MIP, BAFTA, Exhibitions, Essays, Pitching & More 3D Animation!
Sorry had a mad few weeks!  Managed to get back on the ball with my work and GET A B FOR MY PITCH *popping with pride* since I literally tackled the project tin about 2 days flat from having to go home.

My idea was to create a wishing well of people’s past wishes and versions of themselves they’d discarded over time, after creating the image I had the idea to do a multi-plane animation where coins would fall in physically and different stories would play out on the different coins- I’ll post half of the animatic above. Unfortunately we could only chose 6 of a class full of incredible ideas, I am now working with Saffron on her incredibly sensitive and influential idea of ‘Mother’ which is an animation about a woman giving birth to the ocean and the earth, with feminist ideas about how in the history all of the mothers have given birth to every human, the female of every living creature is the life bringer and how in human history this has been horrifically subsidies and not celebrated especially in western culture... she’s given me the birthing part to animate (gross) so I’m currently having to research birthing contractions, i never thought this was a thing my job would make me do but ya know.
We, as a group, were brave enough to go and visit the house of the BAFTA’s wednesday evening and got talking to employees in a conference about jobs in the animation industry so that was really exciting, although they were talking about political and government funding for the animation industry which were things that kind of went over my head but I did a good job of collecting business cards. Also starting to think about my MIP which I’m going to do in 3D I think so going to go create some rigs tomorrow I will post more about that when I’ve solidified the idea (it is feminist!_)
Also helping a 3rd year out on a project about a Library, lots of exciting stuff and not enough sleep as usual 8_8

This isn’t available online yet but this is some of the funniest shit I’ve watched in a while, whoever wrote the script is a genius, reminds me of the craven dale adverts but obviously we got sneaky peak at the short film festival awards I can’t find any that we were shown yesterday we also watched a really weird one called “decorado” which won the animation + live action in. I would tell you more but I had to leave yesterday due to unforeseen circumstances so i will be working at home for a few days until i get back to my full spirit: https://www.festivalscope.com/all/film/a-town-called-panic-back-to-school
I will link to me and Matts film when he’s finished putting the titles on and given me a copy, we got top marks... watch out bitches! Nah, mainly his doing, I helped. It was a really great project and he helped me to learn how to work in a really professional and fast way so hopefully I can keep that up for future projects. Hopefully go along to some evenings and send it off to some places so that’s really positive.

The project is coming together nicely I think - we’re meeting tomorrow after the 3d tutorial to work on it together. I’m growing really fond of the 3D programme hopefully nail that down good over the summer I’d love to be able to work in video games ect. so I’m really glad I can do that, wow surprise. I think 2d drawn animation scared me too much, I’m getting better at it and feeling more comfortable using flash but it still looks a bit weird to me, but with practice I’m sure I’ll get better. Here are some of the interior of the car I’ve done for the background of the animation, and the 3D object I made for the front of the car to spin around (one of the brief requirements)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’ve been messing around on Flash trying to animate a peacock for our closing scene, he’s moving okay I think, I’ll go over it with `Matt tomorrow before trying to properly animate it but I think I can do a walk cycle of a peacock, they move weird haha I love bird they move their heads really weirdly tempted to try and animate some pigeons just because they are hype. I finalised the characters and painted some backgrounds. Trying to squeeze in time to go over my type and 2d animation projects may try and do a few all nighters this week, I’m the kind of person who can’t function if I don’t get my full 12 hours sleep and it doesn’t bide well with the animation industry, trying to train myself to need less sleep but it just end in me not getting up.

I almost forgot my illustrationy day on wednesday where I got to see the old illustration tutors Racheal and Paddy, I feel like I haven’t seen anyone from illustration in like years. (Obviously lies, but, most of my close friends apart from my flat mate are all in animation with me). The book cover review was fun but I feel like they’ve given me MORE work, which I’m not that happy about. I liked my cover, but the things they picked up on were reasonable -
https://www.instagram.com/p/BO5gQSMAMfb/?taken-by=junafish64
the figure in the foreground is a bit weird so I might try re-drawing it or taking her out, it’s also a lot of the same style of my quite expressive drawing techniques, so they told me to balance it out with a computerised font, or even try just having the text i’ve drawn without any pictures and changing it from red because it is a bit too associative of blood and this isn’t reflective of the story’s tone. I guess it all depends on who’s judging as well, because with the Jonathan cape as much as I liked the comics that were selected, I personally don’t think they were my favourite in terms of story and interesting layout out of the people in my year group, they chose three people from our course all who drew the comics in a similar style, so if I’m serious about this I think I may want to look into the judges, their work and their ideas about design. But that’s if I have time. I was also in the right place at the right time to not escape the briefing for the reportage- my location drawings last year were some of my favourite pieces of work but again time wise, as this is a bonus brief, however with the chance of my work being exhibited, I would like to enter a proposal if it can tie in with my daily activities i.e me and my Japanese friend are now attending language exchange meet-ups sundays, I’ve been thinking about topics for my FMP and this whole Donald Trump thing has gotten me really fired up like the rest of the people I know. I’d like to do something on feminism or racism, so like, if i can build a body of work for my reportage that helps me with the project we’re being set in April, then I might go ahead with entering it. Yumi Sakagawa’s work really inspires me and i love this idea of an intergalactic community, personally, I have absolutely loved London FOR its multicultural side, those are the areas that I flourish I love meeting interesting people from different cultures and different background I find it really inspiring to meet people who are different from me. So in terms of ideas I think this is sparking me off with something https://www.instagram.com/p/BPsy9yMFGqh/?taken-by=yumisakugawa

I’ve had a fairly good week, I feel happy and on top of things, I’ve got flash and 3dsmax-ish programme at home now so i’ve been playing around in my spare time to try and get better at using them. I feel like this has been one of my favourite projects - not only has it been great working with Matt it’s just helping my confidence as an animator get better. I still have a long way to go haha - this is his animation tests for how the distortion of the argument will work https://www.instagram.com/p/BPYNd_Wluwp/?taken-by=mattarmitageanimation
We had an acting workshop on Tuesday which was quite fun, I’m not sure how useful it was but it helped to get an idea of the characters we’re working with. I thin I enjoyed working with the professional film camera’s the most though!
The animatic below is a rough storyboard i put together last night, we’ve been discussing if a desert is too cliche and maybe considering using something like the Yorkshire Mores since we’re British anyway. I’m not sure you have mirages in the Yorkshire Mores though but we could change our man’s hobby to bird watching or the great outdoors. The split camera angle considering showing our animation through the eyes of a dog to make the camera angles more experimental like this fly animation:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CiKrnPW9NP8
this film actually makes me feel really uncomfortable and like I don’t want to kill a fly again.
Today we did a storytelling workshop working on narratives that we started last week and I was working with Shoiri and Kimmy, yay!
Tumblr media
We made a story which was a bit like a cross between Wall-E and 9, they were apocalyptic underground creatures that could grow plants on their heads (Shiori’s idea), I think we read it out really well as a team and I enjoyed collaborating with two other people to write a story as I’ve done creative writing alone for use in comics ect but working with other people is actually really nice, I’ve found this a lot of people complain about the group projects but I find working with more than one person helps each other to bounce off of each other ideas and create things that are really bizarre and unique.
This is Matts drawing of our narrative:
Tumblr media
These are the drawing I got from the rest of the group’s story’s:
Peter and Matts story about a composer who got too carried away and brainwashed his actors to become puppets to his piano
Tumblr media
Saffron and Sherlocks story about youth trying to escape from some dark terrifying authorities hunting them down:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Saskia and Lydia’s story about a man called Brian and his World of Warcraft obsession and him becoming and actual Mage:
Tumblr media
Holly’s story about a man walking for miles because no one liked him and he never liked anyone either:
Tumblr media
and Laura and Ahmeds story about people who couldn’t go near sunlight and lives in the darkness and red artificial lights:
Tumblr media
And My favourite drawing is on my instagram here of Lorna and Lillie’s Hell rado station:

3D SMAX SMAX
I legit really enjoyed the first 3D animation workshop
https://www.instagram.com/p/BPVLBQmAKmh/?taken-by=junafish64
I think I might even be able to rock quite happily with the David O’Rielly esque stuffs so I’m actually quite happy to give this a try, Pixar animation still seems far in the distance if not impossible for me but who wants to be mainstream anyway.
We’re thinking of having a car as our 3D object for our animation. Me and Matt are working quite happily together, I think? I’m happy to be working with him, if I'm not like the annoying animation apprentice I think it’s all good, we’ve got good ideas together for this wonderful piece of sound-
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L0Vh9E3Kh4M
We’re staging an argument, at first we had the idea of a middle class family having tea or in like a public place to contrast with the irregular sounds
Tumblr media
we were thinking about multimedia animations like these to allow us both to animate and experiment together with a style that won’t appear too juxstapositioned:
https://vimeo.com/135523594
we’ve agreed that a car is a good and common place for arguments about nothing to break out and after speaking with Martina she was very fond of our idea of a car argument, perhaps the guy is very enthusiastic about the destination and the wife is just going alone because she loves him, they get lost, the venue turns out to be not what they thought it was, the sat nav breaks down in the middle of nowhere, they’re stuck in traffic. I’m really excited for the rest of the project, we’ve got to act this out next week LOLs, we’ve decided that I’m going to be the guy and he’s going to be the wife, but we’re deciding on his erratic hobbies wether it’s hiking, fIshing, bug fighting (collecting a rare species of bug), bee keeping, trains or Batman or Star Wars.
Going to come up with some storyboards and further solidification of the idea and meeting him again of Friday so we can prepare our outfits for the green screen room next Tuesday.
Here are some good animations we watched this morning: https://vimeo.com/140650787

Term 2!!!
AAARRRRHHHHHH! hahaha.
I'm on top of my work for the first and probably the last time this year, I finished my essay two weeks before the deadline am I the same Juna? (No, no I, I don’t know what happened there someone new has replaced my body). apart from I should have done some more animating over the Christmas break but still sorting out the adobe software for my new laptop. Started the term off with workshop with Martin (YES, as always the best and most unique teacher)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Finished one or two ideas for the penguin book cover and it’s going to be tricky this term because I’m sticking with Animation but I also want to attend some of the Children's books workshops (will they let me do that? hopefully). The finalised one I have at the moment I really love it but I think it’s very similar to existing ones (whether that matters or not?) I’ve got a few more drawn up ideas so hopefully over the weekend I can put some more down in Photoshop. I feel like a breath of fresh air going back to my comfort zone ha ha ha ha animation is so out of my depth but when you’re struggling you ARE GROWING! must keep telling myself that!
https://www.instagram.com/p/BO5gQSMAMfb/?taken-by=junafish64
We’ve got a nice gift exchange thing to celebrate the new term happening tommorow which was a mini sub project but I think what I made is REALLY cute. It’s a Survival Kit/ First aid bag for the year ahead I would personally be very happy if I was receiving this so whoever gets it APPRECIATE, can hang it from your wall, each box has a paper item inside! I made bottles and plastic packets from acetate.
Tumblr media
OUR 3D ANIMATION LIP SYNCH PROJECT HAS COMMENCED I WOULD SAY KILL ME NOW but I’m paired with MATTHEW who can actually animate really well, save the lord I can cry sweet tears of not certain death.

Been writing essay and drawing mostly, gonna get on with animations and Penguin book prize when I get back to London next week. Christmas has been a mad rush but a long needed rest. I’m enjoying writing about Disney, and feminism, my previous essay was on feminism so it’s something I can build upon but I find the more I write about it the more complex it gets. Discrimination and sexism is something that is on a global, nation and also a personal level, and all these contradicting factors make it very very difficult, but that’s great because it gives me a lot to write about. I’ve always been a secret Disney lover, I obviously see how the films can be improved on a social awareness level but they’ve always had their charms for me. I’ve mainly been writing about Princess and Wiked witches but I should get onto masculine males and effeminate villains but Tamatoa is my new FAVOURITE even though we only get to see a little bit of him. Not sure about Moana, on a scale of how much they rehashed the storyline it’s BORING AF, like, It’s every Disney film I’ve ever seen mashed up and put together differetly.  But I have been guilty listening to the soundtrack a lot... Watching the Lion King on Christmas Day, there are really hardly ANY differences between these films. And sure, Moana was strong and independent and saved her own storyline but I don’t know if it was gender positive? Moana was PERFECT, honestly a bit dull from how perfect they made her, increasing the princesses agency is important, but the character still needs to overcome personal flaws or it’s just not believable, Moana was a character without flaws, and Moui, was a prick, he had all these hang ups, and was snarky and vile to Moana throughout the storyline and received no punishment for his behaviour. At the end, Moui received his hawk wings, his freedom... and Moana, got to go home? To.... build... her home? It was very questionable, it appeared progressive but smelt so badly of profit making there wasn’t much to the story at all, apart form the fact they truly celebrated Polynesian culture, which admittedly I don’t actually know that much about.

Everything you ever wanted to know about Feature Length Animation videos!
Brought to you by myself, Peter Crownsmith, Shuheng Fu, Anastasia La Sala, Rosa Freya and Simon Knellos!
Well, I think we got a little bit too opinionated at parts, to make the video clearer we should have added the film titles, so the audience could take notes and watch any of the relevant point films, and we should have stuck to factual information as Peter’s argument towards the end may or may not be realistic. It is true that series animations may be becoming more and more of a trend as people like bite sized information and netflix is cheaper than trips to the cinema, but we are living in a golden age of 3D animated movies where never before have there been so many animation nominees for film awards. Fun facts! Enjoy!
