i don’t consider post s5 spn as canon but it’s still a bit funny to me when people are horrified by post kripke dean’s actions towards sam. if you actually watched the show paying attention to the core of their relationship and all its nuances (especially when it comes to power dynamics) then you know that said horrific actions aren’t ooc at all. kripke era dean did fucked up things to sam without his consent (bringing him back to life, locking him up in the panic room & obsessively stalking him) and he did that for selfish reasons (keeping sammy all for himself at all costs even if it meant nonconning sam or even killing him). also sam’s “submissive battered brotherwife” era didn’t start post kripke, actually you can see the glimpses of it throughout s4 (4.04 where dean hits him and threatens to hunt him and sam just takes it). it’s especially blatant when ruby says “dean was wrong, saying what he said to you” (referring to dean calling sam a monster) but sam chooses to metaphorically submit to dean, answering “no, he was right to say it”. at this point he’s already drowning in guilt & self hatred because of his fight with dean earlier, and then it gets worse and worse throughout the whole s5, to the point where he says “you can think whatever you want. i deserve it, and worse. hell, you’ll never punish me as much as i’m punishing myself” and “believe me, i know exactly how screwed up i am. you, bobby, cas...i’m the least of any of you”. and dean actively fuels his guilt by punishing him with mistrust, being pissed at him for “choosing a demon over his brother” and forever blaming him for trying to run away from their family (except this issue is more personal than it might seem at first glance because it’s not about family so much as about dean and his desire to have sam all for himself, and his own words make it pretty obvious — “dad wasn’t the only one you got away from”)

I know I’ve already said it million of times but it would never not be fucking funny how many brothers in spn don’t work out for the same reason sam and dean do. Like Cain literally said ‘im not my brother’s keeper’ and Michael just stood by like a good soldier and a loyal son and watched Lucifer getting imprisoned. Dean-Sammy-issues-Winchester would NEVER. He IS his brother’s keeper. He’s loyal to John up until the point where John starts arguing or shoving Sam, or telling Dean to kill him, and then its fucking over. Sammy before everything else in his head. Even when they’d thought Sam lost to Lucifer Dean still refused to leave him and decided at least they’ll die together

Like the universe tries SO fucking hard to make a parallel between Sam and Dean and Cain and Abel situation and it never works out because they keep trying to save each other even when they’re angry with their brother. Dean has been wearing the literal Mark of Cain and Sam was on his knees ready to die and still Dean refused. Brother’s keeper indeed
