on the way to my allergy appointment i saw the most adorable exchange of immigrant babies doing that thing kids do, where they see another baby and are like "BABY??? OTHER BABY???". first it started with a little desi baby who was giggling and smiling at the little chinese girl sitting next to me, then they got off the train and a latina mom and her kid sat across from the little chinese girl, and eventually the little chinese girl got super brave and went up to the mom and was trying to talk to the other little girl but could only really speak in what i'm pretty sure was 80% mandarin but also 20% little kid talk. it was so cute and probably the most 7 train shit i've seen in my life and made me (once again) appreciate living in queens. but then on my way home on the bus, while we were stopped at a corner, i saw a man drag a woman and start beating her on the street openly while people walked by and mildly rubbernecked but mostly didn't want to be hassled and walked past. and that felt pretty bad! because no one gives a fuck about women! especially when most of the neighborhood is immigrants and a lot of people are probably undocumented and don't wanna get involved in shit that can get them deported. but then when i got off the bus the sky was blue and people were walking on the open streets and the wind blew leaves gently into the air and it was like ok well i guess life is beautiful in this exact moment
