The No “I Love You” Animatic In case Tumblr can’t play the video, here’s the Vimeo Link
Link to the AO3 collection So, when @fictionissocialinquiry laid out this challenge, it was mainly for writers; but she included some extra prompts therein, and one was a line from Hozier’s “Shrike”.
I couldn’t whisper when you needed it shouted This led me to listen to “Shrike” on repeat while I feverishly started doodling the thumbnails for the animatic I got in my head (so I hope that some of that emotion from Hozier’s amazing song comes through in the final board, ‘cause I listened to it. A. Lot.). While I think it’s a bit easier for drawings to express “I love you” without any words needed at all. I wanted to try and approach the task by thinking of ways one can confess that they love someone through acts of service and tenderness versus super obvious displays of love, I guess. It came out with a sort of courtly love-ish vibe that I really ended up liking. (Though I suppose reciprocation makes it not courtly love ANYWHO…)
I’m in an Ambassador Katara/Fire Lord Zuko state of mind! I just love any love story with them in these roles. There are so many different ways to play with the set up of them as Ambassador and Fire Lord. In this one, I kind of picture that they haven’t gotten together yet (this is divergent from whatever I did in the Reunion animatics; this is it’s own thing). Perhaps they are on the precipice of realizing they want to be together… I don’t know; it’s open to interpretation. XD but what I hope I portrayed clearly is how one can show that they love another. u.u
Music: The Princess Pleads for Wallace’s Life - Braveheart: The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
Please no reposting. (And while I don’t mind screenshots being posted so long as you credit me with a link to either the tumblr post or the Vimeo link, please don’t post like a bunch of frames, and there should be no money being made off of it; this is a purely not-for-profit sort of thing. These were for fun, and I enjoy people liking them one so much. However, the screenshot rule ONLY applies to the animatics, but it really is an honor system here, guys, please be judicious with how many you take.)

You know what I think is very beautiful and unique about Zuko and Katara’s relationship (okay, there are a lot of things, but you know what I mean)? No other character will ever be as connected to Zuko’s scars as Katara is.
Not Mai, the second person he allowed to touch his scar, so that she could kiss him, but not comfort him.
Not Sokka, Toph, or Suki, with whom he never even talked about his scars to in-show.
Not Aang, whose back scar caused by Azula and healed by Katara was more of a narrative parallel to Zuko’s chest scar than a personal connection between the two characters that brought them together, and with whom he never even talked about his scars to in-show.
None of them will ever be as connected to the scar on Zuko’s face as Katara is.
Katara, the first person he ever allowed to touch the scar from the most traumatic moment of his life.
Katara, the girl who was his enemy just a few minutes ago, who offered to try to use her precious spirit water to heal his scar that didn’t even physically hurt anymore, because it was that important to her if it meant he could maybe be free of his mark.
Katara, to whose touch he closed his eyes and leaned in to as she gently placed her fingers on his lips and his scar and took a moment to just watch him like that.
None of them will ever be as connected to the scar on Zuko’s chest as Katara is.
Katara, whom he intercepted lightning for, in a show of what type of love he has for her: Agape, the most selfless, boundless, and purest form of love.
Katara, whom he intercepted lightning for, despite knowing that she had no more spirit healing water, and that there was a realistically high chance he could die from this Sozin’s-comet-powered-lightning-bolt that he was trying to redirect without even being grounded in a proper stance.
Katara, whom he intercepted lightning for, in the quickest impulse he must have ever made in his entire life, because of how strong his subconscious need to protect her is. After all, he bolted faster than the speed of Azula’s Sozin’s-comet-powered-lightning to take the blast. That has to be the fastest impulse he ever made.
Katara, whose eyes widened in horror as he fell, writhing, to the ground, with a terrible lightning wound on his chest from protecting her.
Katara, who screamed his name, ran, and reached her hand out to him— desperate to heal him— and who he reached his hand back out to, while painfully suffering on the ground, all in the midst of an inferno.
Katara, the waterbender who fought a crazed firebending prodigy during Sozin’s comet, so she could reach Zuko as quickly as possible.
Katara, who healed Zuko’s wound without even having spirit water, from her sheer strong determination to keep him alive.
Katara, who immediately cried in relief when she realized that death had not pulled Zuko away from her healing hands, and that she had healed the wound on his chest.
Katara, whose name Zuko whispered in such a quiet and reverent manner to thank her for all that she had done for him, which now includes saving him from the brink of death.
Katara, who emotionally thanked Zuko back for all that he had done for her, which also now includes saving her from the hands of death.
Katara, who carefully held on to his chest scar, and supported him in rising up again— both literally and figuratively.
Katara, who Zuko’s heart literally burned for.
Katara, who Zuko’s love for is now permanently carried around as a mark on him forever.
#this comforted me#in the universe in my head they ended up together#or even after Aang died as adults they got together#bryke fumbled#and bryke will continue to fumble if the don’t give us zutara end game as adults post aang death

atla meme | [ 5 / 5 ] battles → zuko vs. ozai ; the day of black sun [ no, ] i’ve learnt everything! and i had to learn it on my own. growing up, we were taught that the fire nation was the greatest civilization in history and somehow, the war was our way of sharing our greatness with the rest of the world. what an amazing lie that was. the people of the world are terrified by the fire nation! they don’t see our greatness, they hate us! and we deserve it. we’ve created an era of fear in the world. and if we don’t want the world to destroy itself, we need to replace it with an era of peace and kindness.

How The Bond of Zuko and Katara Enhances the Themes of A:TLA
When a subplot is intertwined with a story’s core themes, it creates a more cohesive experience, resonating more profoundly with viewers. For this reason, a good writer must always aspire for a coherent narrative in all of its aspects. So, what are the themes of A:TLA, and how do Zuko and Katara fit into them? To answer that, I’m going to break down each theme and discuss how it relates to the pair.
On Destiny
Your destiny might be unexpected, controversial, but it’s yours. No one can take it away from you. In Lake Laogai, Zuko and Iroh shared the following exchange:
Even if people try, even if it isn’t acceptable to other people. Your identity will always be there, and you must make the choices that reflect your identity will always be there, because it’s your destiny. Near the series finale, in Sozin’s Comet Part 2, Iroh said:
“Sozin's Comet is arriving, and our destinies are upon us. Aang will face the Fire Lord. When I was a boy, I had a vision that I would one day take Ba Sing Se. Only now do I see that my destiny is to take it back from the Fire Nation,so the Earth Kingdom can be free again”.
In the end, everyone goes to their destinies. The destinies that they’re forging. Aang will spare the fire lord, Toph will use her metalbending to take down the airship, and Zuko and Katara will stand side by side against Azula. Who would have thought? Your destiny might be really surprising. No one could have guessed that Toph would invent metalbending, or that Aang would meet a lion turtle, or that Katara would stand by her former enemy’s side - by Zuko’s side.
Katara and Zuko’s closeness fulfill the show’s themes of destiny by being subversive and unexpected. They are fire and water, the daughter of the chief and the fire lord. Their friendship is rather odd, but it’s their destiny - not what was forced upon them. Moreover, their bond is subversive because it didn’t start as lovingly as it ended. Zuko and Katara were enemies, no one could have anticipated that they’ll grow close, but as I said, and the show said, destiny can come from an unexpected place.
On Diversity
Separation is an illusion as well as the four nations.
Zuko and Katara were not only enemies, from opposite sides of the war, but they were polar opposites – the Prince of the Fire Nation and the last waterbender of the small Southern Water Tribe, fire and water. However, all of these differences didn't matter for them to form a beautiful friendship. Because they're not actually separate, they're both kind empathetic people. They have much in common. The superficial predetermined differences aren't separation. They're one in the same.
Additionally, one will gain from learning about the other nations, or as Iroh put it:
Zuko and Katara leaning into their opposites ties into the theme. In fact, Zuko himself learned to redirect lightning from a waterbending technique.
On Redemption
Many characters in A:TLA were given a chance to redeem themselves. From Mai and Ty Lee redeeming themselves by betraying Azula near the end of the show to Iroh whose redemption has long ended before the story starts. A:tla firmly tells us that while the path to redemption can be long and hard, it’s a path worth paving and it’s yours to carve. Zuko’s redemption arc specifically is praised as one of the best redemption arcs in tv history.
A part of Zuko’s journey towards redemption is his interactions with Katara. Earning her forgiveness is his final step into integrating into the Gaang, and his final act of redemption is to jump in front of a lightning bolt for her. It’s significant that it’s Katara who represents these milestones in his arc. He redeems himself to everyone, but not in the same way as Katara. The path to redemption through Katara’s eyes is longer and ends with a bang.
On Morality
Black and white notions of the world are incomplete. The Fire Nation isn’t all evil, as seen in The Headband, their citizens are simply indoctrinated. And there can be band people on the other side of the war, such as Jet. Fire isn’t just destruction, it’s also healing and life. And the opposite of fire can be just as destructive, as seen in The Puppetmaster when Hama showcases her bloodbending. In 06×03 A\ang concludes the following:
“Anyone’s capable of great good and great evil.Everyone, even the Fire Lord and the Fire Nation have to be treated like they're worth giving a chance.”
When Zuko and Katara first met each other, they thought of each other as enemies and nothing more. Katara saw Zuko as his worst self and the manifestation of her hatred of the Fire Nation. In the Crystal Catacombs Katara described him as "the face of the enemy". She saw him as all black and no white, but then he opened up. They discover they actually have shared experiences despite being on opposing sides. When he betrayed her, it seemed to confirm that they're not similar, that everything Katara thought of Zuko was correct. Of course, he came back, but Katara can only forgive him once she lets go of some of her hatred of the Fire Nation. His connection to Katara proves that they’re both seeing the world as shades of gray.
—————————
In conclusion, the profound connection between Zuko and Katara enhances the themes of the show and their connection is a perfect example of the messages it’s trying to put out. Rather it’s about destiny, morality, diversity or redemption, Zuko and Katara’s relationship is remains one of the most relevant examples of these themes in the show.

Also what the heck is up with those Suki/Zuko moments in the comics because if there are going to be any feelings shown between characters who are already in canon relationships then it better be between Katara and Zuko

Trying to distract myself from thinking about how they might not give us much, if any at all, zutara crumbs in the adult movie of ATLA. My reasoning is, the writers in the 2006 version did not know if the show would end with Kataang or Zutara. But now that it officially ended with Kataang and of course in the comics it is very very Kataang. There will probably not be any reason to include Zutara moments in the movie. Especially because it seems like Bryke are pretty anti-Zutara. And this all just makes me sad. I gotta read a fanfic to make myself feel better ugh
#zutara#does anyone have the same fear?#maybe I should calm down#i just love them so much#i think about them a lot#can’t talk to my bf about this because he just doesn’t get it

16. Do you think Zuko and Katara developed feelings for each other in canon or post-canon?
I think, Zutara developed feelings for each other in both canon and post-canon.
If talk about development feelings in general and not specifically about romantic feelings, I can say that their development feelings had been there since the beginning of the season.
When they first met, neither of them cared about each other's existence. Zuko didn't see Katara as a threat, while Katara only saw Zuko as someone from the Fire Nation. They were enemies, nothing more than that.
After they met a few times, Zuko's impression of Katara changed from an unimportant girl and terrible waterbender, to an enemy that couldn't be underestimated.
It's a development of the relationship.
Then, their conversation in the Crystal Catacomb became a significant development in their relationship.
Their feelings develop from enemies, to someone who can understand each other because they have the same experience, which is losing their mother.
Katara trusted Zuko enough to give him something she was saving for a very important situation. Meanwhile Zuko trusted Katara enough to let her touch his scar.
Katara's expression towards Zuko conveys different meanings, in the first scene she looked annoyed and in the second scene she looked hurt. It showed that after Zuko betrayed her, Katara's feelings for Zuko grew from hatred for an enemy to hatred for being betrayed.
No one would hurt when betrayed by an enemy, unless they already trusted their enemy on different level.
Their relationship development changed drastically after Katara forgave Zuko. Their feelings for each other changed from enemies to friends. And they became yin and yang, opposites but complementing and trusting each other.
When it comes to developing feelings romantically, I feel like the spark was there since their journey in Southern Raider. Moreover, I always had a headcanon that Zuko and Katara had a really deep moment together, until Zuko picked up the rest of the Gaang to Ember Island.
The spark was still so small, they could still deny it.
The spark grew bigger when they saved each other's lives when facing Azula. This moment makes a lot more sense if they were the ones kissing in the final scene.
Or if you follow the canon storyline, then their feelings would develop in post-canon, when they finally realised that their 'canon' partner wasn't a bad person, but not right for them. They could no longer deny their feelings for each other and end up together.
17. How do you think Iroh and Hakoda would react to Zutara?
Iroh and Hakoda are wise men, I feel like they wouldn't have a problem with Zuko and Katara's relationship.
First, Hakoda. He initially had a bad assumption of the Fire Nation royal family until Sokka said that Zuko could be trusted. And Zuko proved it by reuniting him with his daughter.
Not only that, Hakoda must saw when Zuko saved Katara from the rocks. Hakoda certainly could trust his daughter's safety to Zuko no matter what the stakes. And that was proven when he gave up his life to save Katara from Azula's lightning.
If they were together, Hakoda clearly had no worries about his daughter.
In post-canon, Katara couldn't deny her feelings for Zuko but she was hesitant. She thought about her mother who died because of the Fire Nation, how she ends up in a relationship with the Fire Lord?
Hakoda would convince Katara that Fire Lord Zuko wasn't the one who killed her mother, instead he was the one who brought her to her mother killer. And her mother wouldn't be happy to see her daughter kill her own heart because of her, after she sacrificed her life to keep her daughter alive.
Then Iroh. He knew his nephew very well, especially his stubborn nature. Iroh is wise and always sees things from a different perspective, he must felt that Katara was a good influence on Zuko. But still, I'm sure he was surprised when Zuko, without any hesitation, asked Katara to accompany him to facing Azula, rather than insisting on fighting her alone.
If they were together, Iroh must be sure they would complement each other, because he knew there was bond between them since Zuko took the lightening to save her.
In post-canon, Zuko couldn't deny his feelings for Katara but he was hesitant. As a Fire Lord, he was afraid that his people would not accept someone from the water tribe to become First Lady. Moreover, this had never happened before in the history of the Fire Nation royal family.
Iroh will convince Zuko that he has made history by declaring the end of the 100-year war, he as Fire Lord can also make history by marrying someone from the Water Tribe. Their marriage will be a symbol of peace between the Fire Nation and the other nations. Also, Zuko has a lot of responsibilities and Katara could help him to lead their people.
18. How do you think the Gaang would react to Zutara?
When Zuko and Katara surprised the Gaang that they were dating, no one shocked, except for Aang.
They were like, "I knew this day would come."
Zuko and Katara didn't realised that their love on each other was very obvious. The rest of the Gaang knew it from the start, but kept it quiet and gave them a chance to develop their own relationship.
I guess, the Gaang started to get suspicious at this point. They didn't know what their problems, but it seemed very personal.
Imagine after that, Zuko went to Sokka and talked about his sister. Since Zuko interrupted his date with Suki, Sokka must've told her and Suki started to wonder, "Is there something between them?"
After a little field trip with Zuko, they seemed to be very close, but they denied it. But, the more they denied it, the more it became clear there was something between them.
It was weird that during the performance of Ember Island Players, the Gaang always commented on various occasions, but they didn't comment or shocked during Zuko and Katara scene in the Crystal Catacomb.
I mean, the show did exaggerate the facts, but it was still based on reality. No one really knows what was going on between them and the scenes on stage were supposed to be controversial.
I was expecting a comment, maybe from Sokka as her brother, like, "Hey, you guys weren't really flirting, were you?" But no, Suki smiled instead and Sokka looked like it wasn't a surprise.
They denied it again when June teased that they were dating. Did the Gaang notice? Of course!
They held hands before, then they slept back to back, then Katara comforted Zuko before meeting his uncle, then Zuko asked Katara without hesitation to face Azula. And Gaang was there to notice all of that.
As I said before, all of the Gaang members are aware that there is something between Zuko and Katara, except Aang.
It wasn't like Aang didn't realise that, he just denied it because his attraction to Katara. He was still saw her as his 'forever girl'. But later, after Aang matured, he finally realised that his duty as the Avatar was far more important than his crush on Katara. The only way to open his chakra was to let Katara go and he did that.
Aang finally accepted the relationship between Zuko and Katara.

“The stress of planning a wedding. The chaos of today. Marrying me.”
[ID: A five panel full color digital comic displays Katara and Zuko after their wedding and after all the trials and tribulations they had to endure to get to that point.
Panel 1: Katara and Zuko are dressed for their wedding in complementary outfits that combine both their cultures (both wear some red and some blue, each also has elements of fur on their garments). Katara’s hair is styled with a pearl and seashell headdress and a gossamer veil, and Zuko’s hair is pulled half up into a topknot, held in place by his Fire Lord crown. Zuko takes Katara’s hand and asks nervously “So, was it worth it?” as Katara looks up at him smiling. They stand in a reception room while the audience can see through open doors behind them to the grand hall where all their loved ones are walking toward them. Sokka has his arm around Suki and is fist pumping the air, Toph is dragging Aang by the hand while Aang air bends confetti into the sky. Momo flies overhead. Iroh follows in the background.
The next three panels have jagged edges and are cocked at strange angles indicating chaos.
Panel 2: In a red color scheme, the panel indicates a gas leak emanating through the hotel everyone was staying at for the wedding. Suki is in the foreground motioning back to the group to get out of the building while covering her mouth with a rag. Sokka, Zuko, and Katara motion to other hotel occupants to follow them out of the building. Swirls of gas float in the background above Suki’s head.
Panel 3: In a blue color scheme, Katara is turned disdainfully away from Haru, with a mustache, who proudly proposes to Katara on one knee with his hand over his chest and his eyes closed. He is trying to say “Katara will you marry m-” But Katara’s word bubble overlaps his saying “THERE’S A FRICKIN’ BOMB, HARU”
Panel 4: In a purple color scheme, Katara tearfully shows Zuko her dirty and damaged veil. Zuko holds up half of the veil, looking down to assess the damage. They are both wearing casual tunics, and Zuko’s tunic is open, showing the scar on his abdomen.
The middle three panels are accompanied by two small line drawings of flustered Zuko and Katara outside of the panels.
Panel 5: The close up of Katara and Zuko in their wedding outfits shows them from the shoulders up. Zuko is leaning down to rest his forehead gently against Katara’s. Both of their eyes are closed as she answers his question from the first panel, simply stating, “Absolutely.” Their hands are clasped together above their hearts, smiling softly. The image is soft and glossy looking. /END ID]
