5 Little things that help.
It’s that time of year, where the cold sets in and the days get shorter. It’s a beautiful time of year, but a time that I dread also. I’m writing about a few things that sometimes make me feel better and they may help you too.
🌥️ Wake up early. I feel like I have more time to get things done and more me time, especially when the days begin to shorten.
☕Tea, or any hot drink in the morning. Sometimes it’s hard to eat in the mornings, tea might be a little easier on the tummy and keep you warm.
🌺Make time for yourself. People spend a lot of time rushing and worrying. There are definitely times when that’s appropriate, but it’s also important to give yourself some space. Morning stretches, listening to some soothing music for 10 minutes or even just sitting in your own silence. It can take a bit longer to get up in the morning when it’s dark, so give yourself enough time to energise.
🍂Try and go for a wander. Anywhere, but nature places are best. Set aside an hour every day or so to do this. Maybe even collect little things on your travels, like fallen leaves, rocks, or seashells. Take some long deep breaths of the cold air, feel yourself in the now.
☀️Like plants, we require sunlight! We require sunlight to produce serotonin, a hormone which is thought to regulate mood. If you can, try and expose yourself to daylight as much as you can during the winter. For those who work during these hours, it is possible to buy ‘light boxes’ which claim to produce the same effect. I have one myself, which I switch on for an hour on dark and overcast days.
Take care of yourselves. I know it’s hard to, especially when you might feel like you don’t deserve it. But trust me, you do. You deserve to be cared for, even if it’s you doing the caring!
