Missing (7/?)
Tumblr media
Summary: Your next door neighbor, Luke Patterson (a.k.a. your longtime crush) has gone missing, and you think you could help finding him.
Word count: 2.7k (I think, I don’t really know lol)
Warnings: none!
“...And it was actually fun. I think we were all there. All the boys from the block, I mean. Josh, Victor, Lucas- what-? Stop stealing my fries!”
You and Max were at a diner, having dinner on a Friday night.
“Sorry.” You laughed. “I’m glad you had fun. You’re welcome.”
He scoffed. “Why?”
“Uh, if I didn’t tell Josh you were going, you would’ve said you weren’t. And you went and had fun. Again, you’re welcome.”
“You’re insufferable.” Max shook his head, smiling. “But, yeah. Thank you, I guess.”
“I’ll take it.”
“Speaking of Josh.” He said, grabbing some fries. “Tomorrow’s your big day.”
You rolled you eyes. “You say it like it’s gonna be our wedding. It’s just a date. I wouldn’t even call it a date yet.”
“You, maybe. Josh seems excited for your ‘simple’ date.”
You decided to take a sip of your drink instead of responding.
“You don’t seem too excited though.” He analyzed you for a moment. “Still thinking about Luke?”
“First of all, don’t look at me like that. You’re looking at me like I’m a child.” You rolled your eyes. “And second of all... well, yes, of course. I thought it would be easy to forget about a crush. It’s got to a point that’s just ridiculous.”
“By the way you say it, it doesn’t sound like a simple crush.”
“Well, it can’t be more. I don’t know him.”
“Have you ever heard about love at first sight?”
“That question shows me how little you know about love at first sight.”
“Oh, yeah?” He said, challenging. “How much do you know?”
“Enough to know that my case with Luke it’s not what you’re suggesting.”
“Come on.” He groaned. “Just accept it.”
“Accept what?”
“That you like him.”
“I do like him, that’s the thing. I like Luke without knowing who he is, exactly. That doesn’t make any sense! Just- stop it. Leave it like that.” You said before Max could say anything else. “You really just love to argue or disagree with everything I say, right?”
“If you say it like that, it sounds bad.”
“It is bad, Max.”
“Whatever.” He rolled his eyes. And you shook your head in disapproval at your friend, which he decided to ignore. “How’s Mrs. Patterson?”
You visited her that day after school, like you’ve been doing the past week.
You included visiting her as a daily activity on your schedule. You went to her house for at least an hour, go back home to study for another two, and then, you went to your dance class.
“She’s good. Better, if that’s what you’re asking.”
“She does look better.” He nodded. “I’m really glad... have you told her, though?”
You looked down to your glass of juice. “No. She haven’t asked and I never really see the need of doing so.”
You had lots of opportunities to tell her, but you never did it. After overthinking about it a lot, you ended up with the conclusion that, she wasn’t asking because maybe she already knows (courtesy of your mom), or she just really didn’t believe you could find his son.
You did promise her that you would back up if you had to. So maybe, if she knew, that’s why she wasn’t mad or upset.
But you still promised to give her that second chance...
With that thought, you looked for the guitar pick, that was still hanging around your neck, and just held it with your fingers for a second. Something that you’ve been doing a lot lately. You couldn’t take it off. You tried, but you didn’t want to, for some reason you didn’t exactly know.
Even though you weren’t doing anything to find Luke anymore, it still seemed to be something that you were calling out to do. Everything reminded you to him. Not only since you’ve been going to his house a lot, but also for other reasons. Like the fact that the posters you saw at Mrs. Patterson’s last week, were all over the neighborhood now. Maybe even further.
“I mean, if she’s not asking, I guess...” Max shrugged. “It’s not that big of a deal.”
“I guess...”
And still, you felt the guilt in your chest.
“Anyways, where are you going tomorrow? With Josh.”
“I don’t know. I don’t think we said any place in specific.”
“We’ll see about that then... if you wanted fries, why didn’t you buy some?! Stop eating mine!”
The next day, the hot whether made you wear a nice and simple sundress to go out with Josh.
Your sister was finishing combing your hair when you heard the doorbell ring, and you two went downstairs.
Your dad opened the door. You weren’t worried about that since he did know Josh and his parents, but if this worked out, you weren’t too far from getting a similar lecture like the one Tamra got just last week.
When your dad was done with him, you said goodbye to your family and went outside next to Josh, whoopened the driver’s door of his car for you.
“So where are we going?” You asked, looking at him while he was driving.
He looked good. Like he always did. And you were waiting impatiently for those butterflies in your stomach to come at the sight of him. Like it would happen with Luke.
But they never did.
We still have time, you internally said.
“I was thinking... does the movies sound right to you?” He asked.
“Sounds great.” You smiled.
“Great, great.” He smiled back.
You never found it hard to make conversation with him, and this time wasn’t the exception.
Once in the cinema, you two lined up to buy tickets for the movie and you still didn’t decide which one you would watch, but you made the decision for the two of you once you saw how excited Josh looked at a big poster of a zombie movie. He bought the tickets and you bought the popcorn and the drinks. It wasn’t easy but you ended up convincing him to do so.
During the movie, he tried to grab your hand, but every time you pretended not to notice. He didn’t try many times though, he was too invested on the movie to worry about that.
That spark you were so convinced was there and was just taking its time, wasn’t making its appearance. What was wrong with you? You wanted this. You accepted his invitation because you didn’t want to miss this “open door.”
But you didn’t want to be with Josh. As hard as it was for you to realize it, you didn’t like him.
You were still after your neighbor next door, who couldn’t care less about you.
I just need time. This was too soon.
When the movie was over, you went to a diner close the place just like you agreed before.
Still, no spark. Or butterflies. Or flushed cheeks.
Just nothing.
Until you were on your way home, and you saw some kids in front of a club, with some instruments and a man practically yelling at them.
“Josh- wait. Josh! We need to stop. Stop!”
Josh did so, a couple of stores away.
“What, what?! You okay?” He asked looking at you with a frown.
“Yes, yes it’s- There. It’s Luke’s band.”
You two looked behind you, and you could see them. Not clearly, but you were sure those were them.
And Josh seemed to think so too.
“No way...” He said, his eyes wide open. And then, rapidly pointed. “Luke, it’s Luke!”
“Where?!” You desperately looked but for you, the image was blurry.
“There!”
Since you still couldn’t see him, you got out of the car to get a better view.
It was definitely them.
Reggie and, who you assume was Alex, were talking with the man you saw befoe and it did not seem like a nice conversation. Reggie was hiding behind Alex and he seemed to be the one trying to control the situation.
And you only could see his back, but it was definitely Luke the one saving the instruments in the back of their truck, next to Bobby.
“It’s them.” You confirmed, but you couldn’t move. You couldn’t bring yourself up to do anything in that moment.
“What should we do?”
And then you realized. Reggie and Bobby knew you. They knew who you were. If they saw you, they would take Luke away again.
You couldn’t allow that to happen.
“Come on.” You motioned Josh to get in the car again.
“Should we call the police? Or the Pattersons? Maybe-.”
“No, no. None of that. We’re gonna follow them.”
“What?!”
“We need to know where they’re hiding Luke.”
“How are you so sure where they’re going?”
“I am not. But we have nothing to lose.”
You waited until the guys saved one last piece of a drum set, got in the car and started driving away, to follow them.
“Be subtle. And careful.” You said.
Your heart was racing. Sadly (or not), the reason wasn’t Josh.
You tried to follow them not exactly behind, but trying to stay at least a car away from them all the time.
Five minutes later, they stopped at a fast food place, in where they got in, but you decided to stay in the car.
Josh parked the car across the street.
“Max did say everyday with you is a new adventure.” He said. “But I didn’t know he meant literally.”
You removed your sight from the restaurant and looked at him.
You smiled slightly. “Sorry for dragging you with me.”
“Oh, no worries.” He waved it off. “Max warned me.”
“He warned you?” You raised an eyebrow. You didn’t know if you should be offended.
He then noticed the way he said it and you saw the panic on his face. “I didn’t mean it like that! I promise it sounded better in my head.”
You laughed. “It’s okay. I get it.”
“Yeah, um... what should we do now though? With Luke I mean.”
“I was thinking, um...” You searched through your purse. You had enough money. “Maybe we could... follow them? If it’s okay with you. I can give you money for gas, and all. It is my fault you’re here with me now, after all.”
“Forget that.” He shook his head. “This is big. We could maybe get Luke back to his family. You don’t have to give me anything. It’s all for the Pattersons.”
You smiled and nodded. But mentally decided that you would hide the money in the pocket of his jacket later.
“And also... Max told me about what you two have been doing the past week. So I know this is important to you, too. And if there’s anything I can do to help, then I’ll do it.”
You rested your hand on his for a moment. “Thank you. Really. I promise I’ll make it up to you.”
The two of you killed time by playing with some Uno cards Josh had saved in his car, and an hour or so later, Josh saw the guys getting out of the restaurant.
“They’re leaving.” He warned you, and started the car as they drove away.
Again, you followed them cautiously for about twenty minutes. They stopped twice at two different houses (where Reggie and Alex, respectively, stayed) before finally getting into another neighborhood where the two guys left parked in front of a beautiful house. Bobby’s house, you assumed.
“So that’s where he stayed the whole time.” You whispered to yourself.
You two kept driving up until two or three houses away and parked in front of a house that seemed empty.
“I can’t believe it.” You said, giggling excited. But you erased your big smile once you looked around you. You had no clue where you were. You got out of the car with Josh.
“Do you... um... happen to know where we are?”
“Honestly? No.”
You started biting your thumbnail. You checked the time. It was nine thirty. You were supposed to be back home at ten.
“Shoot.” You said. “Okay, we know where they are. Do you have a pen or something?”
“Sure.”
He took a pen from some place in his car and gave it to you. Josh walked beside you as you headed from corner to corner and then stopped in front of Bobby’s house. You wrote the street names down in your wrist, not forgetting about the house number.
“Cool, cool.” You nodded. “We have something. And he seems to be safe. I guess I just can come back tomorrow.”
“I was hoping you say that.” He chuckled relieved. “I really didn’t think it would be a good idea to knock now.”
“Yeah...”
You stood in front of the house in silence for a minute.
“Josh?”
“Yeah?”
“We found Luke.”
You two turned your heads to see at each other and then cheered and jumped.
“Shh! Wait! They could hear us.”
“Right, right.” He stopped himself too.
And then, you two silently celebrated.
When you finished, you noticed you were grabbing each other’s hands.
You saw him blushing, and before this could go any further, you smiled at him gently and let go of his hands.
“Let’s go.” You said.
“How do you think they’re managing though? You know, Luke hiding there. And I don’t know his friends’ parents... or his friend himself, but I don’t think they would allow to hide someone in their house who’s been practically reported as missing. There are literally posters of him everywhere.” Josh said once you were (this time for real) on your way home.
“I know. At least I hope they don’t know. It would be cruel of them. Mrs. Patterson is better now, but she hasn’t been having a great time.”
He nodded.
“It’s really sweet of you. What you’ve been doing for her. And for Mr. Patterson.”
“I just... I think I just can’t see her like that. And she regrets everything she did wrong with Luke. She just wants another chance to fix things.”
“You have a great heart.” He said, and you smiled for the hundredth time that night.
“Thank you.” You tilted your head. “You too. You came all the way here with me to save Luke. I think that’s something that qualifies you as a good person, too.”
“Thank you.” He doffed an imaginary hat at you, and you chuckled.
He parked in front of your house.
“This night was... full of unexpected events.” Josh said and you agreed with a smile.
“I’m sorry, again. For dragging you with me.”
“And, again. It’s okay. It was fun. Way more fun than what I had in mind for this date.”
You held up a gasp. He said it. It was a date.
You decided to ignored it. “I had fun too.”
“I just... I had something in mind. And I realized that maybe we... don’t share the same feelings? I sound so stupid, I’m sorry. I just...” He sighed. “I like you, Y/N. I really do. But I notice you don’t feel the same.”
“I am... truly sorry about that, Josh.” You looked down for a second. “I really tried though, you know? You’re a really good guy.”
You grabbed his hand and squeezed it.
“I’m just... still fighting with this old... thing I had for a boy. But please don’t get mad at me. I love hanging out with you. You just make me laugh a lot and...it’s just so fun to be with you. You’re a great friend and I really don’t want to lose you.”
He shook his head with a little smile. “You shouldn’t worry about that. You could never lose me.”
You smiled.
“Friends?” You asked and showed him your fist.
“Friends.” He bumped it and you hugged him.
“Thank you for one of the greatest nights ever.” You whispered.
As soon as you stepped on your living room, your family assault you with a bunch of questions. You impatiently responded to all of them, to then explain that you and Josh were just friends. You just wanted to go to Tamra’s room and call Max, but your sister didn’t let you do so until you promised you were gonna give her details later.
Max also celebrated the new information you got when you called him and the both of you agreed on going the next day and...
Well, you didn’t know what to do exactly. But you would have that planned later.
You couldn’t believe it. You were so happy you couldn’t even remember why did you quit the investigation. You just needed a little break. It was too much for you and it wasn’t easy.
But you were back.

Missing (6/?)
Tumblr media
Summary: Your next door neighbor, Luke Patterson (a.k.a. your longtime crush) has gone missing, and you think you could help finding him.
Word count: 2.8k
Warnings: none!
Author’s note: Hi! So I’m back, and I’ve had a big writer’s block, so that’s why this part is kind of 💩. Anyways, hope you still enjoy!
Part 7
Sunday went fine.
You and your family went to church, you had lunch back at your house and then even watched a movie together, before getting everything ready for your sister’s boyfriend’s visit. He came and charmed your parents and yourself. He was very nice and polite. You couldn’t help but be grateful for the fact that he was nice to YOU. Tamra’s other boyfriends were usually indifferent at your presence and some of them would even get bothered by you, which you always thought was ridiculous because you didn’t even talk around them, as Tamra would ask you. And most importantly, he did like dessert. You and Tamra decided to bake Torta Tres Leches (your specialty) and he loved it. And after dinner, he helped you and your sister clean the dishes.
“...We ain’t searching for tomorrow...”
Tyler sang while washing a plate, and you couldn’t hide your surprise.
“You know Sunset Curve?”
Maybe it shouldn’t surprise you that much. They had performed in several places before. Maybe it should surprise you if someone didn’t know them.
“You know them?” He asked smiling.
“The lead singer is our neighbor next door.” Tamra informed him.
“That’s awesome! Could we meet him?” He said with shiny eyes.
“Sure. If he wasn’t missing.” Tamra said, placing the dishes in their place.
“What?” He said, his eyes wide open. “Really? That’s messed up! I know them because they tried to set their stuff in front of the caffe once, a while ago, but my boss kicked them out as soon as he saw them. But they dropped a demo on the sidewalk, I think on purpose, and I took it. I’ve been listening to it nonstop ever since.”
“Would you mind borrowing it to Y/N? She’s trying to reach them to find Luke. Luke’s the lead singer.” Tamra explained.
“Sure, I can give it to you this week.” Tyler said looking at you.
“Don’t worry about it. I don’t think I’m doung that anymore.”
“What? Really?” Tamra asked you. “Why?”
“Long story.” Not really.
Your sister looked like she wanted to insist, so you spoke again.
“I’m telling you about it later.” You rolled your eyes.
Tyler and Tamra kept talking about the band and she told him about the time she saw them playing at the bookclub. You helped them finish cleaning the rest of the dishes, quietly.
“I’m heading up to my room. It was nice meeting you Tyler.” You smiled politely.
“You aren’t watching a movie with us?” He asked, and you shook your head.
“Next time, I promise.”
“Perfect. See you soon, kiddo.”
You said you wouldn’t, but once you got to your room, you couldn’t help to open your window and look at Luke’s room again. Still empty and perfectly cleaned.
What Tamra said got stuck in your head. You started the investigation just four days ago, and you were already giving up.
I wouldn’t say it’s giving up, you thought, it doesn’t make any sense to keep looking for him if he has no plans of coming back.
Maybe there was such thing as too optimistic, after all. You underestimated the situation and expected too much. You didn’t realize how real this was until now. And right then it hit you: this wasn’t a joke. Luke was missing. Kind of. And you were trying to find him?
You must’ve looked ridiculous playing the detective.
You were still starring at the other side of your window when you heard Tamra laying down on your bed, in a jump.
“You didn’t watch the movie?” You asked, finally turning your head to see her.
“No. I told him to go home. It’s pretty late already and he has to work tomorrow.” She responded, looking at the ceiling.
You left your window seat and climbed onto you bed next to her.
“He’s super cool. I like him. Mom and dad did too.”
“Yeah.” You noticed the little smile on her face. “He loved you all too. Especially you. He says you’re adorable.”
You rolled your eyes. “I’m only two years younger than you two.”
“Well, say that to him. He told me he’s taking you as his little sister. He’s an only child, by the way.”
“That sounds fun.” You joked and she hit your arm slightly. “I’m just kidding! But I always wanted a big brother, so he’s more than welcome.”
“Hey!”
“I didn’t say I want to change you for him.” You rolled your eyes. “I just want an older brother, that’s all.”
You tried to distract her for a little while, talking about Tyler, but that didn’t work for too long.
“What’s that about you quitting the investigation?” Tamra finally asked, and you sighed.
“That I’m letting the police do their work.”
“But, why?”
“It’s too much. I am just a sixteen year old.”
“You’re just months away from being seventeen.”
“Does that change anything?”
She looked at you carefully. “What happened?”
You shook your head before talking.
“Every time I think or feel I’m closer to find him, turns out I’m only further. Did you know this isn’t a movie? Where everything just comes in hand? Because apparently, I didn’t. And now I’m here.”
Tamra starred at you for a minute. “It’s weird seeing you giving up. You never give up. And you’re always so positive. It makes me crazy sometimes but it’s one of things I appreciate about you.”
It’s not giving up, you wanted to say, but maybe it was.
“But I guess you’re right. You are just a sixteen-almost-seventeen year old. How much could you do?”
She said it on purpose and you knew it. She wanted to get in your head. She just didn’t know she already did.
You just stayed silent.
You did feel bad. You tried not to think too much about it, but you did. You didn’t like the way you just... well, gave up. The way you were so close, and still didn’t get Luke. But it happened. And this wasn’t a game. It was real life.
“Are we not gonna talk about the cute guy that brought you home yesterday?”
Your thoughts fade away when Tamra spoke again after a while.
“Josh?”
“That’s his name? I didn’t remember. But, yeah, him I guess.”
“He asked me out. And I said yes.”
“Really?” She raised an eyebrow at you. “So you’re planning on dating him or...?”
“I don’t know. Maybe?”
“Maybe is not an answer.”
“Um, yes it is. As in, maybe I will date him. Maybe I will not.”
“The fact that you’re hesitating is a bad sign.”
“I’m just-” You sat in your place. “-not sure. What if I waste this opportunity? I mean, come on. Josh is cute. Really cute. He plays football, likes to read, he’s really sweet and he’s fun to be with. But...”
“He’s not Luke.”
“Yeah, he’s not... wait.” Your heart sank. “What do you mean?!”
Tamra chuckled. “You thought I didn’t notice? You are really obvious.”
“But- how-? What-?” You shook your head, confused.
“I noticed ever since we moved. You were all heart-eyed for him the day him and his family came with those delicious muffins.”
Somehow, you felt a bit relieved. At least she didn’t know you’ve been sort of spying on him.
“Every time he says hi to you, you have a dumb smile on your face. I’d be surprised if he doesn’t know you like him.”
You blushed. You really hoped Tamra was just exaggerating like she usually does.
“I’m surprised you never talked to him, though.” She added.
You just shrugged and didn’t say anything.
“So?!” Tamra asked. “You’re not gonna give me any details?”
“There’s not much to say.” You said. “I have a crush on him even though I don’t actually know him.”
“But you could get to know him. Once he’s back.”
You held back a laugh. If he wants to come back, you couldn’t help thinking.
“If you like him, you should go for it. I mean, I don’t see why not.”
“I don’t know. He makes me feel weird.”
“In a good or bad way?”
“Good way, I guess. But I don’t know how to act about it, you know? I’ve never actually dated anyone. I’ve been living out of crushes my whole life.”
“That’s because you never make time to date anyone.”
“I don’t have, the time to do so. I’m always either at school or dance. And when I’m not, I’m here practicing or doing homework. That’s why I usually bring my friends here instead of actually going out. Yesterday was the first time I went out in a month... What I’m trying to say is that dating is not a priority of mine. I like Luke, but nothing ever happens with him. If things were supposed to happen, they should’ve happened already.”
“But that’s because you don’t make a move.”
“Why can’t he make the first move?”
“Nobody said he can’t. He’s just not doing anything, so maybe you should do it first.”
“Don’t you think that the reason he doesn’t make any moves could be because he’s not interested in me?”
“Do you know that for sure?”
“No, but-“
“Then you will never know.” She sat and faced you. “You’re wasting your time.”
You wanted to disagree, but it was true. Luke wasn’t your first crush, but he was the first boy you’ve ever considered the idea of dating. Or at least you fantasized with that image in your head.
“I’m just saying.” She lifted herself up from your bed and walked to the door. “Didn’t you regret it when you found out he ran away? You’ll have a second chance, but it’s up to you, if you take it or not.”
When Tamra left, you tried to ignore everything she said, because it really was nothing you haven’t thought about already.
A second chance.
That reminded you of the promise you made to Mrs. Patterson.
You told her you would visit her the next day after school, when you found her at church. Mr. Patterson even thanked you personally for doing so, and told him she looked better ever since your first visit. But did you have the heart to tell her you’re not searching for Luke anymore? You weren’t even sure if she actually believed you could find him, but it still didn’t seem easy to tell her that.
“Hey.” Max sat next to you in your backyard, later that night.
It was ten thirty, or maybe eleven when you called him, and asked if he could come over.
“Hey. Thank you for coming.”
“Of course.” He said, nudging his elbow against your arm, slightly.
You gave him a smile.
“Sorry for not calling today.” He said and you frowned.
“Why?”
Max’s cheeks went red. “Uh- I don’t know, I just, um-.”
You chuckled. “I’m just kidding. It felt weird for me too. To not talk to you today, I mean.”
He relaxed his face. “Yeah, yeah. I didn’t know if you felt that too.”
“I do. You’re kind of my best friend now.”
He looked surprised to your eyes. Maybe even excited.
“I thought you already had a best friend.”
“Let me guess. You assumed, I had a best friend?” You teased.
He giggled. “Yeah. Exactly.”
“Well, you were wrong.”
You haven’t had a best friend since elementary school. Your old best friend, Ana, moved to another city the year you started middle school, and although you were pretty sociable, you never really found a friendship like hers again. It was tough for you, but you managed to keep going. It wasn’t like you didn’t have friends. But of course, you still felt the need of a solid friendship.
“We’ve known each other for... three months?”
“Two.”
“Just two? Wow.” He shook his head. “It feels like more. We’ve known each other for two months, and I don’t think we’ve talked as much as these last few days. I don’t think I’ve trusted anyone this fast before.”
You chuckled. “Me neither. It feels weird.”
“Yeah. And nice.”
“Yeah.” You looked at him. “I didn’t hear you say it, though.”
He didn’t have to ask to know what you meant.
“Come on. Say it.” You insisted.
“You’re my best friend too.” He rolled his eyes, smiling.
“I thought you already had a best friend.” You joked. But you actually meant it. Unlike you, he had Ian.
For your surprise, he frowned. “Who?”
You looked at him kind of annoyed. “Ian? When I asked you if you had friends, at the library, you said you had Ian.”
“I never said he was my best friend.” He then smiled. “See? You assumed.”
“I’m spending too much time with you.”
He laughed. “Definitely... but, no, Ian isn’t my best friend. We do see each other often, because our parents are close friends. And there’s school too. But we don’t like... I don’t know. Have deep talks? Or anything. What do best friends even do together?”
You laughed.
“We don’t even hang out together at school.” He continued. “He has his own friends.”
“But he went with you to ask more about Luke, the other day.”
“Well, yeah, we trust each other enough to ask favors. That doesn’t mean we’re close.”
You stayed silent, processing everything.
“It makes me feel bad that you don’t know what best friends do.” You then said.
“Thanks?”
“First of all, best friends tell each other everything.”
“Okay...” He nodded, like taking a mental note.
“I’ll go first.” You said. “I’m going out with Josh next Saturday.”
“You what?!”
“Yeah.” You said indifferent. “He kind of asked me out yesterday and I said yes.”
“I’m honestly surprised. I didn’t think he was your type.”
“Who did you think was my type?”
“Well, I don’t know...” He looked up, thinking. “I kind of see you with someone like Luke.”
“Really?” You said. Not really believing it. He had to be teasing. Maybe he knew you have a crush on him too.
“Yeah... actually, yes. It makes sense the more I think about it.”
You shook your head and almost decided to not confront him. But you just said best friends tell each other everything.
“You can say it now.”
“Say what?”
“That you know I like Luke. And tell me I’ve wasted my time, that I should’ve done something before and definitely talk to him once he’s back.”
“Wow, hold on a second.” He frowned and shook his head repeatedly. “You like Luke?!”
“Either you’re too naive or my sister was just exaggerating when she said I was being obvious about my feelings.”
“Honestly? If someone else told me, I wouldn’t have believed it. Man.” He scoffed, amused. “It really is hard to tell when you like someone. You’re just... all yourself with everyone. You don’t give special treats. Maybe Tamra could tell because she knows you better than anyone.”
You considered his theory. Maybe he was right.
“What I said about... about me seeing you with someone like Luke it’s true, though. I just haven’t thought about it until now.”
He laughed and you laughed along with him.
You enjoyed each other’s company in silence for a minute before you spoke again.
“I saw Reggie and Bobby yesterday. At the party.”
And you told him what happened. Maybe it wasn’t much of a surprise, but he was mad.
“Why didn’t you tell me?! I could’ve helped somehow!”
“Max, you were with Aria. I wasn’t going to interrupt.”
“You weren’t going to-.” He ran a hand though his hair, frustrated. “I can’t believe you right now! This was important! I mean, I would’ve get it if you interrupted me for some other stupid reason but this was about Luke! We could’ve found him, we-“
“Did you not just hear me? They wouldn’t say anything, just like you said before.”
“I’ll talk to them. Tomorrow at school-.”
“It wouldn’t make sense. Bobby said Luke needed some time. We don’t know how much time is that but we do know that he’s not planning on coming back soon.”
“But Mrs. Patterson...”
“I told you I sent him a message. With a little bit about everything maybe. Including his family.”
“Yeah, but he’ll think Amy sent him the message.”
“Does it even matter?”
“Well, I thought it would now that I know you like him.”
“The correct answer is, no. It doesn’t matter. The point is for him to know his family is okay. My feelings are not a part of this. Hopefully he’ll talk about it with his pillow and come back sooner than expected. For his parents.”
“...So, is it over? It’s done?”
You knew he meant the investigation, and you didn’t respond right away, trying to come up with something. You found yourself worried he would get mad again. Or reproach you like Tamra did.
“I think... at least for now, yeah. We’re done with that. We got enough information to know there’s really not much we could do.”
Another silence grew between you two.
“Come on.” You said after a while. “Tell me about Aria. How are things going with her?”
He smiled, like he was waiting for you to say that.
Max stayed until the clock ticked 12:48 and he only left because he remembered finals at his school started the next day. That was the reason he didn’t call you the whole day, because he was studying. That made you remember that finals at your own school started the next week. Exams at your dance studio did too.
But you would stress about that later.
Right now, you had a beautiful view above you, and you were willing to enjoy it as long as you could.

Summary: Your next door neighbor, Luke Patterson (a.k.a. your longtime crush) has gone missing, and you think you could help finding him.
Word count: 2.7k
Warnings: none!
Part 6
“I can’t believe you’re here!” You said to Max once he approached to you.
The whole neighborhood and, other kids you assumed were Amy’s friends, were at her party. The place was packed with teenagers.
“Yeah, I’m regretting it.”
“This is a POOL party. You can’t regret coming to a pool party.”
“I just did.”
“Don’t be ridiculous- Hey Josh! Come on.” You grabbed Max’s arm and took him with you to were your neighbor was.
“Hey guys.” He smiled at you two. “It’s nice to see some familiar faces. I lost Victor somewhere around here.”
You chuckled.
“Max, I can’t believe you’re here.” Josh looked at your friend.
“Yeah, Y/N convinced me to.”
“Then I should thank you, dear Y/N. I’m glad that you were able to take Max out of his room. We barely see him anymore.” Josh hit Max in the arm, slightly. “We’re going to meet at Matt’s this week. Wanna come along?”
“I-.”
“He would love that.” You said to Josh, before Max could say no. He looked at you with wide eyes.
“Great! I’ll call you one of these days to coordinate better.” Josh smiled. “Oh, cool necklace, by the way.”
He pointed to the guitar pick hanging around your neck with a piece of thread. You thanked God he didn’t ask if it was yours. Maybe he just related it to Tamra, who did play the guitar.
“Thanks.” You said.
Victor found his way back to the three of you, and he came with a few other kids from the block, and after chatting for a little bit, you all agreed on finally getting into the pool.
You took your dress off, since you had your swimsuit under it, just like the other girls. You saved the dress on your bag, left on a chair near the pool, and then, you noticed how Max was just staring froze at some point of the pool.
You frowned and approached to him. “Hey, you okay?”
You tried to locate what was he looking at, but you couldn’t, so you spoke again. “What? What is it?”
“Max, come on!” Aria called him from the pool.
You then noticed: he was looking at her.
“Coming!” He said, laughing nervously.
“You like Aria?!”
“Shh! Shut up!”
“You like her.” You said lower this time and smiling. “I didn’t know you liked girls.”
“Honesty is something I really appreciate, but there are times where you should just stay quiet, you know?.” Max said, clearly frustrated.
You giggled. “Sorry. I’m just so excited! But, wait, do you guys even talk? Well, I suppose you do, otherwise she wouldn’t have called you.”
“Well, she laughs at my jokes. And I laugh at hers, when we’re talking in a group but... we’ve never shared a conversation just the two of us.”
“That could change today! Go, talk to her!”
“What part of “I’m not exactly sociable” did you not understand?”
“Max, you two grew up together. There’s nothing you should be afraid of. What could go wrong? Go!”
“Oh my gosh! You’re so annoying. I shouldn’t have told you anything... wait, I actually didn’t!”
You laughed. “You could never hide anything from me. Now go!”
With an indecisive look, he carefully got into the pool and approached to Aria.
You clapped, excited, and then got in too. Amy also joined you a while later. Some played and other decided to just relax. It was when you were playing Marco-Polo when you noticed him and your heart skipped a beat.
It was Reggie.
You couldn’t tell for sure, but judging by the picture you’ve analyzed for a long time the night before, it was him. And Bobby was next to him.
“Marco!” You heard Liz say, and you got out of the pool, as fast and carefully as you could.
“Polo!”
“Y/N! Where are you going?” Josh asked you.
“I’ll be back. Just keep playing.” You said, and you looked for Max among all the people in the pool.
You then found him, but he was sitting on the grass, with Aria. They were talking and he seemed so comfortable and himself, that you didn’t have the heart to interrupt.
You put a towel on you, put on your flip flops, and then headed to where you could see the guys were standing and talking to each other.
“Excuse me... Excuse me.” You pushed slightly to the crowd until you got close to where Reggie and Bobby were.
And you froze. It had to be them, but why?
Wasn’t Alex the one who kind of knew Amy?
You didn’t have anything planned and you weren’t even sure if those were Luke’s bandmates.
What should you do?
Impulsively, you walked to them.
“Hey.” You said, ignoring the adrenaline you were feeling along with your racing heart.
“Hey! Are you Amy?” The guy you recognized as Reggie said.
Before you could say anything else, Bobby spoke.
“Alex wasn’t able to come, and we thought that maybe we could come in his place?”
“Except that Alex was just one guy, and you can see two here.”
“Shut up.” Bobby hissed at Reggie and he rose his hands up.
“Um, can I know your names?” You played along.
“I’m Bobby, and this is Reggie.”
Think of something, come on, you thought. You didn’t know how could you take information out of them. But before you could ask them something else, Reggie seemed to notice something on you.
“Do I know you from somewhere?” He said, tilting his head. “I think I’ve seen you before.”
You frowned. You’ve obviously seen him before, and not even in person, but where could he possibly have seen you?
Right when you were about to respond, Bobby seemed to notice something on you, too.
“Where did you get that?” He asked, pointing at the guitar pick.
You tried to act natural, despite the fact that you’re heart started racing faster than before.
“My sister plays the guitar-.”
“No, that’s- That’s Luke’s.” Bobby said to Reggie in a lower voice, who seemed to be confused at the situation. “We need to go.”
“Wait! You know Luke? You know where he is?” You desperately asked, not too loud so people couldn’t hear you.
“Sorry. We have to go.” Reggie said, and he really seemed to be sorry.
“I told you coming here was a bad idea.”
“No you didn’t!”
“No, wait, please!” You followed them outside Amy’s house. “I just-! Is he okay? Where is he?”
“Sorry, um, Amy? We can’t tell you anything and we’d appreciate it if you didn’t say anything about this to anyone either.” Bobby said, opening the door to the driver’s side.
“So you’re admitting you know where Luke is?” You asked.
“I didn’t admit anything. Come on Reggie.”
The so-called seemed extremely nervous, and just obeyed, getting into the car.
You rapidly came up with something.
“How do you know I’ll keep quiet? How do you know I won’t go to the police, who’s looking for Luke now?”
You weren’t actually sure of that, but the words came out of your mouth before you could stop them. Even if it was true, you didn’t have enough information to do so.
But they didn’t look like they thought too much about what you said. Bobby froze right when he was about to get in the car and Reggie rolled his window down.
“I don’t wanna go to jail! Please don’t call the police, we-!”
“Reggie!” Bobby stopped him. “Just-. Luke is fine. He just needs some time, okay?”
“Can I go with you?” You dared to ask.
“No that’s... not an option.” Bobby shook his head.
“Maybe we could send him a message from you.” Reggie suggested, but Bobby looked like he didn’t like the idea. And before he could say anything, you rushed to talk.
“Please tell him that his family is fine. His mom misses him. Everyone here does. And just... please tell him I hope... that if he ever decides to come back... I hope we can get to meet each other better.”
“Aw...” Reggie pouted. “You’re gonna make me cry!”
“We’ll tell him.” Bobby nodded and rolled his eyes at his friend.
“Bye! It was nice meeting you! I still think you look familiar!” Reggie said when Bobby was already driving away.
You waved at him, with a sad smile. Reggie was really nice.
You sat on the sidewalk and hugged your knees. You really thought for a moment that you would see Luke. That you would bring him back home, safe. At least he would get a message from you. Maybe, somehow, you could get a reply.
And that’s when you realized: Reggie and Bobby thought you were Amy. They would tell Luke that Amy sent him the message.
“Come on!” You said out loud.
Why was this so hard?
Every time you thought you got to something, you would then realize you forgot something else, or your ideas weren’t good, or your plans would just not work out...
You found yourself crying out of frustration.
Luke did ran away for a reason. Was he even planning on coming back? He didn’t want to be found, that was obvious. Max said it before.
Why were you even still doing this then?
And what if you find him? What would you do anyways? You didn’t have that planned.
Rule number four, somewhere deep in your mind echoed.
But if Luke doesn’t want to come back, then the rule didn’t have any value. So what was the point?
Then, you remembered Mrs. Patterson’s tired face. The way she expressed her repentance...
You went back in, as fast as you could, to head into a bathroom. And only decided to come out once you didn’t look like a mess anymore.
“Y/N! I’ve been looking for you everywhere!” Max said when you were getting out of the bathroom.
“Well, I’m her now.”
Should you tell him? Should you tell Max what just happened? What if he got mad? You didn’t exactly know what should he get mad about, but still. You didn’t want to ruin what it seemed to be one of the best days of his life in a long time.
Okay, maybe you were exaggerating.
“But is everything okay? Are you okay?”
“Yes, Max, don’t worry. I’m okay. Where’s Aria?”
“She’s in the pool. I told her to wait for me for a second... that was twenty minutes ago.”
“That isn’t a second.” You teased and he rolled his eyes.
“I’m gonna ignore you said that. Come on, let’s go back with the rest. They were saying something about a movie before I left.”
“Actually I think I’m gonna go home? I’m kind of tired.”
Max frowned. “You? You’re never tired.”
You shook your head. “Don’t be ridiculous.”
“But it’s super early! How long have you been here? Like, what, one hour and a half?” He noticed you were about to make another excuse so he rapidly spoke again. “You made me come here. You said you were dragging me with you everywhere. If you’re going home, I’m going too.”
“We both know that’s not exactly what I meant. And you don’t wanna leave yet. I do.”
“When did the roles change, huh?” Max teased. “Come on, Y/N. Just stay for a bit more. We live a block away. We’ll be back home super fast after the movie’s over. And you said that if there weren’t any news about Luke, than the party could still be good to distract ourselves.”
You saw how excited and happy he was, which helped you make your final decision: you were definitely not telling him about the incident right now.
You stared at him for a second and then sighed.
Maybe he was right. If you did go to your house, you would only keep thinking and that would make you feel worse. You indeed needed some distraction.
“Okay, let’s go.” You walked past him and he followed you with a big smile.
It wasn’t until most of the people left, that you all seated in front of the tv and watched a movie. You sat next to Amy, who linked your arms together and wouldn’t shut up for a minute. She had something to say for every single scene. But you weren’t listening. Or even paying attention to the movie.
You looked down, discretely. Aria and Max were seated together on the floor, and you noticed how their hands were placed just centimeters away from touching.
You smiled and looked back to the tv. That was their moment. Not something you should be seeing.
Amy’s voice whispering to you something about how the girl’s shorts were awful started to fade in the background, and you slowly let your eyes shut.
“So did you like the movie?”
You rolled your eyes but giggled. “Shut up.”
Josh was the one who woke you up after the movie ended. It was six, or maybe seven forty when he did so, and he told you Max already left with Aria and that he was taking her home.
You couldn’t help to feel disappointed. You were hoping you could get some time alone with Max just so you could tell him what happened before with Bobby and Reggie. Josh said he would take you home, and you accepted his company. His house was just a few houses away from yours, after all.
You shifted your bag from one shoulder to another, since it felt kind of heavy, and Josh noticed.
“Hey, let me take that for you.”
“It’s really not- Okay.”
He took the bag out of your shoulder before you could even protest.
“Thank you.” You added.
“Today was pretty fun.” He said after a pause. “It’s been like a month since the last time we all hung out together.”
“I know. School’s been pretty heavy for everyone. We are entering finals season.”
“Yeah. At least it’s getting over. At least for some months.”
“Yeah...”
“It’s crazy what happened with Luke, right?”
You nodded. “It is.”
“Do you think he is okay?”
“Yes.” You said convinced, and you knew it was true. You confirmed it that afternoon. But you didn’t say that to Josh. You just repeated Mrs. Patterson’s words. “He’s smart. He’s probably somewhere safe. Like a friend’s house.”
“I guess. Did you ever talk to him?”
“Not really. You?”
“Kind of. We grew up together but once we got to high school he wouldn’t hang out with us anymore... I think ever since he started his band, actually.”
“Well, a band takes a lot of responsibility.” You said, without actually knowing that for sure.
“Yeah.” For a moment, he seemed to be debating something with himself, until he finally spoke, when you were already arriving at your house.
“I thought you guys were dating.”
“What?”
“You and Max. I saw you hanging out together a lot lately.”
“Oh.” You shook your head. “No, no. We’re just friends.”
You stopped and faced him on your sidewalk.
“Yeah I noticed today... Him and Aria seem to have something going on.”
“Yeah. I’m really happy for them.” You smiled, sincerely.
“I actually, um... felt kind of relieved? When I realized that you two aren’t dating and now you confirmed it, so... yeah. I’m really glad...” He rambled, and you just stared at him.
“Why?” You asked, and you wished he didn’t ask. And that he didn’t say it.
But he did.
“Because, I’ve been meaning... for a while, to ask you something. Would you, um... like to go out, some time?”
You got ready to give your usual response. I like someone else. But you stopped yourself.
How many times since you moved, since you noticed Luke, did you reject guys asking you out?
Always with the stupid hope that Luke would one day wake up and think that you were the one. That you were the one for him.
But he never did. And now, he had other plans. He was somewhere else, maybe far away from you, and he didn’t want to come back.
And you were tired. Tired of that fantasy. A fantasy that only you were living, that only you created in your head.
If you were mad at someone, it was yourself. For never trying. For never taking any of the opportunities you had to talk to him.
And this was a clearly a new opportunity. An opportunity to move on.
“I would... like that. Yeah.” You nodded, giving him a little smile.

Missing (4/?)
Tumblr media
Summary: Your next door neighbor, Luke Patterson (a.k.a. your longtime crush) has gone missing, and you think you could help finding him.
Word count: 2.3k
Warnings: None!
Part 5
As soon as you both finished eating, she took you to his room.
It felt weird to you to see the rest of the room you couldn’t visualize from your window. You could finally see some furniture and more posters.
“I promise I won’t go off limits, Mrs. Patterson.”
“Oh, you don’t have to worry. As I said, this is a pretty special situation. Just call me if you need anything.”
That took you off guard. You didn’t actually think she would leave you by yourself.
“Thank you, again.” You said before she left.
You looked around for a moment, and giggled.
You couldn’t believe you were there. You made it.
You looked at your window room from there, and couldn’t help but think that just a few hours ago, you were there trying to figure out how to get to Luke’s room. Max would not believe this.
You started going through some notebooks found on a desk. Maybe one of those had some information about the band. But you didn’t find anything relevant. If there was something, you couldn’t really tell. He had horrible handwriting. You did notice signatures from the other band members. Mostly Alex and Reggie’s, but nothing else.
You moved on to check the desk drawers. You found a polaroid picture. He was there, with three other boys.
You opened your eyes wide. The band. They had to be the rest of the band. Of course, you didn’t know for sure, but you had a good feeling. You grabbed the picture. You would ask Mrs. Patterson if you could take it with you.
You then stood in front of his closet, thinking whether or not to go through it too. You decided to open it and give it a quick glance. Not touching anything, just looking at it.
And so you did.
You opened it and noticed that it was practically empty. A couple of jackets were hanging inside and a single flannel shirt. But you thought it was impossible for him to take every piece of clothing he owned. If he ran away on his bike, as his mom told yours, than he must’ve taken a simple backpack with him. Something easy to carry.
Just to take away the doubt, you checked the drawers and indeed, there were several shirts and pants in there, perfectly folded. You closed those and finally went up to that one poster you were so familiar with at this point. But there really wasn’t any more information besides the band’s name.
You then checked his night stand and, besides a lamp, the only thing that you found was a guitar pick. It was white, and it had the letters SC written on black. You took it and then, giving the room a last look, you left to meet Mrs. Patterson in the living room. You showed her the polaroid you found and told her that you suspected they could be Luke’s bandmates. You asked if you could take it and she said yes.
“I also found this guitar pick? I think he might’ve forgotten when he... left. I just thought that maybe I could take it with me just so when I find him I can give it back.”
You noticed the conviction in your voice, and by the sweet smile Mrs. Patterson gave you, you could tell she did too.
“Of course. Take it.”
“Thank you.”
Before leaving, you and Emily ate a couple of the cookies she baked while you were up in Luke’s room.
“Take care.” You said to her on the door, when she gave you a hug.
“You too, sweetie.”
“I promise to come visit you more often.”
“I’ll be waiting for you. I repeat, you’re always welcome.”
“Thank you.”
“Thank you, too.” You both released from the hug and you were already walking away when she called you again.
“Y/N?”
“Yeah?” You turned to see her.
“You’re a really nice girl. I think you and Luke would get along perfectly.”
Tamra got home first, as usual, and she parked her car in the garage. As you thought she would. Which was the reason that made you leave her a note on the fridge. You decided to wait for Max in front of his house, on his steps.
His mom, Mrs. Miers, invited you to come inside but you told her you would just wait for Max there. She tried to convince you otherwise but you insisted, so she asked you to at least accept a glass of lemonade.
You emptied the glass just when Max was arriving.
“Hey! How did it go?” You rapidly got up on your feet and walked to him.
“Well, hello, I’m fine, thanks.” He rolled his eyes.
“Hi. So?!”
He sighed. “I did it. I talked to people... kind of.”
“What do you mean kind of?”
“Well... I asked my friend Ian to do the talking. I went with him, but he was the one doing the questions.”
“But you got information?”
“Yes- Ow!“
You squealed and hugged him, just like you did that morning.
“Hey, calm down, it’s nothing much, really...”
“It doesn’t matter. You got something, I’m so proud of you!”
“Don’t exaggerate.” He rolled his eyes, but smiled.
“I got something too, actually.”
“Let’s go inside.”
Max guided you to his living room, inside his house.
“You go first.” He said and you obeyed, since your information wasn’t much relevant.
“So first of all, I got into Luke’s room.”
“What?! Without asking?!”
“Obviously.” You said sarcastically and rolled your eyes. “Obviously not. I had lunch with Mrs. Patterson at her house today. We were just talking and I asked her if I could go check it out and she said yes... But I didn’t get much. Just this picture... I was wondering if you recognize them.”
He took the polaroid. “Yes! They are the guys. This is Reggie, Alex and Bobby.”
After all these days, you could finally give those names some faces.
“Great! Besides that, there weren’t any other clues. So what about you? What did you find out?”
You decided to not tell him about the guitar pick. It was something you would save for yourself.
“They practice at Bobby’s garage.”
“Do you know where he lives?”
“Well... no. Look, we were trying to be subtle since Bobby, Alex and Reggie went to school today. I honestly think they might know where Luke is. But they wouldn’t say anything. Today at school they were called by the principal. We supposed it was to ask them about Luke... My point is, we tried not to ask too personal questions in case they found out what we were doing.”
You wanted to protest but of course, Max had a point. If they were covering Luke, they were going to do anything to keep his location a secret.
“But I thought you guys weren’t classmates. You and the other guys.”
“We aren’t. Ian is. I mean, Ian has french with them.”
You nodded slowly.
“Oh, we also found out Amy’s mom is friends with Alex’s mom? From some pilates class... maybe it was yoga. I don’t know.”
“Amy? Amy our neighbor? That Amy?”
Max chuckled. “Yeah. Amy Campbell. Ian was actually the one who provided me that information. He and Amy’s older brother go to karate together.”
“Tomorrow is Amy’s birthday party! Do you think... Alex might go?”
“I doubt it. As far as Ian told me, Amy and Brandon never actually got to meet Alex... You’re going to Amy’s party?”
“Yeah. I already told her I would. You?”
“I told her I wouldn’t.”
“Max!”
“What? I don’t wanna go. At parties I usually just sit all night, eat and sing if I know the songs.”
“Come on, let’s gooo.” You insisted. “This isn’t a normal party, it’s a pool party!”
“Why do you want me to go? You’ll probably just leave me on my own anyways to talk to the rest.”
You rolled your eyes. “Don’t play the victim. I’ll drag you with me everywhere okay? Come on, what if Alex shows up after all? We don’t know, this could be good! Even if nothing happens, then it could be fun to distract ourselves for a bit. Please.”
He sighed and stared at you for a second before groaning. “Fine, fine. I’ll go.”
“Yay! I promise it’ll be worth it.”
You then said goodbye and went to your house.
After saying hi to your family, you rapidly went up to your room to get ready for your dance class.
“How was everything today, honey?”
Your mom asked you, later at dinner.
“I called Mrs. Patterson a while ago and she was so happy you went. She told me you two had fun together.”
You smiled. “We did. I’m planning on visiting her more often.”
“That’s a great idea.” She smiled back.
“Do you girls have any plans this weekend?” Your dad asked.
“I actually... Wanted to ask you something.” Tamra asked, and she seemed nervous. Which was rare to see.
“Sure baby, what is it?” Your mom said.
“What do you guys think if I bring Tyler for dinner, on Sunday?”
You heard how your dad dropped his fork and knife on his plate, while your mom clapped and you looked at your sister, surprised.
“Really? Is it that official?” You asked.
“Shut up.”
Tamra never actually brought any of her boyfriends to the house, for some reason. You were the only one that met them since they usually were guys from school. One time, she even dated a guy from your dance studio, who was her age.
This time, though, you never met him. You only knew he existed because she announced it to all of you at dinner once.
“Oh, Tamra! We’re so glad to finally meet him! I am so excited! What should I cook?”
“This counts as a special occasion, so we need dessert. Does he like cheesecake?” You said, excited too.
“Are you sure this is a good idea?”
“Dad!”
“David!”
You, Tamra and your mom complained at the same time.
“I’m just saying, honey, aren’t you too young for boyfriends?”
You rolled your eyes. “Dad, she’s eighteen. Leave her alone.”
“Well, she’s still my daughter. I think I have a say on this.”
“We’re discussing this later.” Your mom stopped. She faced you. “What about you, Y/N, do you have any other plans?”
“Actually, yes. Tomorrow is Amy’s birthday party. It’s a pool party. I was wondering if I could go?”
“I don’t see why not.” She looked at your father and he nodded approvingly too.
You clapped. “Perfect! Thank you.”
Later in your room, you took the polaroid and the guitar pick and checked them carefully. You saved them in your night stand before leaving to dance.
Luke was smiling in that picture, just like in any other you had the opportunity to see at his house.
You sighed. You really hoped he was okay.
The idea of Bobby, Alex and Reggie knowing where he is, really made you hopeful.
“Hey” Someone said, entering your room.
You knew it was Tamra way before you looked up to see her. She never knocks, so it was easy to tell when it was her coming to your room.
“Hey” You smiled at her. “Do you need anything?”
“No, I just... I came to tell you what happened.”
After you came up to your room, you knew Tamra stayed longer because your dad wanted to talk to her.
She sat on your bed, next to you.
“What did dad tell you?” You asked.
“Oh, you know. He started with this big speech about growing up, and that I should be careful, and stuff like that. But then he started started being emotional and said that he was afraid of me leaving the house or change my plans for college and other stuff.”
You frowned and then giggled. “He’s so dramatic.”
“I know. I won’t throw away everything I’ve planned for years just for a boy I’ve been dating for two months.”
“Not any boy, I can see.”
She rolled her eyes but blushed. “Anyways, dad also said he was happy for me and that I would always be his baby.” She said like bragging, with a shrug.
It was your turn to roll your eyes. “Childish. Now, tell me, where is this Tyler from, anyways?”
“I met him at The Drop.”
It was a caffe near your dance studio. It had a mini library with books you could read while enjoying any kind of drink or food. You two would go there after class sometimes, or when your classes aren’t too long, she would wait for you there.
“It was a few weeks before we moved. You actually know him. He’s the barista.”
“Wait, that Tyler?! Are you serious?!”
You knew something was going on. He would always give dreamy looks to your sister and would talk different to her. You told her so, every time you noticed but she would just wave it off saying you were just imagining things.
“Why didn’t you tell me before?” You said, a little hurt.
“I don’t know. Things were different with him. I was... scared. Of you not liking him, or something.” She admitted. And you knew that was a big deal. Just by the fact that she was showing her vulnerability, (which she barely ever showed to anyone), you knew she felt something strong for this guy.
“Really?” You asked, a little confused and flattered.
“Yeah. I’m actually terrified now. For the dinner. I really want you all to like him.”
“I’m sure we will.” You assured her. “Tamra I’m really, really happy for you.”
She smiled and hugged you. Tamra was almost never affectionate either, but when she was, you really appreciate it.
She stayed a little longer with you and you two chatted for a while until she went to bed and left you alone with the polaroid and the guitar pick again.
You really hoped you could get to something this weekend.

Missing (3/?)
Tumblr media
Summary: Your next door neighbor, Luke Patterson (a.k.a. your longtime crush) has gone missing, and you think you could help finding him.
Word count: 2.9k
Warnings: None!
Author’s note: So the third part just needed to be edited and now here it is! When I said as soon as possible, I meant it lol xo
Part 4
“This better be good. I was in the middle of a game-.”
“I have news”
At last, you decided to call Max first.
“I have one of the band members’ phone number.” You added.
“What?! How?”
“My sister gave it to me. Long story. Should I call now?”
“Well, yes obviously!”
“Okay, okay I’m on it. I’ll call you later.”
You finally dialed the number and patiently waited.
“Hello?” You heard a male’s voice.
“Hello, um...” It wasn’t until that moment that you realized: you didn’t know who you were calling, exactly.
You decided to improvise.
“Is Alex home?”
“Alex?”
The confused voice made you panic.
“What about Reggie?”
The silence made you add “Bobby?”
“Sorry, wrong number.”
The man hung up before you could say anything else.
You groaned.
I’m gonna get so pissed if Tamra was playing with me, you thought, but you wanted to believe that that was not the case.
“What if Tamra wrote a wrong number?”
Max asked once you called him back and explained what happened.
“Don’t think so. She told me the guy gave it to her.”
“Maybe he wrote it wrong.”
“I don’t know.” You sighed. “I guess we’ll just call it a night. See you tomorrow.”
He said goodbye back and you hung up.
“So? How did it go?” Tamra asked from the couch, when you were heading to the kitchen.
“It was a wrong number. Were you just making fun of me?”
She scoffed. “I’m not that bored. No. That was the number he gave me. Maybe he changed it.”
“Thanks anyways.”
You went to grab a popsicle from the freezer and went to your room.
The only idea stuck on your head was to go to the Patterson’s. And you knew pretty well there wasn’t much they could give you. The other idea was to convince Max to stop being complicated and just ask people in his school about the band.
You would go for the second one. You rapidly came up with a plan, and the next morning, you were ready.
Max woke up pretty early for school because he took the school bus, around the corner.
That morning, you woke up thirty minutes earlier than usual (and before anyone else), got ready as fast as you could, and, in a blink, you were next to a sleepy Max in the bus stop.
“What the-? What are you doing here?” He asked once he saw you.
“Going to school. With you.”
“Are you asleep? You do know we don’t go to the same school, right?”
“Oh, I know.”
You faced the street in front of you, pretending to wait for the bus.
“First of all, I barely believe you will get away with getting into my school. And second of all, why would you want to go?”
“Because if you don’t wanna talk to your classmates about Luke, then I will.”
“You can’t be serious.” He said, just when the bus was turning the corner to their street.
“You better believe I am.”
The bus stopped in front of them and you decided to take a step ahead Max and get into the bus, but he stopped you on the steps.
“Y/N.” He said laughing nervously. “You can’t go to my school, that’s insane.”
“Kids, come on. I don’t have all day.” The bus driver said from his seat.
“Then talk to people! We can finish this as soon as possible if you at least try!” You talked despite the man’s warning.
“Oh my gosh! Why do you insist so much?!”
“Are you serious?! We’re talking about a missing person!”
“I’m leaving.” The bus driver said, and you took one more step before Max stopped you again.
“Fine. Fine! I’ll do it. Okay? Just, please stop this and go to YOUR school.”
You squealed and hugged him, and you finally left after thanking him.
Your heart was still racing even after you silently entered your house from the backdoor and you rested against it. You sighed, a laugh in between. You did not know what would have you done if your plan didn’t work. Maybe you were trusting Max too much. He could’ve just said he would do it for you to leave the bus.
But your optimistic self didn’t mind that thought.
You went back to your room, and as soon as you lied back down on your bed, your usual alarm went off. You stopped it. You were ready anyways, so a little bit more of sleep didn’t harm anyone.
Except yourself.
You fell asleep and you didn’t hear your parents calling you until your mom went up to wake you up.
“Y/N-.”
You snapped your eyes open.
“I’m so sorry! I’m going downstairs now, I’m all dressed, I-.”
“You’re not going. Your sister already left.”
You checked your alarm clock. It was 7:57. You always left at 7:40.
“I can’t believe her sometimes. I told her to come call you. It was weird you were still asleep.” Your mom rubbed her temples. Then, she looked back at you. “Your dad and I are going to work now. You’ll stay here, okay? And go to the Pattersons’ for lunch. I’ll call Emily.”
“Mom, I can cook for myself.” If calling Nito’s Pizzeria counted as cooking. “You don’t have to bother Mrs. Patterson.”
“You’re going.” She demanded. “I’ll see you later, okay? Take care.”
She kissed your forehead and left the room.
Well, you had a lot of free time now.
You smiled. This was good. You could continue your investigation.
You got up ready to get started but then you realized. You didn’t know what to do. You still counted on Max to get the important information. And unlike you, he did go to school. You had plenty of time before he came back.
You lied back down on your bed, looking at the ceiling.
You were going to the Pattersons’ house.
You knew you weren’t gonna get out of there with much information but, maybe there will be something...
You got up and opened your window.
Luke’s room was the same as the last time you checked it. Which was last night. Now, it was neat. You figured Mrs. Patterson must have cleaned it.
You focused on the Sunset Curve poster. Why was it so hard to find any of them? If only you could see his room a little closer, maybe you could find something there that could help you.
His room.
A smile slowly appeard on your face.
You were going to Luke’s house today. Maybe you could ask Mrs. Patterson to check his room...
You shook your head. That was something weird to ask. Even if you had good intentions. At least you had the first step done, which was going to his house.
You decided to show up earlier than expected, hoping Mrs. Patterson didn’t mind.
“Oh, hi, sweetie!” Emily said when she opened her door. She was clearly surprised.
She looked tired, but still managed to have a smile on her face.
“Good morning, Mrs. Patterson. I hope it’s okay I come earlier than my mom told you I would”
It was just 8:30. You weren’t supposed to be there until four hours later.
“Oh, no, it’s totally fine! It’s nice to have some company. Come in.” She motioned for you to get into the house and so you did.
You looked around, curious. It was a really nice household.
“Mitch goes to work early and I stay here pretty much all day until he comes back. So I’m really glad you’re here.” She smiled at you again. “I was actually now deciding what should I make for lunch. Does lasagna sound good to you?”
“Sounds perfect.” You smiled back at her. “Do you need any help with that?”
“Don’t worry, sweetheart. You make yourself comfortable. Oh, and for dessert I was thinking that maybe we could bake some cookies?”
You immediately gave her a big smile and Mrs. Patterson chuckled.
“I think I have my answer. I’ll call you to make the dough once I’m finished with lunch, okay? You can turn on the tv if you want to. I’ll be right there.” She pointed the kitchen.
You thanked her before she left.
So, you were there. You were at Luke’s house. The next step was to get into his room. You could sneak in but, would that be fair to Mrs. Patterson, who’s been super sweet to you? But how were you supposed to ask to get into her son’s room?
You bit your thumbnail.
But you were there already. You couldn’t just lose that opportunity.
You visualized some framed photos around the living room and you took one with your hands to see it closer. It was Luke, when he was a baby. You smiled and felt embarrassed for being excited about baby pictures of a boy who you barely knew.
You shook your heard. Remember rule number 1, you thought.
Still, you couldn’t help but keep watching the rest.
There weren’t many in sight. They probably kept way more in photo albums. If you didn’t know that Luke had some issues with his parents (and you didn’t until a few nights ago), you could’ve never tell there was something going on. In every single picture, Luke wore a beautiful smile. He seemed happy. And not only in the pictures.
He looked happy when he was singing, when he was playing the guitar, when he said hi to you on his way to who-knows-exactly-where...
Of course, it could be quite suspicious the fact that he wasn’t home most of the time. But still. How many times did he probably come out of his house after a fight with his mom, and still managed to pretend that anything happened?
He’s been suffering by himself.
It was then when you noticed the flyers on the sofa. A picture of Luke was plastered on it, with the word “Missing” on top of it.
Your heart skipped a beat. You forgot your mom said they were hanging flyers if Luke didn’t come back yesterday. You felt the urge to shred them and throw them away.
He will be back. You will find him.
You left the living room and made your way to the kitchen.
“Everything okay, sweetie?” Mrs. Patterson asked when she saw you. She was boiling something on the stove.
“Everything’s perfect, Mrs. Patterson. Thanks again, for letting me come.”
“Oh, it’s okay, really. You’re always welcome.” She smiled at you and went back to stirring whatever was in her cooking pot. “Your mom told me you fell asleep.”
“Yeah... I was a little extra tired today.”
She chuckled. “I understand. At least you set your own alarm and get ready by yourself. I have to fight Luke to just wake up. And don’t get me started on getting him out of bed.”
You chuckled, not adding anything else. The moment was very fragile, and you didn’t want to say anything wrong.
“You do dance, right?” She asked then.
You nodded, thinking that maybe your mom told her something about that too.
“I figured. Of course, Sandra told me something but it’s easy to tell you’re a dancer by the way you’re standing.”
You smiled shyly, knowing what she meant. You were standing in a nice third position, ironically, because dancers your age don’t even use that position.
You talked about your dance experience and after a while, you both were just talking about everything. You felt at ease with Mrs. Patterson pretty quickly. She just made it feel that way. You helped her making the lasagna, after all, and after putting it into the oven, you both started making the cookie dough.
“I usually bake with my sister. We both have a sweet tooth.” You commented, cracking two eggs into the bowl Mrs. Patterson had in front of her.
“Oh, me too. Dessert is completely mandatory in this house. A rule that I made, of course.” Mrs. Patterson said and you laughed.
“I should make a similar rule in my house. We only have dessert on birthdays or holidays.”
“I encourage you to do so.” She chuckled, mixing with a whisk the batter in her bowl.
She then asked you to hand her the vanilla and baking powder.
“You guys seem close.” She said, still mixing in her bowl. “You and Tamra.”
“Oh, yeah, I guess.” You leaned your head. “It’s just been harder to hang out ever since the start of this year. It’s her senior year.” You said, although you thought she might’ve known that already. “But I guess I get it. I’m sure she just wants to enjoy her friends before going to college. Her family will always be here but her school friends won’t. She’s going to Berkeley, by the way.”
You thought about it, but you didn’t mention how glad you were she didn’t want to leave the state. You didn’t want your parents to transform Tamra’s room on a gym (something they never actually talked about, but you saw it on a movie).
Mrs. Patterson added the flour and she let you add the chocolate chips, before mixing again.
“Sandra told me so, I’m really glad... here. You can start to shape them into little balls. I’ll grease the stray.” You obeyed and she also did her task. “How old is Tamra, by the way?”
“She’s turning nineteen in a few weeks. She failed first grade, so she’s a year behind.” You explained, as soon as you saw the confusion in Mrs. Patterson’s face.
“Really?”
“Yeah... back then they just came from Texas due to my parents’ job, so they were with lots of stuff like bringing all of their belongings, they also had to work and on top of all that, they had to take care of Tamra. They didn’t want her to grow up with a nanny, so they would take her with them everywhere. She would ditch school a lot, and therefore she didn’t have a great time at exams.” You placed several dough balls in the tray.
“I think that’s pretty sweet. There are kids that grow up with practically strangers and then go against their parents for that.”
“Mhmm.”
She took the tray and put it in the freezer.
It was 12 p.m. when you both sat on the table and had lunch.
“Your mom... told me about what you’re doing. That you’re helping to find Luke.”
Your heart raced. And you thought that maybe she noticed the panic in your eyes, because she rapidly added something else.
“I just wanted to say thank you, Y/N. Because... I know you guys weren’t close. I don’t think I ever even saw you talking but... you’re still doing this, and I can’t thank you enough. And I just wanted to say that if you need anything, don’t hesitate on calling me.”
She had tears in her eyes which immediately softened your heart, and made you tear up too.
You squeezed her hand.
You knew she said all of this for two reasons. She meant it, but she also knew you were just a sixteen year old, after all. You were aware of that too. How much could you possibly do? But you were willing to do anything. Even when the adults around you didn’t exactly believe you could.
“Just promise me you won’t forget about school or dance while you’re at it. That you will take care and will not go through this alone.”
“I promise.”
She had a doubtful look on her face for a moment, but at last, she spoke. “You know, we haven’t talked to the police yet. But I think we might soon. I just... I didn’t want to call them because I know Luke is safe. I know he’s smart enough to go somewhere he’ll be okay. But he hasn’t come back. And I just can’t help but be worried. I wanna see him. I wanna talk to him. I know he might be in a friend’s house. I suspect it might be someone from his band... Oh!” She sobbed. “I just wish I supported him more. I wish I was more interested on the people he was seeing. Maybe that way we could’ve found him already...”
You got up to hug her from behind, around the shoulders, while she stayed on her seat. “It’s not your fault, Mrs. Patterson. When he comes back, you’ll have another chance. I promise I’ll do anything I can to help you get that second chance. Maybe you won’t even need to call the police.”
“Oh, dear.” She hugged your arms. “Thank you. Thank you so much.”
You then pulled back and went to your seat.
“What a mess.” Emily chuckled, cleaning her face with a kitchen cloth. “I’m so sorry.”
“Don’t apologize. You looked like you needed it.”
She nodded. “I really did. Thank you.”
A comfortable silence grew between the two of you after that conversation, while you finished your food.
“Mrs. Patterson, actually, I was thinking on asking you something...”
“Sure, sweetheart, what is it?”
Your heart pounded against your chest again. You were doing this.
“I just wanted to know if... if I could check Luke’s room? It’s all for the investigation, I promise I’m not a creep.”
For your surprise, she chuckled, and then looked down for a second.
“Luke really didn’t like people getting into his room... but I guess this could be an exception. It is a peculiar situation, anyways.”

Missing (2/?)
Tumblr media
Summary: Your next door neighbor, Luke Patterson (a.k.a. your longtime crush) has gone missing, and you think you could help finding him.
Word count: 2.1k
Warnings: none!
Author’s Note: Hey, it’s me again! So I’m back. I noticed that I didn’t mention before that the reader is a dancer! So I hope that didn’t bother anyone. And I’m sorry there’s not much in this part, but I’ll try to upload the third part as soon as possible xo
Part 3
You came up with a few rules, if you were willing to do this. Rule #1: You would not think of Luke as the boy you have a crush on until you know for sure that he doesn’t have a girlfriend. Rule #2: You were taking Max with you wherever you needed to and whatever you needed to do. Rule #3: You would do as much as you could to find Luke. Rule #4: Find Luke.
The information Tamra gave you was enough for you to wait impatiently for school to be over the next day. The bookclub’s meetings were on Thursdays at 6:00 p.m.
Today was Thursday.
You talked to Hannah at lunch, asking her about the bookclub. She told you about the book they were reading and the social environment, but she didn’t mention the band. You didn’t make any specific questions either, since you didn’t really want to tell her what you were actually doing. Hannah also offered you to take you the library. But you politely declined. You were just taking the bus with Max. For which he complained, later on when school was over and you both were heading to the library on the bus.
“She OFFERED to take us there, in a CAR, and you said no?!”
You rolled your eyes.
You were all dressed in your dance uniform, wearing a comfortable sundress on top of it and some shoes that you randomly picked. And you had your dance bag, seated at your feet. Your dance class was at 6:30, but you weren’t worried about the time. You calculated that if the band had to set up their equipment, then they would definitely be there earlier then the rest of the bookclub members.
“First of all, she offered ME a ride. Not us. She didn’t know I had company.” You said, checking up the watch on your wrist. 5:25 p.m. You looked back at him. “And second of all, if you weren’t too afraid of driving, then maybe, we could’ve given that car of yours some use.”
Max told you that the car parked in his garage was his, and was given to him on his seventeenth birthday, months before you moved to the neighborhood. Since Max was afraid of driving, his mom was the one using the nice car.
“Uh, yeah? Why don’t you try driving then?” He said, cheeks flushed.
“I did. Several times.”
You just weren’t perfect at it yet. Not that you were desperate to drive. Your sister would always drive you wherever you needed to, so what was the rush? You didn’t need a car yet. You just couldn’t ask her to take you to the library today because she had to recover a piano lesson she missed a few days ago.
“Then why-?”
“Oh my gosh, Max, let it go. Tamra’s picking us up once we’re finished. Geez.” You said, frustrated. This guy could complain and argue for hours if he wanted to.
“Sorry.” He said rolling his eyes. “So what are we doing?”
You snapped your head at him. “Didn’t I tell you anything yet?”
“I know it has to do something with Luke, because of what you asked me last night. And that we’re going to the library... Now that I say it out loud, we’re going to that bookclub they play at, right?”
You definitely forgot to explain. Your so focused on getting started with your plan that the only words that came out of your mouth that afternoon when you called him were: “Come with me to the library.” He didn’t asked much in that moment either, so it was on both of you.
“That’s right. How could you just jump in with me without even knowing what I was dragging you to?”
“Because I was waiting for your call. You said you were gonna tell me what you were up to, so I just linked everything to that. You still didn’t explain yourself, by the way.”
So you explained to him. That you were on sort of an adventure/investigation about Luke’s location and that he was your Watson.
“I am Watson?! I gave you most of the information you know now.”
“It was just an expression, Max.”
Soon after, you were both standing in front of the big public library. Once again, you checked the time.
5:37.
“Come on. They’re probably there already...”
“Wait a second.” Max grabbed your arm, stopping you in the middle of the steps. “Luke ran away from home, right?”
“Yes, that’s what Mrs. Patterson said...”
“Well, don’t you think that a performance in a bookclub full of people would be too... I don’t know, noisy? I mean, if he ran away, it means he doesn’t want to be discovered. I don’t think hey will perform today if that’s the case.”
You stared at him for a second before you hit him in the arm.
“Hey! What was th-?!”
“You couldn’t have said that before coming all the way here for nothing?!”
“I just thought of that! And you could’ve thought about it too! Don’t blame it all on me!”
You frowned and walked down the stairs.
“Where are you going?!” Max asked.
“Home. Dance. I don’t know.”
“Don’t be dramatic. We’re already here. We can still do some research. They probably have their information here. I don’t think they would even let them perform if not. And besides, we don’t even know if I’m right about before.”
You turned back to him, this time, embarrassed. You were being a little dramatic.
And maybe a little too optimistic.
No, you stopped yourself before any negative thought clouded your mind, no one’s ever too optimistic.
And you couldn’t back up from the investigation in the first day. That was basically breaking rule #5.
You walked back to Max and without saying anything, you walked into the library together.
As much as you wanted Max to be wrong, he actually was right: the guys didn’t show up. And maybe it was also because of what Max said, but it was not the reason the people at the library told you. You asked about them and most of the workers frowned immediately at what you said, either confused or mad.
“Those guys aren’t allowed to play here. They just showed up a couple of times, but trust me, they won’t come back.” The librarian told you.
Therefore, Max’s backup idea didn’t work either.
Ten minutes later, you and Max sat on the steps outside the library, not knowing what to do next.
Your watch ticked 5:50. Tamra said she would be there at six.
You said hi to Hannah when she got there. She asked if you were going in.
“Not really.” You sighed, and decided to tell her the truth. “I came to do some research on that band... It’s named Sunset Curve. Tamra told me they played here the day she came with you.”
“Oh, yeah! I almost forgot that happened.” She chuckled. “I didn’t come to the meeting prior to that, so I wasn’t aware that a band would be playing in our bookclub. That’s why I forgot to tell you about them, I’m so sorry.”
“It’s okay. Did you get to talk to them?”
“A little bit. They stayed for the whole meeting and then ate almost all the snacks on the table. We just talked about music for a bit. Well, Tamra did. I was just standing next to her having no idea of what were they talking about... But if I see them today I can try to get more information, if you want.” Hannah offered when she noticed the disappointment in your face.
“They’re not coming today. Or ever, again. I already asked. But thanks, Hannah, I really appreciate it.”
She smiled at you sweetly and squeezed your shoulder. “I’m sure you’ll get something soon. See you guys around.”
You checked your watch for the hundredth time now. 6:04.
“When you said that Luke’s band plays at a bookclub.” You said to Max some minutes after Hannah left. “I thought you meant they play here OFTEN. You didn’t mention they played here TWICE before and weren’t even allowed to do so!”
“I didn’t know that either! I just supposed...”
“You supposed?!”
“Well, yes! I heard the other day at school... some of the Math Club members attend this bookclub and they said that Luke’s band performed there so I just guessed they might just play here often!”
“I can’t believe you sometimes.” You felt mad. But tried to calm down. You would get nothing by reproaching him.
You decided to stay quite. Otherwise, you might yell at him.
“So what are we doing now?” Max spoke after a while.
“I don’t know.” You said honestly.
Another silence.
And then, you had the most simple idea, which, you thought, you should’ve come up with way earlier.
“Can’t you ask a friend if they know more about Luke’s bandmates?”
Max blushed, and you thought that was suspicious. “Don’t think so. My friends are... busy.”
You frowned. “All the time?”
You said, more than asked.
“Y-yeah...”
“Every single one of them?”
“Yes, Y/N.” He rolled his eyes, but his nervousness was still visible.
“Max.”
He looked at you sideways and then sighed. “Fine, I... don’t have many friends at school. I don’t make much of an effort to make more, either.”
“Why?”
“I don’t know. I’m just not the social type.”
“But you have friends?”
He rolled his eyes. “Yes, I have friends. Well... one friend. His name is Ian. We’ve been classmates since first grade. And we moved together to the same high school.”
“What about the guys from the neighborhood?”
“Well yeah, them too, I guess. We’re just not too close.”
“Like Luke.”
Max scoffed. “Yeah, with the only difference that Luke could be close with everyone if he wanted to. I am not close with anyone because, again, I’m not exactly sociable.”
“But you could be.” You insisted.
“I guess. It’s not that easy, you know...?” He then gave you a look and shook his head. “You don’t know. You are sociable. Like Luke.”
You weren’t sure of what to say, so you just stayed quiet.
“Speaking of which, why are you so invested on finding him, anyway?”
It was your turn to blush, but you were saved by Tamra, who stopped the car in front of you.
“Let’s go.” You said, and he followed you.
So today’s mission didn’t go exactly as planned, but you had lots of clues. It was impossible not to find anything. This day had to end on a good note.
Tamra left you at your dance studio before going back home with Max. You told him you would call him later.
During your dance class, you managed to distract yourself for a bit. But you came back to trying to come up with something as soon as you got out of class.
“I’ll use your landline! Call me when dinner’s ready!” You said once Tamra parked in the driveway.
You said hi to your parents and ran to your room to pick your notebook and then go to your sisters’ room.
So you did come up with something.
You decided to call every kid from the block that knew Luke, and try to get more information. Your last alternative was to go to the Patterson’s house and talk to Emily herself, although you were kind of nervous at that idea and you weren’t too hopeful about it since Max mentioned she didn’t know much about Luke’s band.
“All she knows is he has a band and that she doesn’t like the idea.” He’d said that afternoon.
You took the phone and dialed the first number: Amy Campbell.
You decided to go straight to the point with everyone, just to not lose any time and call Max as fast as possible to update him.
“Hello?” You heard Amy on the other line.
“Hey Ames! It’s Y/N-.”
“Y/N! You’re coming to my pool party, right?”
You blinked. A pool party?
Something clicked in your head. Amy’s pool party, of course. It was this weekend. You forgot to ask permission to your parents.
“Of course I’m going.” You said, even though you weren’t actually sure. Amy cheered.
“Awesome! Almost everyone already confirmed they’re coming, except for... Luke.” She said, and you rapidly took the opportunity to ask her about what you originally called for.
“Actually, I wanted to ask you about him, um, don’t you happen to know anything about his band?”
“Oh my gosh, are you helping to find him? That sounds so much fun!”
You faked a chuckle. “Yeah, yeah.”
“Well, I don’t know much, but... I saw them perform in front of this club once, when I was going out for dinner with my family. We stopped to watch them along with some other people. Before they were kicked out. Oh, I also know his parents don’t love the idea of him on a band.”
“Do you remember the name of the club?”
“Oh, not really... but I can tell you it was close to that restaurant... Delish Japan? Yeah, I think that’s how it’s called.”
You wrote that down.
You thanked her and hung up. So your first call went well.
Although the rest of the calls were pretty similar. Most of the kids said they saw the band playing either in front or in the back of different clubs. One of them mentioned they saw them play at another bookclub.
“Any news?” Max said once he answered your call.
“Kind of.” You checked the names of the clubs written in your notebook. “Almost every kid said they saw the band playing in some club or bookclub. It seems that they do that, without asking.”
“You mean playing in places people might see them?”
“Yes. They know it’s not easy to book a gig at any place. Especially since they don’t have a manager and they’re just teenagers...” You sighed. “This information is pretty much useless, isn’t it?”
“I didn’t want to say it but... yes.” You groaned while Max kept talking. “I mean I guess we could go check those clubs but one, we’re minors and two, they just set their stuff, play and then they get kicked out. I don’t think any of those places have their personal information.”
“My other idea was to go and talk to Mrs. Patterson but... I don’t know if it’ll be useful. I don’t know what else could I do anyway.”
“Me neither.”
You already thought of something else, actually.
You sighed again, this time more dramatically.
“If someone around here at least went to the same school Luke does... That way we could ask some people about him and his band...”
“Come on.” You could practically hear Max rolling his eyes. “I don’t wanna do that.”
“Max, this could go faster if only you took the courage to talk to people. I’m not asking you to go out with them. Just ask them about Sunset Curve...”
“Y/N. I told you before. It’s not that easy for me-.”
“Y/N! I’ve been calling you for half an hour now! Come down for dinner!”
You heard your mom yelling from downstairs and you froze. You said you were going the first time you heard her but you didn’t realize it’s been half an hour since then.
“I’m coming!” You yelled back, and then said goodbye to Max.
You frowned while jogging down the stairs. You told Tamra to tell you when dinner was ready. Now your mom would be mad at you.
After your mom reproaching that she called you “a million times”, you defending yourself that you asked your sister to call you and her saying she never actually agreed to doing so, your dad stopped you. Silence flooded the room for a few minutes.
“Tamra told us you went to the library to do some research on Luke.” Your dad talked. “Did you find anything?”
“Not really.” You said, finally letting the disappointment get into you. “Any of our plans worked.”
“Don’t worry, sweetheart. I’m sure you’ll get something soon.” Your dad squeezed your hand and you smiled at him.
“Let us know if you need any help.” Your mom added.
You slowly nodded.
When you finished your food, you decided to stay and just listen to your parents’ conversation.
“Are you done?” Tamra asked then, and you frowned.
“Why?”
“Just- Yes or no?”
“Yes, I’m done.”
“Good. Come with me.”
You and Tamra thanked for the food and she guided you to her room. You sat on her bed while she started looking through the mess.
“What are you doing?” You asked, and she didn’t respond.
“Here” You heard her say before stretching down to take a purse from the floor.
She then went through it and took a piece of paper out of it, which she gave to you and you looked at it closely. A phone number was written on it.
“It’s one of the band members’ phone number. Not sure who, but he was flirting with me the day I went to the bookclub with Hannah.”
Your face beamed.
“You’re not gonna need it?”
“Pff, no. I have a boyfriend, remember? And he was not my type anyway”.
Actually, you forgot she had a boyfriend. They started dating just a few months ago but Tamra hasn’t taken him to the house yet.
“Why didn’t you tell me before?!” You said.
“I forgot I had it.” She shrugged.
You were too excited to get mad at her. You hugged her and asked to use her landline again. She agreed and left you there.
As fast as you could, you took the phone and dialed the number.

Missing (1/?)
Tumblr media
Summary: Your next door neighbor, Luke Patterson (a.k.a. your longtime crush) has gone missing, and you think you could help finding him.
Word count: 2.7k
Warnings: None, I think!
Author’s note: Hey there! This is planned to be a series, so let me know if you would be interested on reading more! Also, it’s set in 1995 and the first parts are pretty much platonic, since there’s not much interaction with Luke, but I promise it gets there❤️ And one last thing, english isn’t my mother language, so please forgive me if there are mistakes of any kind xo
Part 2
It’s been two months since you moved to this nice house with your older sister and your parents. Two months since you said hello to this new neighborhood and couldn’t wait to make new friends. And you, indeed got along perfectly with some kids your age that lived around the place as soon as you got there. Tamra, in the other hand decided to just stay in “Hi” terms with the kids her age, because she said making new friends was like “betrayal” to the ones she already had and that she didn’t need any more friends. You thought that was dumb. Why not making new friends when you had the opportunity to? And it wasn’t like she would never see Lucy, Justin, Mia, Brandon and the rest of her friend group (whose names you could hardly recall even after ten years of friendship) since they would still go to their school. Their new house was just ten minutes further from school than their old house. You told her so, but, of course, you just got back a popular “You wouldn’t get it” from her. Which only frustrated you, since Tamra was only two years older than you, and she still pulled the “I’m older and therefore wiser” card in any situation she found the possibility to do so.
You rolled your eyes at the thought. Sitting in your window seat, discretely peeking behind your curtains, you sighed. Two months since you became friends with probably everyone at the neighborhood.
Except for him.
The cute boy next door who you could easily see behind his window room from your own room.
He usually sat on his bed and played on his guitar. He sang, too.
And you couldn’t be more in love with a boy you didn’t know.
A week or so after you move, you noticed he was barely at home, and even if he was, he was gone as soon as he came back. You wondered where did he go when he wasn’t there in his room, windows open, singing with that beautiful voice he had. Sure, the kind of music he usually played wasn’t exactly relaxing. But you didn’t care. You loved his music. And his voice, and you could sit there all day, just listening to him. You could say you knew every song he played, songs you’ve never heard before until you moved next to his house.
You fantasized almost every night of meeting him. You knew his name and with a bit of luck, maybe he remembered yours.
The day you moved, he and his parents knocked at your door with kind smiles and a basket of muffins.
“I’m Emily, this is my husband Mitch and this is our son Luke. We’re the Pattersons and if you need anything, don’t hesitate on calling us.” Mrs. Patterson gave you and your family a big smile, which you gladly returned. Your mom thanked them for the basket and the nice welcome. They were the first family of many to give you wishes and baskets full of different kinds of food. Even then, Luke luckily said hi to you all. You noticed he wasn’t exactly excited to be there. He had a frown on his forehead, puppy eyes and a pout on his mouth. You thought he was adorable.
Besides that, you and Luke never actually held a conversation. Sometimes, when having having a tea party in the porch with some of the friends you made in the neighborhood, they would see Luke either coming or leaving, and they would say hi, so you would say hi to him too. Or if you were fooling around or practicing with your dance friends in the front yard, you would wave at him if you saw him. He would always wave back with a big smile, which melted your heart. He barely knew you, but smiled at you like he did. You wished your interaction with him was more than that, of course. But you were too nervous to approach to him, which even to you, seemed ridiculous. You’ve never had any kind of trouble to talk to someone. But he made you feel weird things in your stomach. And your heart would react instantly at the sight of him walking down the street. You thought about it and came up with two points of why you couldn’t get yourself to just talk to him.
1. He was constantly moving. Usually, rushing to wherever he was heading. You didn’t want to bother him.
2. ...
Well, you didn’t have another point and you knew the only point you had sounded more like an excuse. You thought of the possibility of talking to him when he was playing his guitar in his room, like saying hi, or something. But maybe that wasn’t a great idea. Tamra was the musician of the family, along with your dad. She played the guitar, piano and even sang. You sang too, a little bit, but you were more of a dancer, like your mom was.
When Tamra’s practicing, you cannot bother her. She gets mad if you do. Maybe Luke didn’t like being interrupted while practicing, either.
But maybe, he wasn’t like your sister.
You closed your curtains. Even after overthinking everything, you didn’t want things to be planned with him. You wanted everything to come naturally. Except that things weren’t, happening. Two months and anything far from a “Hello” or “Good afternoon” happened yet.
“Have you guys seen Luke today?.” Your dad asked at dinner, a few nights later picking up some lettuce with his fork.
You froze. You did not see Luke that day. But you didn’t make a big deal out of it. He was constantly out of his house. The question felt like a trap.
They found out, you thought, they found out I’ve been watching Luke ever since we moved and they’re gonna make fun of me and tease me for-
“The Pattersons’ son?.” Tamra asked, interrupting your thoughts. “You barely see him at home anyway. Why?”
“Well, Emily came here this afternoon, when you guys were out, and told me that Luke left last night after a fight with her and hasn’t came back. She is really worried.” Your mom said. “If he doesn’t show up tomorrow, we’re gonna hang flyers around the neighborhood”.
The fact that your family actually didn’t catch you didn’t help you relax.
Luke was missing?
“If you guys happen to see him, please tell us.” Your dad added, Tamra and you nodded.
There was moment of silence that was only broken by your sister.
“Did you guys know Luke has a band? It’s named Sunset Curve, and they’re really good.”
You glanced at her and something clicked in your head. You did notice a big handmade poster with that name taped in Luke’s wall. And he wore different shirts that also had that name painted on them. You didn’t know it was from a band. And you certainly didn’t know it was his band.
“How do you know?.” You dared to ask, your curiosity being bigger than your will of being subtle.
“They played at the library where Hannah has her bookclub. I went with her last week.” She explained.
Your mind went back to thinking while your dad tried to convince Tamra that it was a good idea to befriend Luke.
Was he okay? He could be anywhere. The past two months, you wasted your time. But not anymore.
That night, you opened your windows, (for the first time, not afraid of someone catching you), and stared at Luke’s room. You noticed it was a mess. Clothing scattered around the room and the bed was not made. You payed close attention (for the first time too) to the handmade poster.
Sunset Curve.
It didn’t have any more information.
How didn’t occur to you to ask your new friends about his band?
Well, you didn’t know he had a band a few hours ago. And you did want to ask more about him, but didn’t want to be obvious, either.
A band.
He really was attractive. He just was the type of guy any girl you knew would be into.
Suddenly, a thought made your heart sank. A girlfriend. Maybe the place he was often going to was his girlfriend’s house.
You tried to visualize any photo of a girl in his room, squeezing your eyes from the distance. But of course, you didn’t get to see anything. The only thing you could visualize was his bed, his door and the wall next to the door where his band’s poster was taped in. The fact that you couldn’t see pictures of him with a girl didn’t mean it didn’t exist any.
You felt sick at the thought. You shook your head multiple times, in denial. It was impossible you’ve been crushing on a boy with a girlfriend. That was off-limits, even if you didn’t know the girl.
You decided to leave that for later. Luke was still missing, and you had to help. But for now on, and until you found out the opposite, you would not think of Luke as the beautiful human being you always thought he was...
You shook your head, trying to clear your mind with that gesture.
“Don’t be pathetic.” You whispered to yourself.
You went back to his band.
One of his usual destinations was most definitely the place he and his bandmates practiced at, wherever that was.
Bandmates, of course.
They had to know something, if Luke wasn’t staying with them already.
You buried your face into your hands. This would’ve been way easier if both of you went to the same school.
An ironic laugh slipped from your lips. This would’ve been easier if you actually took the courage of talking to him.
Suddenly, you realized. Max. The guy that lived in front of your house, probably knew something. They did go to the same school, although they weren’t too close. He still had to have some information.
You grabbed your coat ready to head to Max’s, but suddenly stopped. The clock above your door ticked 11:56 p.m. And it wasn’t until then that you noticed the silence in your house. Everyone went to bed already, of course. The next day was still a weekday anyway.
You tried to come up with a plan. You couldn’t wait until tomorrow. And you had school, so your investigation would be delayed. It was definitely now or never.
Almost immediately, your mind started reproducing Luke’s (or Sunset Curve’s) song that quoted that phrase. Now or never. You considered it your favorite song of his. Well, them.
Focus, you thought to yourself.
You knew for sure that Max didn’t sleep early. He was always too busy playing video games. You could call him.
And that would’ve been a good idea if you actually owned a landline. Your parents had one, and your sister, of course had one too. She didn’t even use it anymore because now she had her own cellphone, and you tried to convince her to give it to you, but she didn’t want to.
There was also one in the living room. And another one in the kitchen.
Okay, so that was an option.
The only obstacle was to be quite. How would you do that? And what would you say if your dad, who constantly wakes up to drink water during the night, saw you awake so late? You could say the truth, but you would definitely not get away with it.
Escaping was an option too. Sure, it was the harder and riskiest option. But still...
You shook your head. That was ridiculous, of course you wouldn’t scape.
The pantry, you thought.
You could just extend the phone to the pantry with you. It was impossible for anyone to hear you being there. Thank God the phone was right next to the pantry. How didn’t you think of that from the beginning?
Well, it wasn’t your fault. You only used Tamra’s landline if you needed to make a call. And you definitely never needed to hide in a safe place to not be heard. You just closed Tamra’s door if you needed privacy.
You got up from your bed and took a notebook where you wrote every phone number when you first got to the neighborhood. And not before writing the numbers down in your arm, you went, as silent as possible, to the kitchen downstairs.
You almost turned the lights on but at last, decided against it. You took the phone out of its case and carefully got into the pantry and closed the door behind you. You dialed the number and waited impatiently.
“Hello?”
You gasped, realizing then that you were actually holding your breath. “Max?”
“Y/N?” He sounded confused. “It’s twelve a.m., why are you calling? Is everything okay?.”
“Did I wake you up?” You asked, knowing the answer.
“No, no, I was playing video games... are you okay? Why are you whispering?”
“Don’t worry, I’m just calling to, um... I was just wondering if you knew something about Luke’s band? Like do you know who the members are? Besides Luke, of course.”
There was a moment of silence.
“If I wasn’t awake before you called me, I would be so mad you called at this time of the night to ask me about Luke’s band. What’s the rush? I mean I know he’s missing, but what’s with the curiosity? Why didn’t you just wait for tomorrow?”
Curiosity. Yeah, that’s exactly why she’s calling so late at night about a guy who’s practically disappeared. You rolled your eyes before talking.
“I’m too impatient.” You excused yourself, in an attempt of doing things faster. “So? Do you know anything?”
“I’m gonna wait for an explanation tomorrow.”
He told you all he knew. His bandmates also went to the same school as him and Luke, but they didn’t share classes together. Alex, Reggie and Bobby, were the names. He didn’t know the last names. He also told you that Mr. and Mrs. Patterson didn’t fully support the idea of Luke being on a band, which was the reason why Luke and his parents (especially his mom) weren’t on perfect terms. Rehearsals were the main reason Luke was often absent at home. Max also said the band practiced at one of the guys’ house, but he wasn’t sure who.
When he was done, you rapidly asked what you had on mind earlier.
“Do you know if he has a girlfriend?” You tried to ask as natural as possible.
“As far as I know, no. He doesn’t. At least he’s not with someone from our school, otherwise, I would’ve known.”
That only half calmed you down. The possibility of Luke having a girlfriend was still on the table.
“Oh, almost forgot.”
That rose your hopes up, glad to have as much information as possible.
“They play at this library... close to your school, actually. In a bookclub. I’m just not sure about the days nor the time, sorry.”
You already knew this, but you hadn’t thought of actually going before. You could just ask your sister what Max couldn’t tell you for sure.
You thanked Max and he made you promise to tell him what you were up to as soon as you could. Maybe it could be a good idea to take him along with you.
Just like you did before, quietly, you got out of the pantry and placed the phone back to its case. You were about to get out of the kitchen when you heard footsteps.
Dad, you thought, and immediately turned back around.
You turned the lights on, grabbed an empty glass and started filling it from the sink.
“Y/N?” You heard a sleepy voice behind you.
“Hey dad.” You faked a tired voice. You handed the now filled, glass of water to him.
“Thanks.” He said, taking it. You filled another glass for you.
You entertained your dad for a bit, drinking the glass of water to make him think that you came down to the kitchen for that. A few minutes later you both were back to your respective rooms.
You sighed relieved, once you closed your door behind you.
You checked the clock. 12:33 a.m.
You had plenty of information, but there were also some holes that needed to be filled. Everything Max told you was pretty useful, but you certainly needed more.
For now, you were satisfied.
