Final embroidery piece. I couched dried flowers onto calico because Kiefer often stuck on pieces of dried foliage to his paintings to bring natural elements to his paintings which I found beautiful and wanted to integrate into my work.

The next embroidery piece I completed. This one is rougher and darker compared to my first. Again, I used hand and machine embroidery to contrast between the softness and roughness.

Piece inspired by the portrait on ‘A Winter Landscape’. I did this by both hand and machine. By hand was more loose and soft and the machine achieved tighter, finer work. I think this turned out beautifully and I enjoyed making it.

This is my swatcher of my embroidery work which helped me to try out many different stitches. I made eyelets, bullion, feather and french knot stitches. I also tried out stitching on another piece of fabric to add more dimension. Finally I used a basic back stitch. I used colours based off Kiefer’s painting ‘A Winter Landscape’ as it is the most colourful and delicate of his works that I chose. I think this piece was a success and a good gateway into more detailed work.

These are the paintings of Kiefer’s that I was most inspired by and chose to base my work off. They’re, visceral, textural and nostalgic to me as they remind me of the bog beside my house growing up as a child.

Some sketches and photos graphs of my pieces and me wearing my scarf in the sunshine! Really happy with how this element of my project worked out.

This was my second cable knit and it came out well I’m very happy with it. I did reverse stockinette for the sides and then the cable in the middle and it stands out really beautifully.

Irish Moss Stitch scarf!!!
I really wanted to continue with these stitch and make a bigger piece because it was just so beautiful. I added some tassels to the end because of some mark making I had drawn in my mood board. Really happy with this.

Irish Moss Stitch
A new stitch I found and absolutely love. It was pretty simple and repetitive and I love the consistency of the rows. This one really reminds me of marshy ground.

My first knitting swatch
I love knitting and I felt it tied into my project well because it’s very textural which reminded me of Kiefer a lot. This was my first attempt at cable knitting but I don’t think it was very successful. The stitches are a bit too tight so the detail isn’t there but it was a good leaning experience because I never used a cable needle before and it was a bit difficult to get at first. I also had to make a make shift one because I didn’t have one but it was easy I just shaved a wooden stick to have a point and worked! I hadn’t knitted for awhile before this and was a challenge but I enjoyed it.

My mood boards
I really enjoyed making these. I used watercolour, marker, graphite pencils and added some dried flowers and twigs too. I big part of my project is about adding texture and having an almost primal feeling of being in the outdoors. I even tried to light some paper outside and left some paper in the rain like Kiefer did which was fun. His paintings are really beautiful and was nice to recreate elements of them.

Artist’s research - Anselm Kiefer - colour inspiration
I really enjoyed researching Kiefer’s work because they felt very textural and dynamic to me. His paintings are very raw and her uses interesting processes like blow-torching and leaving his paintings outside so the elements affect them. They reminded me of the bog beside my house which felt nice that I could tie it into my personal life and relate to them. While photocopy his paintings I also added some different colours to them which reminded me of nature and are quite gritty but also some soft ones. Sepia was my favourite colour to use.

Artist research - Noriko Kuresumi
I really like the flow of these ceramics pieces. They’re very emotive to me almost as if they were dancing or tumbling like waves. They remind me of my unglazed pieces which are supposed to reflect a calm feeling and swaying when listening to ambient music or instrumentals.
