“I am honoured to contribute my Vietnamese and spiritual heritage influenced by my migrant parents to AOTC. I am honoured that I will be expressing raw emotions and the adversity that many millennials and young adults are sojourning in this period of history, as well as offer a space for you all to heal, be real and feel.”

Yellow - Directed and Edited by Julianne Nguyen commissioned for Multicultural Arts Victoria (MAV) Ahead of the Curve 2021.
The Ahead of the Curve Commissions is for young and emerging artists of colour living around Melbourne, to create new digital artworks that respond to social challenges, including COVID-19. These commissions will empower young storytellers, makers and creators within our diverse communities to create works that:
show their strength and resilience in the face of adversity
explore health and wellbeing and
draw from their lived experiences.
The new digital works created in Ahead of the Curve will be presented online as part of MAV’s Diasporas platform. The Ahead of the Curve commissions will highlight the way the COVID-19 pandemic has compounded inequity and disadvantage for communities of colour in Victoria.

The Ahead of the Curve Commissions was a call out for young and emerging artists of colour living around Melbourne, to create new digital artworks that responded to social challenges, including COVID-19.
Yellow, an experimental and semi-abstract film by Julianne Nguyen @jujus_art_journals for the #AheadoftheCurveCommissions 💜🎞
“Yellow tries to capture ‘resilience’ and an ‘energy’ of our childhood youthful days that we have lost. Using my dad’s recording from his old handy-cam, my impromptu routine of playing instruments in my room and sudden urges of self-reflection, I attempt to encapsulate the power of our own ‘self’.
Yellow is a message for young adults to reflect, remember, return, rebuild and reconnect to what is important to our internal values, our ancestors’ ways and what is in front of us that we may have forgotten pre-COVID days.”
