i was a descendants fan from three years ago to midway through 2021, when my interest started fizzling out. then, the godawful wedding short caused me to leave the fandom completely.

after scrolling through a few reddit threads on worldbuilding, it occurred to me just how bad it is in this franchise. i know that it’s for kids but it really is appallingly lazy.

for one thing, its hard to tell if it’s supposed to be set in some alternate universe. auradon is obviously a fictional place but france is mentioned in the be our guest remix, harry has a scottish accent and dr facilier appears, who is originally from a movie set in new orleans. the united states clearly being a nod to the actual place with that acronym makes the last point worse.

we also don’t know when it’s meant to be set. the source movies vary all over the place and they use various items of modern technology. this is a minor point compared to the others, but still.

now, as I said before, all this can, i suppose, be excused by the fact that, in the end, the target audience of these films are kids. there are a million problems you can find but it’s not meant to be thought that deeply about. but the place names. my goodness, the place names.

none of these appear in the three movies, as far as I’m aware, but they’ve become accepted by the fandom. whoever came up with cinderellasburg should be slapped. same with the genius who decided calling a place charmington was a good idea. and apparently whatever the fuck northern wei is was formed twenty years before the events of descendants from china, according to the wiki, which makes NO FUCKING SENSE.

it is nearly two in the morning and i am ranting about kids movies i didn’t think i cared about anymore. i should be physically prevented from sharing my thoughts past eleven, methinks

It absolutely perplexes me how riverdale still has a fandom. I mean, widespread interest (that was still mostly due people marvelling at how absurd it was) died out after the fourth season but still this tag is being posted in. Still there are edits, unfunny incorrect quotes and ship discourse like you would expect from a thriving fanbase. why haven’t you people just… given up?
