MOVEMENT
For my project movement I wanted to keep it simple and focused on the growth of mushrooms, in the end I loved how each elective ended up helping with the other ones and tied in together, although next time I would have spent more time focusing on the fashion side as that’s what I enjoyed the most and I think I could have done more with it, I loved how my screen prints came out although I wish I had done a more complicated mushroom.

issey miyake
Issey miyake combines western and eastern elements in his work. He’s is famous for his construction and use of pleats which remind me so much of the underneath of mushrooms and his technology driven clothing designs.
He was born in Hiroshima and studied art in Tokyo before heading to Paris to study fashion in Ecole de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne. This is where he started working with guy laroche at givenchy and then Geoff rey Beene in New York.

MOVEMENT FASHION WORKSHOP
I first drew small mushroom outlines cut them up and assembled them in order to create a look. I love how it turned out when I combined the white and black mushrooms and did the head piece I think it really made the look come together.
I created puffy pleats to emulate a mushroom out of old fabric, I think the idea of pleats really corresponds with the concept of mushrooms and the underneath looks like pleats as it’s layers of lines.
I cut out my prints and attached them to fabric and then the fabric with the design I created.

MOVEMENT SCREEN PRINTING WORKSHOP
….
I loved the screen printing workshop. We first sketched out our designs then cut out our stencils which then transferred into our prints. I decided to go with the neon bright colours as I was inspired by some of Alex greys pieces and that some mushrooms are bioluminescent, this is because of the luciferins in the mushrooms. That is the same compound that makes fireflies light up at night. This ability is used to attract insects, they then spread the mushrooms spores elsewhere into the forest which then allows the fungi to reproduce

MOVEMENT PAINT WORKSHOP WITH EOIN
Jeff was not present this week so we had to make do with doing charcoal drawings of each other. I struggled with this at first but after a while I got the hang of it and I really like how the Charcoal drawings came out in the end.
the next day we moved on to making a tool that caused a mark, I chose to use a mushroom that I cut up and make a mark with it in a circular pattern to mimic the shape of the underneath of a mushroom.
I first did it onto paper then painted a large piece a fabric and decided to do it onto that so I could use it in the fashion workshop. I really loved how it turned out in the end.
Artist research :
The Art Of Repetition use of two or more of the same or similar elements such as colour, shape or line.
Gustav Klimt was an Austrian artist, he’s most well known for his paintings and murals. His tree of life mural presents lots of patterns. The tree of life is based on the art nouveau style in a symbolic painting genre. The tree represents wisdom, protection, strength and beauty. It shows the continuity of life but also it’s complexities. There are intricate repeating geometric patterns seen in the piece.
I wanted my pieces to have a pattern and sense of continuity aswell. There’s also a psychedelic feel with the spiral I formed with the mushrooms relating back to Alex grey.

MOVEMENT PRINT WORKSHOP
In this workshop I decided to use Lino I cut out a simple design of the mushroom and print it in red and pink ink. I did not like how this turned out I think it looks more like a wheel than a mushroom as it looks too circular and unnatural. At first the design had not come out properly as I had applied too much ink and not applied enough pressure. I also cut up the mushrooms I had brought in dipped them in ink and stamped the mushroom onto a page I prefer how this came out as it looks more natural.
RESEARCH
spore prints
The New Hampshire gardening solution made a blog recording them exploring spore prints.
They collect mushrooms, and break the stem off the mushroom and place the cap gill side down on the chosen paper, they then cover it with a small bowl to keep it moist although to fully get the print it does take some time for it to form properly I decided to experiment and carry this out myself.
I cut out the stems placed the mushrooms on to the paper and placed a bowl over them.
Although in the end it did not work out as I think it needed more time and because the mushrooms weren’t fresh they were dry so it cause barley any print on the paper.

MOVEMENT sketch book work
Exploring different mushrooms , spores .
There’s are some rough sketches of mushrooms in the sketch book I used during this project and I tested out different materials in here and different shapes. I decided I want to mainly focus on the underneath part of the mushroom as seen above as I think I can explore many things with the basic shapes and explore different mediums. I can make it complicated but also keep it simple.
Initial artist research
ALEX GREY.
Alex grey is an American visual artist, he’s know for creating spiritual and psychedelic artwork. Although he works in many different forms including performance art, process art, instillation art, sculpture, visionary art and paintings.
Ken Wilbur , integral philosopher and author described Alex greys work as ‘ In a world gone postmodern, bereft of meaning and value, cut loose on a sea of irony and indifference, Alex is taking a stunning stand: there is god, there is spirit, there is a transcendental ground and goal of human development and unfolding. Higher realities are available to us that is the message of Alex greys art’
Alex grey has said that the reason for the use of mushrooms in his art work is to show humanity’s long, deep and ongoing connection with great spirit through psychedelic sacrament.
The reason I take interest in his work is one the use of mushrooms and two the fluorescent colours which I would like to include in my project.

MOVEMENT paint work shop week one.
For this workshop we worked with a live nude model Jeff. We started with a palette of 3 colours red , blue, and white. We then took half of the white and added it into the first colour, mixed that then added it to the secondary colour. This gave us a palette of three distinct colours. We started with composition of where Jeff was placed in the room the floor and background and under painted them. Then we began creating his form and capturing the light and shadows in the background. I don’t like how my painting of him came out in the end I wouldn’t say painting is my thing although I do like how the background came out and the colour palette.
We then went on to do quick posed sketches of people in the church gallery some sitting and some standing. I preferred this as I do prefer drawing although I do prefer to take my time with things so the quick change of poses were hard to keep up with. In the end though I did like how some of them came out.
Like in the workshop I wanted to take three colours and mix them in order to Create a palette which is what I did in my darker painting of mushrooms although I did go in and add white highlights in the end. I quickly sketched out the shapes of mushrooms I wanted to paint like in the workshop and finished the painting in a short amount of time.
RESEARCH. My project with the theme movement is about mushrooms, Mushrooms can almost double in size over 24 hours.
I chose the focus my project on mushrooms because I find them interesting and I wanted to go in a simpler direction than I did last time. Mushrooms are interesting for many reasons including that they are closer to humans than plants according to their D.N.A. They also help trees talk to each other and are the largest living thing on earth.

DISRUPT
In the end I’m happy with how I combined both the derelict buildings and the skull although i should have moved more out of my comfort zone and explored different mediums.
I wanted my work to come across messy to correlate with both the matters I focused on being such disruptive and chaotic elements.

Again trying to merge the park sign and eye socket is the animal skull together and on the other side have the horn of the skull emerging from the broken down half part of the roof further disrupting the derelict home.
