Amity Hasn’t Lost Her Personality

Amity didn’t lose her personality after Season 1; she found it. I am genuinely baffled by people who seem to think she has become flat or just “the love interest.“  

When people say they “miss Season 1 Amity,” it’s strange to me, because the Amity we see in Season 1A isn’t the real Amity. It’s a mask personality she constructed after being forced to by Odalia.

All that ambition and aggressive competitiveness was something that ODALIA wanted. Amity dropped it so fast, almost immediately after Episode 7, because it’s not her  true nature. Like it or not, Amity’s real personality includes her being a nerdy, awkward teenage girl. Thanks to Them shows her at some of her freest moments, and what is she doing while being so happy? She’s trying out fashion, falling flat on her face, watching silly movies with her friends, doing “cringey” couples costumes with her girlfriend…all very typical interests of a girl in her demographic.

Yes, she’s an abomination prodigy and she is epic in fight scenes, but other than that, she’s really not all that “special.” And that’s good!

Amity WANTS to be a basic teen. All of her happiest moments are in the silly, quiet things. Volunteering at the library, reading to kids, doing cheesy tunnel of love rides…these things are what make her most joyful.

And yeah, she’s obsessed with Luz. EVERY teenager is obsessed with their significant other when they first get in a relationship. It’s not a writing issue; it’s a very realistic depiction of what someone would do in her situation, especially given Luz is someone who gives her unconditional love and actively enjoys her dorkiness, something she hasn’t had since being friends with Willow.

We expect this larger than life character, someone who is always cool and competent, an edgy badass. Sometimes she is that way, but she’s not all the time. Why do we want her to always be like that, or even worse, to be the mean girl persona her entire arc was about escaping from?

 I for one absolutely adore Amity in Thanks to Them, I would go as far as to say Thanks to Them shows Amity at her best. One of the things TOH does so well is capture the awkwardness of teenagers; even when they are facing world-ending issues they’re still  dorks and they make weird faces in photos. 

There is nothing wrong with being an average dumbass teen. It’s really all Amity’s ever wanted, a life free from expectations and ambition. She doesn’t want to be a prodigy, she wants to be a kid. And in Thanks to Them, she gets to be a kid. So yeah, she doesn’t “do” much, but she’s happy.

We as a society are so afraid of being cringe, and it’s stifling us. People worship the cynical, edgy antihero characters.

The world is depressing, and so people turn to cynicism as a survival mechanism, but that’s not what makes life worth living. Deep down, EVERYONE is cringey and dumb, and if we didn’t spend so much energy trying to be exceptional and cool, we’d be a lot happier. With Amity, here is a person who has finally found the freedom to be as cringe as they want. 

She has no worries about overwhelming expectations from her parents, or hierarchy battles with her peers to compete for social status. She’s 15 years old, and she’s free to embrace her happy, clumsy nerd side. In Thanks to Them, for the very first time, Amity is truly free. And if that means she’s “boring” now, well so be it.

I just wish Max got to keep her powers and be a little weirdo with them. Like people in her life think there’s something a little off with her because she doesn’t have accidents and she’s kinda anxious but will suddenly say exactly the right thing. She seems to know things that they swear they hadn’t told her and couple people swear they’ve seen her teleport

i know he probably couldn't have stopped her & she photo-jumps after anyway but it is still Wild to me that Madsen frees Max from this insane torture basement, kills a man right in front of her and then just. lets her go off on her own. like David buddy i know you're in A State too but Max is out there half high on a combo of grief, adrenaline, and whatever the hell drugs are still left in her system and she's going gta mode carjacking Jefferson's kia and i just think you should maybe. do something. about that

[Max is walking across the Blackwell Campus when she suddenly finds herself surrounded by Victoria, Taylor and Courtney. Victoria is scowling with a mixture of annoyance and envy.]

Victoria: You. With me. Now.

[Taylor and Courtney grab Max's arms before she can protest. The next moment, Max finds herself getting frog-marched into Victoria's dorm room, where she inexplicably finds Chloe, Rachel, Kate, Alyssa, Brooke, Dana, Juliet and Steph all gathered. All seven girls sport various looks of amusement and confusion at their current situation.]

Max: [Pulling herself free.] Okay, what is this all about?

Victoria: You mean it's not obvious? I want you to tell me exactly how the fuck you managed to pull every girl of note in Arcadia Bay after only three months at Blackwell!

[Max has no answer. In fact, she doesn't seem too sure herself.]

Chloe: [Grins.] Well, me and her are childhood friends who've been crushing on each other pretty much since we first met.

Rachel: [Shrugs.] As it turns out, Chloe's only available as part of a package deal with Max. [Winks at Max before licking her lips.] Not that I'm complaining, of course.

Kate: [Nervous.] She's been nothing but nice to me in all the time I've known her.

Alyssa: I'd have at least six serious concussions if it wasn't for her constantly looking out for me.

Brooke: Eh, Warren turned out to be an ass, and I wanted to be able to say that I Korrasamied.

Dana: She's sweet, nice, cute, and surprisingly good in bed.

Juliet: Same. [Narrows her eyes at Victoria.] Oh and by the way, you're welcome to Zak if you're really that desperate.

Steph: [Shrugs.] After Dana joined, we decided we needed someone who could bring some semblance of order to…whatever this is. I'm a lesbian who manages theatre shit and tabletop games; they figured I was a natural fit for the position.

[A silent pause occupies the room.]

Victoria: ...This isn't fair.

[Victoria turns around and storms out. Taylor and Courtney look at each other, before looking at Max.]

Taylor: So...can we join?

Max: We’re being impulsive. Are you supposed to kick or knock when you’re impulsive?

Chloe: Knock with your foot.

Max: Brilliant.

I just feel like we don’t talk about how hot Max is enough. I see tons of posts about how hot Chloe is (which is fair because she is) but not enough for Max! Sure she’s has more of a ‘girl next door’ kinda vibe but you can’t tell me she wasn’t super hot when she told Jefferson to go fuck himself.

I think Chloe is actually really smart but she thinks absolutely nothing through. She’s living by the seat of her pants and ends up shooting herself because she wanted to impress her crush. Give her like two days and she’ll rebuild a truck but she’s out there waving around a gun like she’s Supergirl
