According to a 2010 study by the U.S. Department of Commerce, Economics and Statistics Administration(2), women typically expect lower levels of business growth in terms of sales and employment. One explanation given is that women business owners, on average, are still spending more time dealing with childcare than their male counterparts. This gives them less time to devote to their businesses than men. The study points out that women may in fact be choosing self employment because of family factors. More than one-third of self-employed women have children under the age of 18. The same study finds that female business owners tend to work fewer hours and are more concerned with work flexibility and family-work balance than their male counterparts. Possibly as a direct result of their family concerns, women also obtain less outside financing and may expect less business growth than do men.

Recognizing these concerns, the Women’s Incubator aims to help even the odds and improve the chances for success of self-employed women and women-led businesses. In addition to an opportunity to receive a microloan, participants will receive (depending on their specific business and personal needs): one year of office space, start-up business services, mentorship, classes and free on-site childcare.

For Seattle Families, Quality, on-site childcare will be provided that allows for the flexible needs of parents with young children. Drop-in hours will be available throughout the day, with regularly scheduled activities throughout the week.

Summers in Seattle can be quite spectacular, but some days shine brighter. The day that Josh and Nicole got married at the Olympic Sculpture Park stands out. The highlight moment of this day is when the bride walks down the aisle. Her smile radiates and you can feel the joy. Overall, it was probably one of the most gorgeous days in 2016. Maybe it was the views, or maybe it was the fabulous celebration of this couple.

Lulu is also part of WonderLab Culture Collective, which is focused on economic, healing and transformative justice. Among Lulu’s upcoming events is a Fundraiser to help send Generative Somatics students from the Seattle community to San Fransisco to learn how to be more effective movement workers and transformative healers. The love between Liberty and Erin is a love you can only aspire to attain after gallons of jet fuel, after hours of hard work, after many measures of music, and after years of gazing deeply into each others eyes. This wedding was not just a celebration of their decade to each other, but a huge embrace of their love and their family.
