okay now - sam goes to college and starts dating guys and at first he is not picky at all but as time goes by his friends start making funnof him for liking shorter than him dirty blonde wide eyed but kind of rough looking muscular guys like the bad boys. and sam finds that funny, sure okay, maybe he has a type, whatever. and he always dates them for a week or two then breaks up because they're 'too nice' or 'not nice enough' or 'they just dont have that something, yknow?' and then one day hes out with his guys in a bar and one of his friends starts pulling at sams sleeve, pointing across the room to this one guy sayingnhow he is exactly sams type and how he should totally go and introduce himself, and sam rolls his eyes and laughs but when he turns around its dean standing with a beer in hand waving with that stupid grin of his

He was praying again. Dean couldn’t see him, but he could hear. Nothing distinctive, just mumbled words. Probably kneeling at the side of the bed, by the window—that was his favorite spot. Dean had just gotten out of the shower, and he’d learnt that while he showered, Sam prayed. Each night his rambling seemed longer. Dean felt like he was going insane. When had Sammy started believing? Where had he learnt it? What did he pray about?

Nothing that Sam kept secret like this could be good. He needed to know what was so important Sam had to pray to God about it. Was it morally correct to listen to a private prayer? Probably not. But it was Sam, and everything that was Sam’s was Deans. Always had been. So, he listened.

“Dear God, thank you for letting us return safe from this hunt. Thank you for saving Dean from that vampire.”

Dean snorted at that, that had nothing to do with some God. No, that was all him.

Sam took a deep breath before continuing, apparently done with his thanks. “God, are we judged for our thoughts? Is it a sin if I have never acted on it? I have prayed for forgiveness time and time again, and yet here I am again.”

What? What did he do desperately need forgiveness for? Was this about Jess?

“Father, please grant me forgiveness and guidance. Please let me wake up tomorrow and never think of him in that way again.” Sam had never treated their real father with that much respect. Guess only fantasy gets that treatment, Dean thought bitterly.

His voice soft and breathy, Sam begged, “Please Father, wash away my sinful thoughts of my brother.” Dean jolted, his head that had been pressed up against the peeling paint of the door jerking back. “Let my mind and body never yearn for his touch again.”

Sam shuddered and Dean fought the urge to go to his side. What was he saying? It didn’t make sense. Dean understood what he was saying abstractly, but it was all wrong. No, whatever thoughts Sam had about him, God wouldn’t fix him. Whatever yearnings he had, God wouldn’t take them away.

“Please God, save me.”

God didn’t exist. Dean did.

And Dean could save him.

I desperately want to address Samifer vs SamDean in a way that doesn’t bash either of them because holyyyyy shit it’s so good??? What do you mean there’s someone else who owns my brother. What do you mean he was made for someone who isn’t me. What do you mean my true vessel is more obsessed w his brother than me. That’s not fair because my own brother isn’t that loyal to me. Brotherly antagonism by proxy. Lucifer and Dean with competing claim over Sam’s mind-soul-body-past-present-future. Sam may be created for Lucifer but he chooses Dean. Sam may love Dean most but he feels a kinship with the Devil. Dean can’t even get mad about Michael because he’s too busy screaming at Satan that Sam is HIS brother and no ones taking him from him. Sam watching literally every worst possible outcome to his life (of course he’s cursed of course he’s created for the literal embodiment of evil and sin) and Dean is just up in his face like no. no. you’re my brother before you’re anything else. Meanwhile Lucifer is multitasking clinging to Sam because it’s not fair that’s HIS human his true vessel made specially for him and he’s jealous of Sam and of Dean why do the humans get to love each other why does Michael’s vessel get to own his why won’t Michael love him as much. And Sam’s just in corner getting tug-of-warred between the two entities who love him to the point of ownership and he’s just so grateful Dean still wants him he doesn’t even mind it.

There's just something about Lucifer- who Sam hates- not being able to take his freedom without his permission and Dean- who Sam loves and blindly trusts- doing just that. The idea itself is a masterpiece

anon this scratched the fissures of my brain i am simply speechless. this is making me think of 5.20 when bobby is berating sam for the yes to lucifer idea and he’s talking about how lucifer would truly take sam’s body from him and he says “kid, it’s called possession for a reason” like that vs how there is no better way to describe how dean feels about sam than possessive. um. the way lucifer loves sam and the way dean loves sam can both be called possession and yet only for one of them does sam return the sentiment—and that one is the one who, like you said, does not ask for consent first
