“They are nice. I love them very much.” he nodded. “Meredith can’t cook, but gives good cuddles.” he smiled. “I won’t tell a soul.” he promised. He shrugged. “Family is important. You’re my family now.” he didn’t know what else to say. He was trying to feel those words, to feel like a Shepherd.
“That’s good. They’re some of the nicest people I know, so you’re in good hands.” he smiled back. “I agree — family is important. I always put them first before everyone else because they all mean a lot to me. Since we’re family now, just ask if you need anything.”

“Yeah, but that’s not nothing. It’s a pretty big thing, actually. It’s cool, way cooler than anything I’d ever be known for,” Mollie insisted. “I doubt they would’ve been mad if you missed when you were sick, but yeah, not missing anything important is a plus. Oh, no, I… I don’t. Not really.”
“You still have that dancing thing going for you, right? That’s still something to be proud of, and I think it’s cooler than what I do.” he smiled. “They wouldn’t have even noticed if I was gone for a month, but I thought they would get mad, even though they wouldn’t have cared.” he added. “Well — if you are ditching class, don’t let mom or dad find out.”

“Hey, it’s chill. As long as we don’t make the ghosties angry or anything like that, I’m sure we’re perfectly fine. And even if they are watching us, they’re probably like ‘oh, wow. Those two seem a little spooked, maybe we ought to go easy on ‘em. No haunting here’.” He couldn’t keep from giggling, just a little, at his own words. Cam’s chest was visually moving as he took deep breaths, trying to chill from the fear due to the sudden noises. “I’m sorry,” he spoke again, trying to catch his breath. “I’ll try my best,” he chuckled a little, running his fingers through his hair. “Have you ever done this before?”
“I don’t know Cam. These ghosties or whatever might be mad that we’re invading their space by trespassing down here — but I think they don’t mind that were here. They might enjoy our company. I hope they do go easy on us. That would be good on our part. I don’t want to be haunted. he nodded as he continued shining the light on his phone around the room. “Yeah — i’ve done this before, but not with anyone making noises and nearly scaring the life out of me. I honestly though that was a ghost trying to attack me. So, no more of that, ok?”

“You’re known for other stuff too. But this is a good thing to add,” Mollie smiled. “That’s insane, Kade. I can barely keep up perfect attendance for a month, let alone for years.”
“Hmm, well — that’s debatable. I mean I have a somewhat good rep on the internet but that’s about it.”“ he sighed. “As a kid, I used to think the teachers would get mad at me if I missed a day so it just stuck with me ever since. At least that way I know i’m not missing anything important. Do you ditch class or something, Mollie?”

“I think I will get used to it. Everyone is nice and I like that.” he smiled. “I will. Derek and Amelia are going to help me….when I’m older of course.” he nodded, trying to feel as confident as he sounded. “So that means I will be the best ever and you will be in good hands.” he smiled.
“You’re right — everyone here is really nice. I don’t think i know anybody close to my family that’s mean.” he nodded. “Derek and Amelia are great, they’re probably the best surgeons around — don’t tell my parents I said that.” he laughed as he looked at Jasper. “Glad to know I can count on you to keep me well someday.”

“Are you sure? Because if you need to study, I can leave you to do that.. or I could try to help, but I don’t know how well that would go,” Lexie said. She was happy when Kaden said that he wanted to spend time with her It always felt good to hear that from any of her kids. “Awesome. I don’t really know what we should watch, but I’m sure we’ll figure something out.”
“No — I’ve been studying for almost three hours. I need a break. I know it won’t end very well if you try to help, but thanks for asking. It’s really complicated stuff.” he smiled at her as he stood up. “There’s probably a movie on Netflix we can watch, or we could watch, or we could binge watch a bunch of Friends episodes. That’s my favorite show.”

Jasper nodded. “There are a lot of girls in this family.” he agreed. He of course hadn’t met most of his new family yet. It was a bit overwhelming when he thought about it. He frowned in disappointment when Kade said they probably wouldn’t allow kids in the viewing area. “I don’t think that is crazy. It makes you happy, the way brains make Derek and Amelia happy. The way I feel when I am drawing. I’m going to be a doctor one day, so I can draw away all the bad stuff in peoples head.”
“There is a lot of them, but i’ve got used to it. They’re not too bad. I like having them around...sometimes.” he smiled. “Thanks kid. It does make me very happy. I’ve always liked film since I was small. I bet you’ll make a great doctor someday if you work hard. If I ever need to see one when i’m older, i’ll come to you.”

Jasper nodded. “Lexie told me about you. Well that I had cousins now.” he smiled. It still felt weird and he hadn’t started calling Meredith or Derek mom and dad yet. “Why not? It’s so cool. I mean the ones on TV at least.”
“Are you going to be a doctor too?” he asked.
“Cousins? Well, that’s great. It will be nice to have another one that’s not a girl.” he grinned. He considered a lot of people who worked with his parents as family even though they were not blood related, so he wasn’t one bit surprised when the boy said they were cousins. “Because the viewing area is usually restricted to employees and they probably won’t let kids in. I agree, they do look interesting on TV.” he smiled. “No, I don’t plan on being a doctor. I want to be a director, even though some people think i’m crazy for picking that as a career choice.”

“You’ve gotta be the only college student on the planet with a perfect attendance record. Did you have a perfect attendance record in high school too?”
“I think I am the only student, and I plan on keeping it that way. This way i’ll finally be known for something.” he half-joked. “Yes I did have perfect attendance in high school too. I think I probably got an award for that.”

He thought about it for a moment. “You are Kade, right? Lexie’s son, right?” he asked. Got to avoid that stranger danger. “If she is in surgery, can we watch?” he asked, excitedly, not even really waiting for an answer.
“Yeah! I’m Kade, and i’m Lexie’s son. Which makes Meredith my aunt so I know her pretty well.” he grinned. He was happy that the boy knew who he was, since he always felt that most people often forgot about him. “I don’t think we’re allowed to watch the surgeries, but — maybe we can sneak in if nobody’s watching.”

“Where is Meredith?!”

“Thanks, Kaden.” She smiled and sat back to listen when he spoke, nodding her head slightly. “The testing is always the biggest pain. I’m sure you’re doing great though. And I’m sure finals will go well.”
“You’re welcome.” he smiled. “It is a pain to study for and it takes up so much of your time. Sometimes you don’t even know what’s important and what’s not, so it’s a little stressful.” he explained as he nodded his head. “Thanks, I hope they’ll go well too.”

“ ooh, an edible present, ” veronica’s smile grew. “ you didn’t really have to get me anything, kade. ”
“I knew you would like an edible present.” he grinned. “Of course I had to get you something. You’re my sister, plus it’s your birthday. What kind of brother would I be if I didn’t get you something?”

Lexie laughed, stepping all the way into her son’s room. She loosely crossed her arms and glanced around for a moment. “Are you busy?” she asked. “I thought maybe we could order pizza or something, throw on a movie, and spend some time together,” she told him. “We don’t have to, of course. But I thought it would be nice. I’m always busy, and I want to be able to take advantage of the time I do have at home and spend it with you.”
“No — i’m not busy. I was just finishing up studying. I have finals in a few weeks and I want to make sure i’m prepared.” he said as he closed his books and placed them on the table beside his bed. “Sure, I’d like to spend some time with you.” he smiled. He was happy that she suggested this considering it was hard to get one-on-one attention with having so many siblings. “We can have pizza and watch a movie. That’s great. I can order food for us right now.”

“Tabbies are so adorable and his name is Peanut,” she grinned, “I have to meet him. Maybe I can get my parents to bring Lola up here one day and we can have like a play date… I don’t know if animals are actually allowed but I’m getting her certified as a therapy cat so she can come visit whenever she wants.”
“I love tabbies, which is the main reason why I adopted him. He’s not very good around strangers but he’s really sweet once he warms up to you.” he grinned. “Yeah, we can set up a cat play date if the hospital allows it. I hope we can, because Peanut needs some cat friends.”
