What Are the 5 Basic Steps of Supply Chain Management?
Supply Chain Management process plays a huge importance in running key operations for nearly every industry. Without a strong supply chain, processes could halt at the floor level and ultimately bring down the results. For so many decades, supply chains have gone through a journey of their own from being so simple to recently improved algorithm based ones. With ever-evolving supply chain ideas, supply chain management process has grown a dedicated function. Supply chain managers are given the responsibility to ensure that supply chain, be it external or internal, is efficient and cost-effective both. But another question that comes up is how they do it? The mechanism to be followed for effective supply chain management process requires five basic stages described here.
PLAN – Planning is an important part of the supply chain management process, to find out the best possible blueprint of how to fulfil the end requirement. SCM managers should identify a list of key elements like plant location & size, warehouse designing, delivery models, IT solutions' selection, etc. Not only this, the supply chain management process would be inadequate if key matrices like transportation cost modelling, warehouse efficiency models, etc. are not developed.
SOURCE – At this stage of supply chain management, the emphasis is on to ascertain the most reliable of suppliers for raw materials so that the production process would never jeopardize. But challenging situations do arise during operations, supply chain managers must assure key pain points of supply cycle are constantly being tracked to keep the engine running.
EXECUTE – This is the stage where well-designed processes are implemented so that a perceivable shape is given to existing plans in the form of manufactured products which are available for testing, packaging, and delivery. Not only this, results at this stage are quantified so that maximum possible efficiency is achieved.
DELIVER – Supply chain when reaches this step, the managers have a task at hand to pass the product/service in the right quantity, at the right place and right time by applying suitable carriers. Supply chain managers should be fully equipped with advanced IT tools to keep a record on warehousing networks, inventory models as well as invoicing and payment receipts.
RETURN – Returns' handling is the last step of the supply chain management process. It not only includes reviewing returned products for quality purposes but also managing their inventory. At the ground level, supply chain supervisors should deploy their resources assisting them with technology for quicker pickups, faster replacements, etc. Returns management should be a value enhancement measure in the eyes of the supply chain managers and they must ensure every desirable measure is taken for maximum possible efficiency.

The Challenges of Textile Sourcing
Although we can claim that the major global trend in textile sourcing during the last few years has been the quest for a replacement for China, we know today that this unique and perfect replacement does not exist.
Certainly, there are a series of nations, including India and Bangladesh and regions like South East Asia, that are able as a whole, to a bigger or lesser extent, to correct the situation, but none of them will independently solve the problem that has been created by the rising costs in the Asian Giant.
If we combine the fact that the textile industry is one of the most vertical and intensive sectors in the use of labour. We can assume that we won't create our designs again for a lower price than we have previously paid under current provisions. Indeed, we have reached the limits of Low cost.
The future cost reduction will come from robotic technology applied to production and logistics.
Given this situation, we presently face a dual hurdle. On the one hand, we must measure and control costs efficiently. On the other, we must match the demands of a frequently demanding consumer in terms of transparency of production processes, rational and precise use of resources, environmental protection and the strict compliance with corporate social responsibility strategies.
Location of Production
As textile sourcing is now more global than ever, a topic that gains great relevance is the sourcing strategy about the optimum location of each model for its production.
A professional or a team of professionals with updated knowledge in terms of production costs in each country, the specialization of each productive region, the cost of materials and production times in each area are essential for the company to create value in its supply chain and to stand out from the competition. This is where competitive advantages are born.
Omnichannel Model and Sourcing
Lastly, another very interesting challenge that we face as textile sourcing professionals is to provide support to the omnichannel model.
We must understand that the first and last links of the chain are getting closer production and sales and we must offer from origin solutions to make the commercial multichannel effective and flourishing.
That means to control the information we receive from consumers and after analyzing this enormous amount of data, we must generate answers to meet their purchasing needs through different sales channels. More specifically, it means, for instance, to focus on advancing the speed of our supply chain and to add suppliers who can manage the largest possible amount of processes so that the product shipped from origin arrives at destination ready in all its variations. Our design will reach the hand of the end-consumer entirely regardless of the purchase channel that was chosen. This is to supply for the omnichannel model.
Bottom line
This is partly the current reality of textile sourcing. While these may seem like too many challenges, we strongly believe that with training, good attitude and hard work we will come out stronger and successful from each of them.
