What new skills have you learnt in this project
Throughout this project I have learnt a wide range of different techniques and workshops to produce outcomes. During week one of my offsite we had a photography task and the aim was to get a selection of photos of buildings, looking at a range of angles of perspectives. This for me was one of the most useful offsite tasks because after complaining that I wasn’t on a photography course. I actually really enjoyed going around town and it made you look up and notice things you would usually miss when casually going out. It also helped for weeks after to create compositions and glitched images. I also used some of my photos I took to create my zine.
West Suffolk House. Bury St Edmunds.
Name at list 3 artists that had a big influence on you and discuss why? Jon Burgerman-
The week before our first week of college was to research Jon Burgerman. His doodle artwork and use of limited colour palettes I really enjoyed researching. This influenced me and my work because it made me realise that sometimes keeping things simple is ok. You can make something you are unsure about look good. The idea of care free doodling is a pleasant thought to me as I enjoy slipping in and out of drawing in my spare time.
Hattie Stewart-
Another doodle artist. Her work is energetic and fun from doodle-bombs on magazine covers to sticker designs. Hattie Stewart’s work has taught me that sometimes your artwork doesn’t have to be super serious and sometimes just adding highlights and a face to things can make them look presentable and have a less stressful vibe to it. The main thing I have taken from her work is that you should always be enjoying and even if you are not you can enjoy the satisfaction at the end knowing that you finished your piece.
Which of your designs worked particularly well and explain why?
A design of mine I think worked particularly well is my photography. Not just the photos themselves but all of the outcomes I have used them in. Compositions and glitched imagery as well as being the core part of my zine because I had spent time and put in the effort in this offsite task has in a way become a backbone for the project. My
glitched images in my opinion were especially effective because it was all about messing up the image and distorting it initially which I enjoyed and thrived at because I tend to have a good nature with messing things up somehow.
Cupola house.Bury St Edmunds.
Angel Hotel. Bury St Edmunds.
What would you have changed in your work if given more time? –
If I had been given more time I would have ensured that I produced a more substantial number of outcomes. Revisiting the workshops in order to create more final outcomes so my portfolio would be more full. With how unpredictable and problematic this year has been, time has been limited. One thing I would have done differently is to check over my work after finishing to avoid spelling errors or work not being embedded and lost. I had a problem with my posters and postcards. The word thanatophobia had been misspelled thanatophobia. It was only one letter but because it was so close to the end of the project it really stressed out. I ended up just redoing everything on the sunday before printing.
Two out of my six postcards have incorrect spelling.
I corrected this so this is the rejected set.
Overall, how successful do you feel this project was for you? – Did
For me I feel this project has been very successful for me. I would say that overall I have enjoyed this project more than my previous because it gave a lot of freedom. I enjoyed the Don’t panic portion of the project because it involved digital and studio work unlike my last course which was more digital work this course gives a mix of the two. The postcards I really enjoyed doing because you had a colour palette that restricted you but you decide how the letters are edited. My outcomes I am quite proud of. I think that my strong part is all of the photography I did. It is ironic because at the start I didn;’t want to do photography but now it is the end of this project it has been my favourite offsite task. I am not %100 happy with my outcomes because there is always something I will notice that I could have done differently or better. If it wasn’t for the worldwide pandemic and lockdowns I would have probably put all my effort into it but I think at times I used it as a bit of an excuse to slack off a little bit during my offsite. Despite all of the odds that were stacked against me I managed to refine my outcomes and get them all printed in time for assessment week.

Posters
I produced another poster because my other one had some font which I didn’t embedded. It also looks a bit odd, So I decided to make a simpler one.
First I started off by adding one of my book pages into my photoshop page. I set the blend mode to be diffrence which made the page look like it was old which could symbolise how things after death get forgotten and lost.
I added in a blank book page on the normal mode just to give the poster some text to fill the background.
I then added my raven Illustration and put the oppacity down a bit to make it look like a shadow.
Using my word, With the correct spelling i copied it covering the whole page. This is similliar to the type on my John Wick poster
.
I then set all of the type to be on the blend mode soft light so it looked a bit faded and more like a shadow.

The postcard disater
My second postcard I would recreate this using my new colours pallete. I would instead make it so it wasn’t so dark.
I added my skull behind my type lowering it’s oppacity so it looked like a shadow
Unlike the other one I have edited the text by simply using the marquee tool to split it in half.
I changed the colour of the text and added one of my book pages to fill the background..
For my third post card I glitched the type using the marquee tool and just shifting parts of the letters to the side.
my plan was to create this postcard as best as I could.
i changed the colours on the letter to be my two chosen ones. I used my hourglass ilustration and set it onto hard mix so you can only see the part that overlap with the letters.
One of my postcard was actually correct. I jsut had to recreate it with my new colour pallete.
After changing the colours it would simply be a case of copy and pasting everything from that poster onto this poster.
And just like that I had my 4th postcard.
For my 5th postcard I would just be recreating this but with my new colour pallete. The insructions can be found in a previous post.
I wasn’t able to get the exact effect because they are diffrent colours and interact with linear light diffrently.
For my last one I wanted to keep it super simple to stray away from the others which might be a bit ambitious.
My background colour was my second colour so I added black as a third colour.
Once I turned both the layers on the letters looked 3D. I thought it looked very pleasing as it looked like a set of typeography I had seen off pintrest.

The postcard disater.
On my previous card I noticed that I had spelt Thanatophobia wrong by one letter. Instead of just ingoring the error I have decided to push all of the error ones to one side and create a fresh set.
By going to coolors I generated my colour pallete. The ones with the padlocks are my two selected colours.
I took my plain scan into photoshop. Here using the magic wand tool I would get rid of the background and take a letter O so I can corrected the Thanata part.
Once I corrected the super obnoxious error I was good to go. I would only need to do it once as long as I keep a clear copy.
Using the paint bucket tool I added in myy two selected colours on two copies of the word.
I took my illustration of the candle from one of my dud postcards and just switched the colours.
I added in two circles one of each of my colours.
This postcard is the same just in a diffrent colour pallete and spelt Incorrectly so I repeated the process to create one that was correct.

Method 2:Photoshop
You can use the scanners to get the wavey effect on your type but you can also doing it using photoshop.
Firstly I took my type into a plane sheet and went filter liquify.
Here I am able to adjust the size of the waves and the amout of waves the letters have.
After I played around with the settings this is the effect that I ended up with which is simialliar to the one done on the scanner.
The problem was the letters looked to clean because they were digitially done so I added a grainy scan background.
The finished outcome of this technique,I changed the letters to white so they would be more visible on the dark background.

Making a zine:Part 2
Today using both photoshop and Indesign I created the reamaining pages I would need for it to be a complete zine.
One of my pages wasn’t embedded so I had to redo it. I create all the shapes in photoshop then placing them in frames in indesign.
By going to file then place it would allow you to select the file you wanted to place into your Indesign page.
By creating a circle in photoshop over the image I wanted to use then turning down the oppacity of it allowed the image to be seen through it. I then used the quick selection tool to select the circle and copy and paste it onto a clear layer.
I also repeated the process to create a yellow one. I ended up using the same image for both circles but both in diffrent colours I then Flipped one to be the oppisite of it’s opposing counterpart.
Fortunatly the only thing that got lost were the circles. Which I recreated here effectivly the rectangels were gradients remained there so I didn’t have to go into doing gradients.
For this page I used my photograph of the cornhill shooping centre in town. I used the marquee tool to cut out a circle to be part of my zine.
I kept one orginal and the other I invereted, I have put the orginal circle on a inverted version of the cornhill shopping centre and doing the oppsite on the opposing page.
For my final page I just replicated my first page.

Don’t panic:Postcards
Today by using the scanners as a starting point we scanned in some typeography moving the page around as it scanned to create a wavey effect.
This is one of the many scans I got I did multiple because this one is too wavey and to me was unpleasnt for my eyes to look at as it gave me a headache.
This one I did by just moving it at the bottom side to side which is why the bottom half is effected and not the top. This was also one of the errors I made while scanning.
I did eight scans and decided that none of them would be perfect and that I could improve on them by digitially editing them.
Using the site coolors I generated the color pallete I would use. The ones with the padlocks on are my selected set of colours.
I tested them out on one of my typeography scans and simply using the paint bucket to change the colouring of the letters. I decided not to use this pallete because it look to christmassy and didn’t fit the theme of the fear of death.
Going back onto coolors I genrated a second set of colours. I went for a brighter red and a dark blue. I instantly choose the red because it is the colour of blood and just generally fits well. I choose the blue because it is a more darker colour and instead of having two bright colours wouldn’t overwhelm the design.
I then did the same as I did before and put the colour sonto the letters. I really liked the two colour it remind me of old typeography from the 80′s that would be found on a road sign. to advertise a cafe.
I began to think more about the placement of my colours on the letters aswell as added black as the third colour.
This would be the start of my first postcard. I just duplicated the lettering and set the other set to be the other colour and putting the lighter colour at the back and lighter at the front made it look more 3D.
I added one of my pages from the penguin book and changed the blend mode on the typeography to so you can see through it. The letters look like they are made out of some sort of gel.
Ony my second postcard I tried just adding some circles putting them on the multiply blend mode so you would see the letters through them.
I needed something I could put in the background to help fill the negative space, i took the candle from my poster and changed the colour to be the ones of my colour pallete.
I added two circlles one on the letter PHO on the other on the letter BIA to spell phobia.
For this one I didn’t screenshot as it was just repeating the process I have already done. I took the hourglass for my poster and reused it putting it on hard mix so you can only see the part that go over the letters. I also glitched the letters a little bit using the rectangular Marquee tool.
For this one I didn’t do alot to the letters. The one thing I did was slice them down the middle using the Marquee tool. I copied the typeography so I had two copies one, of each colour.
When both of the layers were turned on together the letter looked 3D and bold but it looked too similliar to my other one that the letter looked like gel. So I played around with the blend modes to see how that would change how they colours interact.
I switched one of the copies to be liner light an it crated a black version of the letter.
I drew a rectangle and duplicated it to look like bars over the typeography. This is the concept that after death people can be trapped in hell like being trapped in a prison.
I didn’t add anything in the background for this one because I was so involved with the text that it would interfere with the blend modes losing it’s effect and appeal.

Don’t panic envelope
The day started in the studio where we genrated hand drawn ideas. I started off by using the carbon paper to trace a skull. I tried to be creative by adding a hourglass into the right eye but I later removed this.
I also traced a skeleton using tracing paper and a purple fine liner as I did not have a black one avaliable.
Another carbon print I did was of a raven wing. I only did one because I would be able to copy and paste it when I was digitially editing to make two.
Here I took it to photoshop and flipped the copy horizontial paseing it to make two sets of wings.
I spent a long time changing the modes and oppacity and postion of everything but here is my final design. I twas coming to the end of the day and I didn’t screenshot a huge part of the process so I will have to go back at some point and do that. I just find mondays session the hardest ones especially now being in the studio for half a day and mac room the other half. When I am at home I put my screenshots into a tumblr post as I work so I do not forget.

Creating a zine
Using Indesign I began to create my pages for my zine. Using some of my photography and digitially editing it.
For this one I had just taken the Image into photoshop and put a rectangle and put it on the blend mode multiply. When I placed the image into Indesign I set it to be a circle. I changed the background to be the oppsite colour of the photo. I also added a gradient to the background.
For this one I simply just got two of the image and inverted them and made them into one and added a black background.
This one is rather facisnating. It is of the same building but the photo is the glitched imagery verson and the background is the orginal

Don’t Panic packs
A colection of don’t panic packs. These contain promotinal flyers aswell as sometimes a poster based on what the pack is about.
Don’t panic is art of creating promotinal packs covering a range of diffrent topics. They are usually used the promote events that are going on, They are also used in uni buildings where you are not allowed to decorate. The packs themselves cotain a flyer to promote the event and sometimes some freebies. The main thing is the A2 limited edition poster which comes in every pack.
The posters can be brought of there website from for £10.
‘Thee kids are not alright’ Is a A2 poster which would of been in one of the issues of the don’t panic packs. He has used a fine art graffiti style.A sketch of a persons face likely a teenager. It doesn’t say what it is about but I would imagine this would of been in a pack about mental health. There are some red strokes which could represent violence which happens amongst the young.
'Forgive us our trespassing’ Is one of the A2 posters from one of the don’t panic packs. Created by Banksy it is in his usual graffiti style. It is of a kneeling boy with a bucket of paint and he is praying. This could be because he thinks he is just inociently creating art but thinks he might get in serious trouble. The aim of this was to encourage children to create art.
‘Subterfuge’ Is one of the A2 posters from one of the don’t panic packs. Disney gives a unrealstic view on life and love. In this drawing Snow white uses her charm and beauty to reach her goal of ‘Brain food’ The images was hand drawn in photoshop and had colour added to it.
‘Tears in reign ’By penny. This one of the A2 posters featured in a don’t panic pack previously. It shows a stack of £50 notes. A magnifying glass has be put over them to zoom in to see a sketch of part of the queen with a tear running down her face. I think this is because the £50 note is no longer in use and cannot be used.
Machine by Scott English is a complex design which at first glance can seem simple and you first realise it is the shape of a heart but as you look into it you see there are diffrent sections much like how a heart has diffrent parts. He combined the working of man made machines with the human heart to show that is like a device that keeps the human alive.

Moodboard
I collected images related to my fear aswell as geting the technical name for the fear and puting it in the middle. The images surround it to show they are all related to it. I especiouly like the candle being blown as it shows the last part of life before the end.

FEARS
Using the time in between my offsite and onsite I began to work on my second posted based on my fears. I used photoshop to create it as I do not have Illustrator.
I used this raven sillhoute that I had previously back from the lockdown back in march when I started up my drawing page so I did alot of drawing.
By double clicking the layer that the raven was on it gave the option to edit the settings. I was only intrest in adding a drop shadow. Here I can change the size spread and distance of the shadow.
Doing that and adjusting the oppacity allowed me to make the raven look like a shadow as if there was one standing on the arwork.
I then added my pages. I used a diffrent blend mode for each page. I played around with them testing what worked together. Some blend modes appeared to not doing anything but the things about blen modes is when you turn on all the layers they will blend into eachother to create a new effect.
This is what it looked like once I turned all 3 layers on. I liked this combanation because it shows a darkness creeping on the page which can be seen as death. The holy cross still appears light to show life after death.
Once I turned on the layer that had the Raven it better showed what I was going for. The raven is a symbalism of death but overlaps with the holy cross which is the light seen in life after death. The part that intreact with the cross appear lighter.
I layered up the word Thanatophobia (The fear of death) I also used diffrent blend modes so the word wouldn’t just blend into the background.
This is the outcome when I switched on all of the layers. I am unsure if that is the best place for the text but I found if I moved it, It would turn dark and blend into the background.
10/11/2020
By using this image from my mood board I would put it on a seperate layer and haver a layer over drawing on that line to create a copy of it.
The background is black so I have selected a diffrent colour so I can see what I am doing.
I have drawn the smoke on a diffrent layer so if I needed to make any adjustments it would be easier.
I neated up the lines on the smoke and adding a melting wax effect to the candle. I have sectioned the smoke so when I turn it into a grayscale image I can use diffrent tones.
I changed the mode by going Image<Mode then selecting grayscale.
All colour come out diffrent tones of grey now.
Using the rectangular Marque tool I cut out some of my pages which would become the background for my poster.
By going to Image<Adjustments I inverted the page.
My second page I changed the blend mode to be hard light.
Diffrent blend modes mix together difrently so I try to use a selection on my posters.
3 blend modes later and a invert this is what I ended up with. The candle even though it is being blown out/Put out still appears bright to represent the final breath of life.
The final outcome.

FEARS
In todays session we drawed a illustration to show our fear. I decided to draw a hour glass to represent time moving and how it doesn’t stop and will eventually run out.
We started off by making the image a template and a layer above it so we could trace over the top of it
Here is the image I used.
Using the brush tool to draw over the top allowed me to create my own copy .
When making strokes if you stopped it would create a path. These are created whenever you start a new line.
When making strokes if you stopped it would create a path. These are created whenever you start a new line.
I played around which diffrent blend options. I scanned in multiple pages of my book and overlapped them changing there blend options so you can see the pages behind the front page.
My final outcome. On the page I have highlighted words to do with death and drawn a dove at the bottom to represent freedom. In the top right corner is a holy cross to represent heaven. The hour glass represent time and how it runs out but after death it can be flipped back over.

Week 2 Photography. Offsite.
For week 2 we were tasked to photographs of reflections. i used a mirror and some cd’s. Although you are looking one way it is reflecting what is oppsite you. My favourite one is of the cd’s taking at a angel so it gets in the slide but the space between them slices it in half.

Week 1 Photography. Offsite
For week one offsite we were tasked to get photographs of archetectiual buildings. Taking photos from diffrent anglels. Originially I was not really looking foward to this task but after talking to my father he gave me some insight and told me that I was in the most ideal place for this task as Bury does have alot of historical places. So that evening we set off around town getting photgraphs of local buildings. This ended up being my favourite task funnily enough because afterwards you get to see your work and know that it was you who postioned the photo. I ender up with about 180 photos including the dud ones so I defiently had no problem get my 20. Here is 5 of some place you might recongise from Bury St Edmunds.
