I wonder from where so many Americans get the idea that voting is supposed to be some expression of your deepest, most beloved values and virtues rather than a pragmatic, political move meant to shift your country as much closer to your ideal as possible. This strikes me as another example of extreme individualism. Voting isn’t about *you*. It’s about your city, state, and/or country. It doesn’t have to feel transcendently good deep down in your bones. It just has to *do* as much good as you can do, in this particular moment in time.

If Harris loses, please try blaming real issues (Republican-driven voter suppression and intimidation tactics; billionaire-funded Trump-PAC’s and propaganda machines; a broken electoral system that hinges presidential elections on a dozen or so states instead of a simple popular vote; or the Democratic Party’s fumbled opportunities to respond to things like the corporate greed driven cost of living crisis, the housing shortage, the medical debt and healthcare accessibility crisis, the ongoing climate disaster, and the ongoing genocide in Palestine) instead of doing the Right’s job for them by blaming folks like climate protestors, Antizionist and pro-Palestine activists, Black and Brown people, jaded millennials living paycheck to paycheck, and tumblr users with an audience ⅛ the size of the average Christofascist MegaChurch Congregation.

I've seen it going around here that Americans love college because it's the first time they have a walkable community. Maybe. But the things I miss most are more than that. Having gone to a small liberal arts college, I miss the library and the dorm common room. I miss the ability to be working in parallel with a friend from a completely different discipline and to be able to ask them about their projects as we are working on them. That doesn't seem to translate to the normal workplace at all.

I more deeply miss living so close to my friends that we can have late night conversations and still be steps from our own spaces, with no worries about how to get back. That level of shared space, I think, can only happen when people own adjacent property or live in a huge house.

No real conclusions here, except that there is something unique about the shared project of living on-campus during university education.

I absolutely love subtitles cause I have trouble understanding what is going on without them. But there is always some really annoying things that come along with (not greatly done) subtitles. My biggest pet peeve is when they aren’t lined up with the audio
