get here through proper means and he was neither targeting someone or the like, so the kid should be fine, right?

He waved his hand in front of Rinnosuke half-heartedly. "You can shrug off or dismiss my misfortune if you want. It doesn't make a difference to me whether you think I'm lazy or genuinely hated by fate. And I'm sure there are people that have it far worse than me." He dropped the hand back by his side, but continued talking.

"I'm the sort of person who always gets caught under sprinklers, has his homework genuinely eaten by dogs, gets caught by train delays, and I've ended up in the hospital so much lately that the doctor and nurses know me by name." He let out an exaggerated sigh. "That's the kind of life that Kamijou Touma leads."

As he finished rambling, he turned his head to face Rinnosuke. "What about you, then? Are you saying you lead a totally normal and uneventful life? Don't make me laugh. You're visiting Academy City, so there's no way you're just some average Joe. I bet you run into trouble all the time, as well, huh?"

Fluff to the unlucky boy Touma

Fluff :: What hits their soft spot? Does anything turn them into emotional goo?

He’s not really one for puppies, kittens or babies. Probably the easiest answer to that is “genuinely nice and kind people expressing genuine niceties and kindness towards him”. You could probably make this guy cry by paying for his grocery shopping. He would be happy for days if you did him a favour without calling him an idiot or biting him. Does that count?

Kamijou has a penchant for complaining, whether it be about a specific situation or his misfortune in general. When it comes down to it, he’s not really a pessimist, but there’s a lot of shit going on in his life at the moment and complaining is cathartic for him. Expect him to ramble about whatever is mildly inconveniencing him at the time. When he’s not complaining, he’s happy to argue extensively about meaningless and mundane things. 

It’s difficult to get Accelerator to talk about anything at all. Generally, if he’s talking a lot, it’s because he’s giving a morally charged spiel before beating someone up. Putting those kinds of thoughts into words helps him come to terms with his own philosophies, and also makes him feel powerful and cool as he punches assholes while yelling at them. He could probably also talk for a good few minutes about coffee brands, but chooses not to because that is meaningless and nobody would want to listen.

“Kanzaki? She’s kind of scary, but she seems like a good person. She’s always looking out for the Amakusa as their priestess, and she’s saved me a few times too, but…”

Othinus had an odd and somewhat eerie silence while Kamijou spoke. He could no longer read her expression at this moment. She simply set there on the bed pillow in silence until she finally spoke with a cold tone.

“It’s fine. Gods need no food to survive.” she said as if she was taking it rather well.

But then she stood up, turned her head so her neck would crack in a tiny sound that to normal sized humans could resemble the sound of a snapping toothpick, walked off the bed and towards the kitchen. A minute later, she returned with a fork in her hands that she held like a spear.

“…. but I have my pride as a magic god to protect! Come, you stupid cat! I’ll rip your stomach open and get that french fry, you whiserky thief!”

Sphinx didn’t seem to care too much as he just rested in a tractor position near the balcony window and watched the palm sized goddess approach him with a warface.

Kamijou decided against interrupting her calm and serene silence. This was good. She would be able to recover from this blow to her ego just fine. As her understander, he knew that she would be able to shrug this off in time.

As the small god left the room, he felt a shiver go down his spine.

Just what did that mean... ?

This sense of foreboding...

Before he had time to process what he was seeing, Othinus had already began to pursue the cat with a spear-like fork in both hands. "Wa... wait, Othinus?! There was no legend about the almighty God of War slaying a house cat, was there?! Hold back!! Index will really be angry if you hurt her cat!!"

“Really..? What an abusive relationship you have…” The man couldn’t help but remark. Just thinking about it, he couldn’t help but feel sorry for the young lad. “You must have it pretty rough, huh…. and for the higher ups here to turn a blind eye… I’d say it’s laziness, but I doubt that’s the case.”

How else were they going to be able to see someone’s capabilities if they didn’t let the students use their power? From the boy’s words, it made him think authority here wouldn’t move until they get completely out of hand.

“So… what exactly are the perks for students here? Other than getting paid for your participation, I mean.” Rinnosuke inquired as he’d follow behind the other.

"Well, in the end she's just a kid who's still in middle school, but the power of a Level 5 really is kind of scary. Ahh, well... compared to the others, Misaka's really not that bad. I saw that 7th ranked punch down electricity straight out of the sky, once... that one was pretty weird."

He gave a shrug, tilting his head just slightly. "I don't know. I can't really claim to understand the politics of this city, or anything. I'm just a normal high school student, and a Level 0 at that. There's no reason for people like that to take any particular interest in me."

Kamijou's reply to Rinnosuke's next question came pretty quick. "Perks? Well, I think the main reason that people want to come to a city like this is so they can gain super powers, right? Even if only around 40% of people ever develop a power that's of any use at all. That is, nearly 60% of the city is made up of Level 0s with little to no power." Waving his hand dismissively, he continued. "Well, it's not like I really care if I have some super power or not, but that's the reason why most people come, I think. It's that promise of greatness. There's no way of knowing if you might be some incredible Level 5 until you come and see for yourself."

"Besides that... well, it's generally a pretty safe city. The crime rate is quite low here, and there are all sorts of special protections in place, since it's a city full of incredible technological advancements. That does cause trouble as well, since it's a hassle to get out of the city to visit your parents, and it's hard to take guests in without the proper paperwork. But... I guess every coin has two sides. Oh, but I run into trouble wherever I go, so you shouldn't use the amount of trouble I run into as a benchmark for how safe a place is. I can assure you that most people have a much more fortunate experience of life than I do."

She hated it as much as she loved it but her expression didn’t change for solid number of seconds as her gaze fell onto the french fry in front of her. Othinus finally lifted her small head so Kamijou could see past the hat that was covering her well. With tinny tears in her eyes, she spoke with her normal voice again.

“…. I don’t know where you got it but it’s mine now, I’m not sharing…” she sniffled again and took the oversized french fry.

Sadly, before Othinus could nib on it, the cat named Sphinx swiftly hopped and took the fresh potato with his maws, out of magic god’s small arms and dashed off.

“…….”

Even Kamijou could only give a grim smile through dead eyes as the cat carried away the french fry.

"Othinus. We've been through a lot together, but it seems like we have more in common than I'd first thought."

While he would have expected this kind of misfortune for himself, who would have thought that Othinus would grow to experience such tragedies in her day-to-day life as well.

"Oh. And that was my last fry."

The boy was right but she was not ready to admit it. Getting use to basic feelings like hunger or cold was still a sign of a weakness to magic god, even if she lost some properties of one.

“…. am not…” she sniffled lightly.

Oh-so-gently, ever-so-carefully, Kamijou procured a french fry from goodness-knows-where and began to press it against the tiny Othinus's downtrodden face.

"Even if you say that, I'm still the one who understands you. I can at least read that much on your face."

Lamentably, humanity is being progressively corrupted by hubris & avaritia. However, he lives in an unpretentious & gracious manner. Someone who doesn’t give importance to material commodities & can subsist with little. Something inspiring in the immortal’s opinion, who lives encircled by glamour, money & materiality. Despite her inheritance, the mademoiselle had learned to esteem things beyond material possessions. ❝You have an enormous simplicity within your heart. Luckily, I never felt any deficiencies due to the patrimony left by my ancestry.❞ One day Ai would like to live without the extravagances to which she was accustomed. She doesn’t know the palate of a normal life.

Kamijou's expression shifted into something sheepish and perplexed, and he sweated a little. ❝ I'll take that as a compliment,❞ he decided, since her words didn't seem to have any malice in them. It certainly wasn't the first time he'd been called simple, but it was probably the first time he'd not presumed it to be an insult to his intelligence.

It took a few moments for her offer to really sink in, but when it did, he physically flinched with surprise. ❝Wa... wait, is that really okay? You don't owe me anything, I was only paying you back this once. If you did something like that... well, then I'd really owe you, bigtime.❞ He didn't like to be in debt, but even for a simple guy like Kamijou - even for someone who had said that he had no desire to be rich... he was still human. The prospect of being able to experience wealthiness even for a short time was intriguing. He thought it would probably be rude of him to use someone else's money to pay off his unthinkably large hospital bills, but if he did have some spare cash, he could use it to take Index out for a meal that would properly satisfy her, and play as many arcade games as he wanted. ❝Of course I'm interested, but... that seems excessive. Like I said, you don't owe me anything.❞

“Oh, it is… mainly because there are so many things that need to be factored when it comes to setting up a business. Even if you have a brilliant idea and set up, it can all be turned around with just luck alone just as quickly as snapping your fingers.”

The man just shrugged his arms at the question while following the other close behind as he spoke. “Who knows how long I’ll be staying really.” They’d shrugged their arms as they continued. “I can only really say that it all depends on the results of my findings and nothing more.”

“As for my name, it’s Rinnosuke Morichika. A pleasure to meet you, Kamijou.” With their introduction done, the man would turn their gaze around their surroundings once again, taking everything their eyes could pick up and making a mental note of what struck his attention the most.

“Talk about being strict, though. There’s always a camera to monitor your movements in every block that only an idiot would cause a scene here.”

"Pleasure to meet you, too, Morichika. Then, I'll try and find you some place that's cheap enough for you to stay indefinitely. But do try to stay careful. Even if this is a city full of students, some of them have incredible supernatural powers, and the ones that don't can still beat up an adult if they gain enough advantage in numbers." Of course, he was talking about the thugs with no powers who had dropped out of school and called themselves Skill-Out as they lived on the streets of Academy City with no support network but each other.

As for where they were standing now, it seemed to be the 7th district of Academy City, which was comprised of 23 districts in total. As the city was powered entirely by renewable means, there were a good number of wind turbines visible in the vicinity, turning slowly as the wind blew. Naturally, as the majority of the city were students who couldn't yet drive, there were very few cars on the road - it seemed to be a city where walking and public transport were king. And in the 7th district, there were a good number of high schools and middle schools. Aside from the slightly odd contents of the vending machines and the visible weather blimps in the sky, the city didn't seem too terribly different from any other city, on the surface. It was touted as being 20 or 30 years ahead of the rest of the world for technology, but it wasn't the kind of place that an outsider would feel entirely lost in. At least, that would be the case for an outsider who was familiar with the workings of large cities like Tokyo.

"Hmmm, you get used to it. Or work around it. I know that Misaka-san always used to attack me with no regard for whether she was being watched or not. I don't think the higher-ups much cared." His smile was somewhat nervous. If he thought about it, he'd seen far more than just Misaka's antics that could be called a "scene".  

As the pair were speaking, Kamijou began to walk, nodding as if to signal for Rinnosuke to follow.

"I locked myself in the bathroom. I can hear Aiwass and Othinus talking about memes in the main room. That kind of conversation is so dangerous it might become a battleground at any moment, so I can’t come out until I’m sure they’re done. Please, free me from this prison.”

"Oh? Could that mask not even stand up to one direct attack so you needed to recruit others in some vain hope to overcome these xhrtpMEMESqwotu?"

“Memes might be the bane of my boyfriend’s existence! But I will resist them! And I will save him! I will protect him from whatever you might throw at him, villain!!”
