“Okay,” Betty chirped, tucking her face into the crook of his neck. Jughead’s body heat was quickly warming up her limbs–cold from the long walk in the early morning air–and he smelled absolutely divine. She didn’t have a name for how he smelled, but it made her feel at peace. She could most definitely spend an entire day catching up on sleep with him. “We’ll have to barricade the front door, though. My mom will bring a biblical plague down on us once she gets the message I didn’t show up for class.” The blonde draped one of her arms across her boyfriend’s chest and lazily stroked her fingers up and down his bicep.
Betty’s skin felt cool against his but Jughead didn’t mind in the least. The way that she felt, tucked against his body made him slightly light headed. He couldn’t help the quiet snort that escaped him when Betty mentioned how her mother would feel about her skipping class. He moved and opened one eye to look at her, a small smile on his face, “It might just be worth it,” he said. As her fingers trailed over his bicep, Jughead felt them move closer to his new serpent tattoo where the skin was still tender and scabby and he flinched slightly, worried about what the petite blonde would think of his new ink. He decided not to say anything, to let her find it or not on her own.

Jughead had been up late the night before with the Serpents and he was in a deep sleep with his head covered up when he felt the woman’s weight on his bed. He rolled barely rolled over with a grunt, raising the blanket to tuck it around Betty’s small body as he wrapped his arms around her and pulled her too him. It was crazy how much he had missed his girl in just the time they were apart. He still hadn’t opened his eyes, “I don’t want to wake up,” he mumbled against her hair, “can we just stay here today?” he asked her, squeezing her gently.

“I brought donuts,” Betty called out, shutting the trailer door behind her. Normally she’d knock, but she was trying to prove a point. A spare key outside, while convenient for her, meant anybody could waltz right into Jughead’s house. A fact that caused her a lot of stress seeing as there was a serial killer on the loose. One that had an unhealthy obsession with her and had threatened Jughead in the recent past. “Sadly, not from Pop’s.” The blonde set the box of donuts with two coffees dangerously perched on top onto the small kitchen table. “Juggie,” she tried again, padding down the hallway to his bedroom. She knew her boyfriend wasn’t much of a morning person, but it seemed like before class was the only time they were both free. Not going to school together anymore really sucked. “Wake up,” she purred, climbing onto the squeaky mattress and curling herself around the lump she presumed was her boyfriend under the covers.

Betty hummed in agreement, tightening her fists in his shirt. Asking Jughead to help her revive the Blue and Gold was one of the smartest decisions she had ever made; and not just because he was a talented writer and helped solve Jason’s murder, but because he had inspired her to be a stronger person. She was no longer the love struck school girl who allowed herself to be bullied by her mother. She was an independent women who searched for the truth no matter how painful it might be, and had an incredible boyfriend who stood by her side and helped keep her sane among all the chaos in Riverdale. It was a bit jarring to think that if she’d never convinced Jug to work on the school paper with her, they may never have gotten to know each other outside of their mutual friendship with Archie. They had only been together for a few months, but she couldn’t picture her life without him as her partner. “We’re a beautiful couple,” she compromised, her heart swelling too big for her chest at the sight of his blush. She wanted to trace the soft pink color with her lips. Instead, she returned his kiss with equal force and snaked her arms around his waist, bringing them closer together. “I’m in love with you,” Betty whispered against his mouth in between kisses. It felt good to finally be able to say the words she’d been feeling since he’d kissed her scarred hands at Pop’s after his disastrous surprise party.
The feeling of Betty’s hands fisted in his shirt urged Jughead on. He slid one hand around behind her head and into her hair, pulling her deeper into the kiss. As he heard her whisper against his lips, he sucked in a breath. He broke the kiss for a moment, resting his forehead against hers, his mind and heart raced as he thought about what she had just said. Over the last few months, Jughead’s feelings for Betty had grown almost daily and if he was being honest with himself, there were a lot of moments that those feelings terrified him. He loved his family and he loved his friends but until Betty, he had never been in love with someone, never felt so connected to another person and he knew that he couldn’t ever live without her. “Say it again?” he asked her, leaning back only slightly to look in her eyes and making sure that she could see all of the love and the vulnerability that he was feeling in that moment. “Please Betts, just say that one more time.”

The heavy weight she’d felt in her stomach since the arrival of the Serpents finally began to dissipate as Jughead assured her he would protect their relationship. In its place, warmth began to blossom in her chest and some of that giddiness she’d felt after he’d told her he loved her returned. “I suppose that’s true,” she practically purred as he continued to stroke her face, “I was able to sway you into working at the Blue and Gold with me. You’re welcome, by the way. I helped you beef up your college applications.” Betty stared up at him with love, amusement, and a tiny bit of remaining nerves in her eyes. He was heartbreakingly handsome and, not for the first time, she mentally kicked herself for not realizing it sooner. She’d been so obsessed with Archie and his Prince Charming appeal that she’d completely overlooked the only other person in all of her fondest childhood memories: A dark haired, blue eyed boy in a knitted crown who was secretly living a Greek tragedy. “You’re quite beautiful,” she informed him, tipping her head up to place a kiss on his chin.
Jughead could see the blonde relaxing ever so slightly causing his own tension to dissipate minutely. He could feel the warm breath on his face as she spoke and she smelled like strawberries; being this close to her made Jughead feel slightly intoxicated. He couldn’t help that his smile widened a bit, “well I can definitely say that joining the Blue and Gold was one of the best decisions that I have ever made...” his eyes watching her’s intently, “but not necessarily because of my college applications.” Jughead was certain that if he hadn’t started working with Betty on the paper then they never would have started sleuthing together; and if that had never happened, then he isn’t sure that he ever would have found the nerve to tell Betty how he felt about her. He could feel her gaze burning into his, the look in her eyes made his knees weak. Her next words caused his face to turn a slight shade of pink, “you’re the beautiful one Betts,” he replied quietly. When her lips touched his skin, he felt his skin tingle; then with his hands still on her face, he leaned down and pressed his lips gently but forcefully to hers.

His words reminded her of the conversation she’d had with her parents a couple days prior– when they warned her against publishing her article about Jug’s dad, and that attacks on the Southside had increased since they were being blamed for the town’s heroin problem. Perhaps he was right and he would be safer with the Serpents watching his back when she couldn’t. The thought both warmed her and made her stomach turn. There were so many uncertainties surrounding the gang. She no longer believed the Serpents were the monsters the North claimed them to be, but she did know from first hand experience that they were wild and rowdy and some of them did lead lives of crime. Her heart hurt at the idea of him getting in over his head and having to do something he regretted. “I think you’re one of the smartest and most morally just people I know, and if you think getting closer to the Serpents is our best next move–” she untangled her hand from his and curled both fists in his grey sweater– “then I trust you.” Betty smiled softly up at him. “I just need you to be careful. We don’t know much about them, and my parents said that violence against the Serpents has increased since the drug ring in Riverdale was discovered. Until we figure out who is really pushing the drugs, it’s probably only going to get worse. I’m not sure how many people my speech tonight actually got through to,” she sighed.
As Jughead watched Betty’s face as a war raged in her head, his mind flashed back to the day that her locker was vandalized making bile rise in his throat for a second; he quickly realized he would do anything to keep her safe. His eyes searched her face as she started speaking again; how could someone so good and so pure want to be with him? Why did she have so much trust in him? He knew that his questions vulnerabilities were visible in his eyes and for once, he didn’t care to hide them; he wanted Betty to see into his soul. When she wrapped her small hands into his sweater, Jughead felt his heart flip, his hands quickly reaching up to cup her face gently. Instinctively, his thumbs started gently rubbing against her cheeks, “Betts,” he finally said, “I promise you that I will not do anything to risk this,” he paused and took a breath, “to risk us.” He returned her small smile, “I think you probably touched more people tonight than you can possibly realize, you can be pretty convincing when you believe in something.” He finally gave her a tiny smirk and raised his eyebrow at her.

Jughead let himself take a breath when Betty turned her hand over in his, relaxing just slightly. Up until the blonde spoke, her next words caused his heart to swell and break at the same time. She wanted to protect him, no one had ever really cared enough to protect him. He smiled slightly, thinking she could be right..in general, he was significantly more scared of upsetting her than he was of upsetting the serpents. He looked down at their intertwined hands and sighed, "I'm thinking that they may not be the worst allies to have with everything that's going to be happening soon, especially since I'll be living and going to school on their turf" he shrugged and then looked up, locking eyes on her, "but I'm also thinking that I will do anything for you...so if you want me to give the jacket back, then that's what I'll do." He chewed on the inside if his jaw as he searched her face, "what are you thinking?" He finally asked, giving her hand a small squeeze, taking a small step closer to her.

He would almost swear he could hear the wheels spinning in Betty’s mind, she looked uncomfortable as she looked at the jacket. He snorted at her attempt at a joke, leave it to Betty to try and joke. “yeah, I mean-” he trailed off, his eyes following the blonde’s hands as she smoothed out her clothes, something he knew was a nervous habit, “they will protect me if I’m on their side…I guess,” he shrugged, finally taking a step closer to Betty. “Betts,” her name came out barely above a whisper as he tried to get an exact reading on her thoughts. He raised his hand, gently touching the back of one of hers, hoping to soothe her.
Betty was about to plaster a hollow smile on her face, and save the over-analyzing for when she was alone in her pastel bedroom, when she reminded herself that this was Jughead. They talked through difficult topics and faced problems side by side. The feel of his fingers on her skin had her instinctively twisting her hand around to intertwine their fingers. “I can protect you,” she countered with conviction. “Elizabeth Cooper with a plan is far scarier than any biker gang could ever hope to be.” She ran the fingertips of her free hand over the worn leather. “Tell me what you’re thinking,” Betty requested softly. The image of him laughing in the Southside high cafeteria played over in her mind. Perhaps he wanted to join the Serpents. She’d seen the infamous insignia on several of his new comrades’ backs. How could she blame him if he did? He was bullied and treated like a pariah at Riverdale high. If he wanted to find that sense of social belonging he’d been deprived of for so long, who was she to stand in his way? Her fear of losing him to the Southside shouldn’t outweigh his happiness.

“Me either,” she agreed breathlessly, her mind struggling to process how it was possible for a night to turn so quickly. One moment they were pulling each other’s clothes off, and then the next she was watching the boy she loves be welcomed into the arms of Riverdale’s very own Sons of Anarchy. “Better than my mom, I suppose,” she tried to joke, barely managing to pull her gaze from the jacket to meet Jughead’s stare. “Or at least safer. For you, anyway.” Betty smoothed out the wrinkles on her still half-tucked shirt with her hands.

What happens next?//Bughead
Jughead stood in shock on the porch of his father’s trailer as he watched the Southside Serpents walk away. He looked down at the leather jacket that held gingerly in his hands, trying to process what had just happened. After a beat, he heard a small sound from beside him and turned to see Betty standing in the door of the trailer. He quietly turned and walked inside, shutting the door before turning to Betty but not quite making eye contact; and clearing his throat, “well I didn’t see that coming,” he finally said, walking over and laying the jacket on the couch before finally looking up to see what her reaction was.
