Top Ten Songs that Made Great Scenes Iconic (Part 1)

I remember the very first time I realized I had fallen in love with music and television. It was during the time I watched the very first episode of One Tree Hill. I liked music before I watched the OTH pilot, but it was the first time I had truly fallen in love with music. I liked music with catchy lyrics and a good beat, but I fell in love with music that made you feel warmth throughout your whole body. I fell in love with music that told a story, and even if you couldn’t relate to that story, it had the ability to make you cry. I fell in love with music that you could hear anywhere at any time, and it would automatically take you back to the very moment you heard it for the first time. This is the type of music that has made some of the greatest scenes from television shows iconic. As you watch these iconic scenes and listen to the amazing lyrics, I hope you are touched just as much as I was. I hope from now on you find music you can more than “like.” I hope you find music that you can fall in love with time and time again.

Never Let Me Go by Florence + The Machine

Never Let Me Go played in the background during the most iconic episodes of two of the most popular shows in television history.

The first time I heard this song was during the 11thepisode of season 9 of One Tree Hill.In this particular episode, Nathan and Haley are finally reunited after Nathan was abducted. Haley had been through weeks of torture not knowing of her husband’s whereabouts or if he was still alive. In the previous episode, Haley receives a phone call, and she rushes to the hospital. As she rushes to Nathan, he’s standing in the hospital hallway. They embrace, and in that moment, you fall in love with Nathan and Haley even more if it’s possible.

The second time I heard Never Let Me Go was during the 19thepisode of season 3 of The Vampire Diaries. Throughout the series, Elena Gilbert faced the most difficult challenge of having to choose between two great men in her life. This episode titled, “Heart of Darkness,” gave #TeamDamon fans the hope we so desperately needed in our lives. This scene is the very first time Elena allowed herself to let go of the notion that she could never have genuine feelings for Damon Salvatore. While Never Let Me Go was playing in the background, Elena and Damon had one of the most iconic make-out scenes in television history.

Everything Has Grown by Colouring

In season 7 of The Vampire Diaries, Damon Salvatore made the choice to desiccate until he could finally be reunited with his true love, Elena Gilbert. He couldn’t allow his family and friends to continue to risk their lives for him, so he took matters into his own hands. He wrote letters to his brother Stefan, his friend Alaric and his best friend Bonnie telling them of his plans. While Stefan and Alaric both read their letters, Bonnie refused to read the letter Damon wrote to her. She could not understand why her best friend was choosing to desiccate and risk never seeing her again. In episode 10 of season 8 of The Vampire Diaries, Bonnie and Damon have a heart-to-heart, and she finally gets to know what Damon wrote in the letter – from Damon himself. This scene is my favorites from the whole series because we finally get to hear what was written in the letter, and we get to see how the friendship between Damon and Bonnie has evolved over the years. There is no better song that could’ve fit this scene. Everything Has Grownfits this scene perfectly.

Apologies by Grace Potter & The Nocturnals

Apologies is played during one of the most epic scenes of One Tree Hill. Episode 12 of season 5 of One Tree Hillis one of the most gut-wrenching, beautifully written episodes I’ve ever watched. The episode beings on a happy note and quickly takes a turn. Jamie Scott, Nathan and Haley’s son, is kidnapped by his former nanny. However, the assumption is made that Nathan’s father was Jamie’s kidnapper. Apologiesis playing in the background when Jamie runs to his devastated mother and father with a hopeful Dan closely behind. When Jamie admits to his family that his Grandpa Dan is the one who saved him, everyone stares at Dan in disbelief. The acting in this scene is absolutely phenomenal.

For A Moment by The Careful Ones

For A Moment by The Careful Ones has become my all-time favorite lullaby. I first heard it on Rookie Blue, and I could not get it out of my head for two whole weeks. It fits the scene so perfectly. Sam Swarek and Andy McNally had one of the most epic love stories ever written. Over the series’ run, they had many ups and downs, but in the fourth episode of season 5, you finally see McSwarek at their best. While Andy is questioning her skills as a superior and a cop, Sam is there to offer his support and encouraging words. I started watching Rookie Bluewhen it was in the fifth season, and this is the first episode I ever watched. I quickly fell in love with the show, and now it’s in my top 3 favorite shows list. For A Moment was the perfect song for this scene. The simplicity of the scene makes it a perfect fit for the soft melody.

I’ve been on refreshing my Twitter and Instagram feed every second for the past 24 hours hoping that someone (anyone) would tell me that the spoilers for The Originals are inaccurate. If you have not read about the spoilers and would NOT like to know, please stop reading now. 

No, seriously. STOP. Because I’m unintentionally going to spoil it for you, and you will be very very devastated. 

Now for those of you who are up to date on this very very tragic ending, I will start off this therapy session by saying, WTF!!! 

Now that that’s all out of my system, I would like to have a more adult-like conversation about The Originals upcoming series finale. First off, I would like to say that Niklaus Mikaelson has been one of the best characters to grace the presence of the fictional towns that are known as Mystical Falls and New Orleans. Klaus Mikaelson went from being the arrogant, evil (maybe Satan himself), self-centered big bad hybrid to a caring, loving brother, father and friend. His character development has been one of the most beautiful things witnessed in TV history. The same man who refused to show an ounce of humanity for centuries has become more open to love and life’s possibilities. The same man who wanted nothing more than to be king of New Orleans and have ultimate power is the same man who has learned that power means nothing without those you love most. 

The spoilers I've read do not do justice to a character that has become a fan favorite as both the villain and the protagonist. In The Vampire Diaries, Klaus was introduced as the villain who wanted to kill Elena Gilbert, killed Elena’s Aunt Jenna, slaughtered 12 of his hybrids, and about thousands of other people from around the world. He was the most feared and hated original. 

When we first began to see a glimpse of hope and humanity in Klaus, is around the time he met Caroline. Klaus and Caroline have a chemistry that can not be imitated or faked. This much is true from Caroline’s visit to New Orleans and Klaus’ visit to Mystic Falls. 

As we began to see more and more of the version of Klaus that Hope deserved as a father -- the Klaus he was before Mikael ruined him and his humanity -- I began to realize that Klaus is more than just a villain who turned good. He’s a representation for all the bad things that become beautiful. He is the representation for the moments you’ve wished you could take back before you realized those moments are the very reason you’ve become the person you are. Has Klaus made mistakes? Absolutely. However, I wholeheartedly believe he deserves a shot at redemption. He’s had little to no time with his daughter. He’s had to watch from the shadows and sacrifice their relationship so that she and their family could live their lives in peace. All of the sacrifices from the time he knew of her existence have been for his Hope. I think that is a man who deserves a chance to live and get to see his daughter grow old and have his epic love. 

If Klaus dies, Hope will become an orphan. I know what you’re thinking. If Hope is an orphan, it can build up to the Legacies storyline. While this may be true, there’s a way that this alleged storyline can still be accomplished without the death of our beloved original hybrid. If Klaus dies, Hope will be absolutely devastated. Klaus is the main reason Hope has managed to stay sane since the death of her mother. In the moments after Hayley’s death, Hope wanted to die. She literally begged her father to just let her die. She couldn’t imagine a world without her mother in it and most importantly she didn’t want to. She didn’t know a world where she only had one parent -- a parent that had been absent practically her whole life. It was extremely touching to watch Klaus become the father we always knew he was capable of being. He went from the little boy and a young adult who absorbed all the vicious and atrocious things Mikael had ever said, a man who’d become paranoid, resentful and full of hatred to a man who’d been there for his daughter when she needed him most. He’s proof that the cycle can end. He didn't allow his story to become Hope’s story. When she finally made her first transformation, he told her how proud he was. He didn’t make her feel small or treat her like an abomination. He is the very opposite of the type of father Mikael was. He’s the very best father to Hope that he can be. 

 The Originals is relatable in a way that shows that no one is perfect. No one knows how to be the perfect parent, brother/sister or friend, but it is up to us to write our narrative. Klaus was raised by one of the most hateful men. He was abused both verbally and physically, he was hunted and tormented. He lost his biological father at an early age, unbeknownst to him, but despite all of these obstacles, he became the father that he’d always dreamed of. He believed that he’d inflicted damage on Hope that only a father was capable of doing. He may have been right but he has fought like hell to make it up to her. He is willing to make the ultimate sacrifice to save his only daughter. He is willing to lay his life on the line to save hers. This is a character that deserves more time to tell his story. He has so much more life to live and stories to tell. 

I hope he gets to tell them.

Over the last few months, I've been thinking about creating a second blog. A more personal blog - not relating to tv and film. I've been through so much in my 24 years of life, and I've learned that sometimes it's better to let it all out rather than hold it in. I've always been good at writing my thoughts and feelings down. If I can reach someone and keep them from feeling some of the heartache and pain I've endured... maybe I'll feel like what I'm going through will be worth it in the end.

I came across an old picture of myself today. It was taken at my 16th birthday party. I look happy and so full of life. I was caught mid-laugh. I was laughing at something one of my family members said. It was one of the best days of my life. I was surrounded by all of the most important people in my life. We celebrated the fact that I made it to sixteen. I know it seems cliche to say, but some people don’t get to see their 16th birthday. I was lucky enough to say that wasn’t the case for me. As I stared at the photo, I felt a strange feeling of jealousy. I found myself jealous of the young woman in the picture. She looks so carefree. She looks like she is having the time of her life. It has only been about eight years since the photo was taken, but it feels like a lifetime ago. So many things have happened since then. I’ve gotten my heartbroken…multiple times. I’ve lost myself, and then found myself again. I graduated high school and college. I’ve had so so many ups and downs. I’ve lived. Truly lived. When I first looked at the mesmerizing photo, I silently wished I could instantly go back. Back to the time I was so happy and carefree. Before I got my heartbroken and completely changed within the depths of my soul. Once I thought about all the good things that have happened to me since then, I had a change of heart. Deep down, I know I’ll be that happy again. One day.

Sisters

Summary: After Oliver and Felicity reinstate their engagement, Felicity and Thea quickly grow closer as they learn the ins and outs of having a sister. (series of 3 drabbles)

@almondblossomme​’s original request (the inspiration for the first drabble): “Thea asks Felicity what happened to hairstyle they spent an hour working on after she sees Felicity with in freshly washed curly locks and Felicity doesn’t know how to tell her that it had to go when Oliver pulled her into the shower with him”

“Fe-li-ci-ty.”

Something about Thea drawing out Felicity’s name was far less pleasant than when her brother did it.  Oliver always sounded like he was cherishing every syllable of Felicity’s name on his lips.  Taking the time to recall their past and make promises for the future.  Thea… well Thea just sounded mad.  Every syllable was a threat.  A promise of revenge to be had at a later date.  And suddenly Felicity knew what it felt like to be stared down by Speedy the superhero, rather than Thea, her future sister-in-law.

“What happened to your hair?! We spent an hour on it, I only left for 30 minutes to get myself dressed! Did you fall in a pool or something?!  The curls are ruined.”  

“Well, um…” Felicity stuttered before trying to deflect, “You look nice? I really love your dress?” Felicity put on an apologetic smile and motioned to Thea’s floor length silver gown.  Thea could actually get into formal clothes and apply flawless makeup in under 30 minutes?  Sometimes Felicity forgot that this girl, who now spends so much time in a mask and chasing down bad guys, had actually been attending galas since she could walk.

Felicity, on the other hand, needed plenty of help. Now that she and Oliver were re-engaged, the press was going to be taking a ton of pictures. Which was why she had invited Thea over to help her in the first place.

“We’re supposed to be at the benefit in less than 20 minutes! What happened?!” Thea continued to groan to no one in particular, balling her tiny hands into fists.

“You… don’t want to know.” Felicity bit her lip, trying to ignore the drips of water starting to soak the shoulders of her cotton robe.  Asking Thea to hand her a towel at this point would just make the smaller of the Queen siblings more terrifying.  It was moments like this that Felicity could really see Moira in her daughter.

“Why wouldn’t I want to know what happened!? Unless some metahuman who targets beautifully curled locks attacked you, I have no idea what good excuse you could have!”

“Well you know Oliver has been away…” Felicity mumbled, taking a seat at the vanity’s bench as Thea began to pace back and forth in the bedroom.

Arrow Predictions

I predict…

1. Oliver will become mayor of Star City.

Why, you ask?

Because for one, he has been wearing one too many dress shirts and ties while filming the finale. Two, once they cross Darhk off the board, they are more than likely taking down Ruve too. Which means Star City will need another candidate for mayor - I nominate Oliver Queen ladies and gentlemen! 

Also, Wendy Mericle teased that there will some things that they explore in season 5 - particularly with Oliver. Maybe they’re going to explore his life as mayor! Oliver Queen does become mayor in the GA comics. They don’t always use every little detail from the comics, (clearly) but this could be one of the things they do use!

what further breaks my heart is the guilt that Diggle will carry :’( he’s gonna blame himself hard, I think.

Maybe Felicity, too, because she wasn’t on the comms, she might beat herself up and think “if I hadn’t left, maybe she’d be alive”

And Oliver will have to be the one to tell them, “it’s not your fault,” and help them with their survivor’s guilt for a change

And Thea’s revenge hate for Malcolm will burn brighter, and she’s going to want him dead

God knows how Quentin will take this..probably revenge hate for Darhk and he’ll try to kill him

in the following darkness surrounding Laurel’s death, Oliver will be the light that leads them out

I gotta say, even if there was only a brief Olicity moment this episode, it was powerful. The way Felicity ran into Oliver's arms and clawed at his back to tug him as close as possible. The way Oliver relaxed into her and breathed her in for the brief moment. One small scene and it is abundantly clear how much these two mean to each other and need each other. They are each other's safe haven. They are each other's home.

After reading your Writer's Perspective, do you have anything more to say now that Laurel's dead?

I honestly figured that she was going to die in tonight’s episode. I had other predictions, but she was top of my list. It’s always sad to watch a character die -- no matter what you think of said character. It was a good episode though. Very emotional. I think that her death will be very important going forward. We are going to get to see how the team will react in the aftermath of her death. Diggle seems like he’s going to go to the dark side for a little while -- which is going to be very interesting. The writers definitely took a chance, but it’s necessary when writing TV shows. Things can become so repetitive after a while, so they have to take new directions to shake things up.

A Writer’s Perspective

Die-hard comic fans can be really frustrating when it comes to Arrow. It seems as though (some) of them would rather see Felicity die, a character that has so many interesting things going on for her that ties into the plot, than Laurel just because Laurel is Black Canary. I may not be a professional writer, but I have written a script for a movie, a one-hour TV pilot, and I’m currently writing scripts for a web series idea, so let me inform y'all a little when it comes to writing. 

First, I understand that Black Canary is very important in the comic book world -- however, she does not have much to do on the show. If you set your personal feelings aside for each of the characters and REALLY look at the facts -- Laurel doesn’t have much going for herself as a character. The only truly important thing she has done lately is argue at Darhk’s hearing. There are many times that I have to say, “Was Laurel even there?” because she’s almost nonexistent. In writing, we want to give each of our characters their own voices and story lines. It worked for Laurel...up until recently. Her storyline just isn’t there anymore apart from her being Black Canary. 

Second, the EP has already said that anyone is fair game to die. (Apart from Oliver) I don’t know about you, but that makes me even more excited to go on this journey. I’ll admit I’ll be devastated if it’s Felicity in the grave, but I looked at all the facts. Felicity has so much going on right now. 1. She’s CEO of Palmer Tech. 2. Her father has recently come back into her life. I know he’s in jail, but I’m pretty sure we will see him before the season ends. 3. She’s going to be working on a secret project dealing with the implant that helped her walk again. 4. Her relationship with Oliver. I don’t think it’s quite over yet. I understand that some of you hate their relationship -- that’s fine -- everyone is entitled to their own opinion. (Plus EBR has been filming recently) I just think too much is happening in her life right now that is important. (This was for all of the people who think it’s felicity in the grave, and her appearance in the limo is a hallucination of Oliver’s.)

Third, the writers have say so in the way they write. I’m pretty sure the ideas that we see unfold throughout the series have been thought about by people above the writers. (like Eps, show runners, etc.) I understand better than anyone that how when things don’t go your way you want to throw in the towel and quit watching the show but open your mind a little bit. Writing is a beautiful thing. There’s nothing like seeing what you’ve written come to life onscreen. It’s like living vicariously through these characters. When you watch a show, it’s like leaving your world and stepping into theirs. It’s such a beautiful and mind-blowing experience. You may hate how they are doing things now, but you may understand why they did it at the end of the season. Just because Black Canary is in the comics doesn’t mean she will always be on Arrow. The show is it’s own unique story. I don’t mean to be blunt when I say this, but if you want the exact comic book story then go get a comic book! People complain about things when it’s not going the way they want them to. I’ve got news for you…things happen. Sometimes there are certain actors who want out of their contracts, sometimes people get fired, (because all this stuff is a job to them) sometimes things have to go in a different direction because of creative purposes. You just never know why the writers and Eps do the things they do. If you really really loved the show, you would just kick your feet up, get a bowl of popcorn, sit back and enjoy the show. 

Also, I feel that I should say I’m not saying it’s for sure Laurel in the grave. Although I have a few predictions, I have no idea who it’s going to be. I’m along for the journey just everyone else. My point is that we should just all keep an open mind when it comes to Arrow’s creative process.
