Me: [sitting up in a straitjacket] So obviously there are parallels between Book Elphaba and Book Fiyero. Both are disparaged by their skin color. Both are described as “pauper” nobility (Elphaba as the Third Thropp Descending but raised humbly as a missionary girl and Fiyero as the Arjiki prince). Both are talked about behind their backs and are subject to humiliation (Elphaba being tricked into going to Caprice-in-the-Pines and Fiyero being attacked by magicked antlers on his first day at Shiz). Both are characterized as intense, introverted, sensitive, and private. But I think I found another parallel: Their complicated friendships with a well-to-do conventionally attractive Gillikinese who initially scorns them out of prejudice. Yes, I’m talking about Elphaba and Glinda, but also Fiyero and Avaric (!!). Avaric, who called Fiyero’s skin “the color of shit,” but was seen later with his arm around Fiyero. He is also the one who kept the most in touch with Fiyero after Shiz, and they stay together in the same club in the Emerald City. Unlike Elphaba with Glinda, who expresses fondness for her, Fiyero is ambivalent about Avaric. But unlike Elphaba, who seems to influence Glinda more than she was influenced by Glinda, Fiyero did seem to conform more to Shiz life. In a way, I feel Musical Elphaba and Glinda’s friendship resembles more Fiyero and Avaric’s (implied) dynamic more than Book Elphaba and Glinda’s. I don’t know, am I making sense?
