SCENE 1
Maya and Ian are sitting in the art studio of their dorm residence, working on their mid-term paintings. They have been friends since freshman year of high school and began their first year in college.
Maya: (sitting quietly in front of her easel and her wet canvas) Howâs your painting going?
Ian: (Looks away from his canvas) Itâs fine, I guess. Iâm lowkey over it. I donât know why I chose to paint something complicated. What about you?
Maya: Itâs goingâŠfine. Itâs just time consuming. Iâm sure your still-life painting will turn out great. You could do whatever you want, just freestyle.
Ian: Have you called your mom yet?
Maya: (stops painting and looks down) you know weâre not on speaking terms.
Ian: (Looks at maya with confusion) What? Itâs been three months. (Maya looks back at Ian)
Maya: Listen you donât understand. She made it quite clear that she didnât want to see me again. Iâd ratherâŠleave her be, then cause more problems. It was just so weird. I donât ever remember her being so mad at me.
Ian: Well, she didnât want to support your art. Your passion for it is out of your control. Itâs not your fault. I wouldnât stress too much about it.
Maya: I know itâs just that, we used to tell each other everything, even when I moved for college. But lately sheâs been distant. (picks up the paintbrush and paints aggressively onto canvas)
Ian: (takes the paint brush out of mayaâs hand) Listen, I think youâve done enough painting for today. You tend to take out your emotions on your artwork.
Maya: (Rolls her eyes) isnât that the beauty of it?
Scene 2:
Itâs next week. Maya is in her dorm, lying on her bed and listening to music and receives an expected call.
Maya: (her phone begins vibrating and she answers the phone) Mom?
Mother: Maya. Itâs been a while. You havenât talked to me lately.
Maya:Â Well the last time we talked, you made it clear that you didnât want to hear let alone see me.
Mother: Â I think we should talk about that. I plan on coming to campus soon. Can we meet at that one coffee shop?
Maya: (checks her calendar) Iâm free this Friday. But I have something else going on that day, so we canât spend the entire day together.
Mother: OhâŠwell thatâs fine. I see you soon. Bye. (Hangs up the phone)
[Fast forwards to Friday, day of the meet up. Maya gets ready to meet her mom at the coffee shop. She walks to the shop and sees her mom sitting at a table inside, through the window]
Maya: (takes a deep breath, opens the door to the shop, walks towards the table where her mom is sitting) Mom.
Mother: (looks up at smile and gives her a sad smile) Maya. You look different. Did you cut your hair?
Maya: (takes a seat) Yeah, I did. I cut it the last time I saw you.
Mother: (sighs) Look. I know youâre upset about that, which is why I want to talk about that-
Maya: (Interrupts) No stop. I think I should tell how I feel about that. For one thing, it sucked. It really sucked. (Sucks the inside of her cheeks and takes a deep breath.) I needed to talk to you, but I wasnât sure if I was allowed to reach out because the last time, we were together, you basically pushed me out the door. Iâm sorry, mom, but Iâm not quitting art. Do you really think I could just be civil about this?
Mother: I know itâs out of nowhere and abrupt, but I think itâs very important that I see you.
Maya: RightâŠbecause you only want to see me when it benefits you.
Mother: (shakes her head) thatâs not true-
Maya (coldly interrupts her again) why are you really here? Get to the point, I donât have all day.
Mother: (sighs and begins to talk anxiously) A couple weeks after our fight, I went to see the doctor and she ran some tests and there was something wrong with my lungs. She suggested that I see an oncologist-
Maya: (Interrupts her again, and raises her eyebrows) wait, what in the Jiminy Cricket- whatâs going on here? Are you sayingâŠ
Mother: (slight pause) I have cancer (moment of silence).
Scene 3
Takes place four months after the news. Maya and her mom have been getting along. Her and Ian have been visiting once a month. Maya took a break from painting. The scene takes place in Mayaâs dorm. Maya is on her computer while Ian is watching tv.
Maya: (Looks away from her computer to talk to Ian) I think we should visit my mom today. Itâs been awhile.
Ian: (pauses the tv) yeah, Iâm down. Can we get Raising Canes before on the way?
Maya: (looks at him with disgust) Raising Canes is trash.
Ian: OH COME ON! Itâs not that bad.
Maya: Okay, fine, go get ready.
[Maya and Ian get ready to head to the food restaurant and head to visit Mayaâs Mother. They arrive at the house.]
Maya: (Gets out of the car and observes the house) It looksâŠthe same.
Ian: (Walks towards her and puts his hand on her shoulder.) Just breathe. Letâs head inside. (Both walk together towards the front door and rings the doorbell a couple times)
Maya: hmm. Try knocking. (Ian knocks on the door a couple times and twists the door knob and walks in) Why is her door unlocked? Mom? (slight pause) We bought you some Raising CanesâŠMom?
Ian: Maybe sheâs not home.
Maya: No, her car is here. (Begins walking around and calling her phone)
Ian: I hear ringing from the other room. (He walks into the room where the phone is ringing and next to Mayaâs momâs body.) MayaâŠ(another slight pause) donât come in here. Â
(Maya comes into the room, dropping the food that was once in her hands, now spilled onto the floor. She runs to her motherâs body.) Maya: Mom? Mom? (shakes her and starts to breath rapidly) MOM! PLEASE!
