FREESTYLE 101: Learn How to Freestyle Dance
Freestyle is about a mentality!
The moves you do, don’t matter, it’s how you do it and how you interact with the music.
In reality, dance should be the visual representation of music. If someone were to draw what the music sounded like, they would be drawing what your freestyle looks like.
  Things that help me:
-You have to understand that musicality is the most important thing. If you understand what is going on in the music, your dance will not yield the results you may desire. Really spend time listening to a great variety of music and begin to pick it apart. A majority of people just listen to music straight-on, but in reality, music in in MANY different layers. The more you can pick apart the layers, the more options you have to articulate with your body, which can really set you apart from your peers.
-Focus on some kind of emotion and try to show that through your dance. For example, if you focused on something like fear or anger you may have more aggressive movements
OR
-think of portraying a certain character, and try to get into that character’s mind and somehow express their movements. If I was a ninja I would have quick, agile movements while still exercising great stealth.
-You’ve heard many times, but technique is essential. No matter how good your musicality is, you don’t want your dancing to look sloppy because of poor technique. Literally practice your technique for about 50% of the time you practice. Good technique + good musicality = the key to really good freestyling.
-You need to have your own distinct style. People don’t like to watch everybody do the same exact thing. When you consider dancing, there are tons of styles such as, tango, waltz, ballet, hip hop, jazz and countless others. Now certain dances appeal to different people, whether you’re a hip hop street dancer or the stuff old ladies do in water aerobics class in the YMCA. Having a unique style is kind of like DNA in the sense that it sets you apart from the many other dancers in the world, and since dance is an art form, unique expression is imperative.  Now, how do you find that style? What I found was best for me to find that style was to set up a camera and record myself. I would put on music that got me in a really good mood for dancing and close my eyes and focus on character or emotion. Then, I would try to visually represent the music with freestyle. After watching your recordings, you will start to notice that your body has certain natural tendencies which is where you build the beginnings of your style. Then, you have to put in personal time trying to figure out all the different aspects of your style and truly mastering it.
Recap:
The most important things to focus on are style, technique, and musicality. Then you should be on your way to being an amazing freestyle dancer.

On Friday, I decided to also dance to a song I've never heard and see how it turned out. I honestly think this one is better than the dubstep one I just posted.

Why Stretching Should be Your Best Friend
Sometimes when you think you’re saving yourself time, you are really not. I pretty much skipped stretching before I danced or exercised for a month in order to save precious time thanks to the stack of homework on my desk. Besides a little soreness, I never really felt any ill effects from this.
Enter handstands.
At break dance club, I noticed some people had the ability  to do handstands and headstands. While I was not likely to use them in any of my dance moves, they were a neat skill to learn. I just went straight into them and BOOM! I pulled a muscle in my leg. Physically, I was as useless as a competitive underwater basket weaver (Yeah, I know, this is an overused joke.)
So yeah kids, you should stretch before you do any kind of physical activity because you are one bad move away from doing permanent damage. I probably will have to contact my ISP mentor about some really good stretches that I can do daily.
***Side note: Not only is stretching essential before physical exercise, it can be a great daily ritual. It helps deal with stress, gets your metabolism going, and helps your body wake up and be efficient for the rest of the day.
****I try to follow the stretches on this link:  http://www.livestrong.com/article/356519-dance-stretches-to-increase-flexibility/ . In general, Livestrong has good physical tips on keeping your body in it’s most efficient state.
*****More stretching guides that are harder in my honest opinion: http://www.shapefit.com/stretching-exercises.html and http://www.livestrong.com/article/375727-what-are-some-good-advanced-stretches/

How dance is starting to interact with my other interests.
Since I was little, the fine arts have really meant a lot to me. When I was little I would act like any character I liked in television shows or in the movies. My parents would jokingly call me a “drama king” because I was never truly myself. This might have possibly inspired my later interests in film.
As I started the sixth grade, I enrolled in band in where I began to get involved music. Music was an excellent way to capture in life through your ears and I was consumed by it. I would practice to no end in order to become a better musician. Also, in middle school I became interested in film and began to learn as much as I could about it.
Even though theatre, band, and film are all subcategories of fine arts, I didn’t really see how they would relate to dance. Of course I would find a way to do so.
My close friend Chris started talking to me about writing songs together over Thanksgiving break and I was very interested because at home I was always making small songs to pass time. We decided we would create a song, along with a dance and music video to compliment this. As we began to write the thoughts of an album began to float out there which was  daunting but very cool.
What is even cooler is the fact that I have almost come full circle in terms of the fine arts. I have almost hit every single category, but now I’m finally putting the pieces together. It seems like this is the culmination of the fine arts in my childhood. It is truly an amazing thing to be able to reflect upon.

Throwback Thursday: Joining Break Club
I recently joined break dancing club to break a major fear that I have. The idea of performing in front of people scares me a ton. I believe that if I surround myself with a community of people who share similar interests, I will slowly learn how to break out of this performing shell. I can already begin to see slight improvements in this and I’m able to show my friends some of things I have been working on.
Another aspect that excites me about the club is the ability to learn off of others. While this club is called break dancing club, it does not solely focus on just that. We try to learn routines with each other to famous pop songs as well as work on our improvisational dancing skills. I personally feel like improv will take time for me due to my performance fears. Almost every single member of the club is interested in a different styles of dance and don’t seem to mind sharing this knowledge with others. My goal is to learn a little something from everyone before the year is over.
It helps to learn and practice routines with others as well as share ideas, which makes break dance club one of the neatest clubs at Westwood. Through this club, it can noticed that dance is not just an activity or art form, it is culture, and I’m very proud that my peers created this club to promote such a community. It really goes to show that even a school that puts much of its focus on academics can have flourishing creativity and fine arts.
1 year later: It's amazing what a difference this club has made in my life. I'm more confident and healthier than ever, and I've been working very hard to achieve all my dance related goals.

The Journey Continues On...
Dear Readers,
Going into Mr. Warrior 2014, I was not sure what to expect. Of course part of me really desired to win, but more importantly, as I mentioned in the "Why do I dance?" post (http://journeyofafreestyledancer.tumblr.com/post/67828850611/why-do-i-dance), I truly desired to reach my goals of exorcising my demons that have plagued me for years. Like I said, I truly believed dancing was like my super power that I could use to fight them off.
On the night of the event, they announced the five finalists names, and I was not included and I was initially washed over in disappointment. I felt like all my hard work had gone towards nothing. Luckily that feeling did not last long.
You see, I was performing among 10 of the most amazing, talented, and ballsiest guys at Westwood high school, and I was extremely blessed and fortunate just to be able to say I participated with the future leaders of our world. As I said earlier: "the winner is will rightfully deserve the title because I’m competing with some of the school’s most talented people at one of the best schools in the nation. I’m very proud that I get to share the stage with those 9 amazing guys." If any of you guys read this, I just want to congratulate you guys on your amazing performances and a big congratulations goes out to the winner, Zach Coles.
However, I realized I failed to destroy my demons. These demons were a low amount of self confidence, my past bullying, ability to achieve things, and the biggest demon of all was my issues with my body image coming from my struggle to lose weight. Still, the demons did fade that night. Even though I didn't win, Mr Warrior provided some of the most amazing memories and something even more important, a desire to work even harder and bring even cooler and better performances for you guys. I realized, I use dance as a means to fight these demons off, and improve myself as a person. Now, I believe my demons will never die because I use dance to fight them off, and if I ever successfully got rid of them, I would not need dance anymore, and I love dance too much to quit. So, the journey continues onwards towards even better and even greater things, and I can't wait to start working towards that. Let's go.
  Sincerely,
Aditya
P.S. Thanks for giving me the chance to perform in front of all you guys, it was an exhilerating, and unforgettable feeling. Look forward to a new YouTube channel with new vlogs and dances.

The weekend before the biggest performance of my life.
5 days left seperate me from my Mr. Warrior performance.
Now obviously my injury to my knee was a slight setback but I was finally medically cleared today, but I needed some motivation, and I received a heavy dose of it when I got a quick message from a professional dancer called El Tiro.
El Tiro was on America's Got Talent with his crew called the Body Poets which was started by one of the Jabbawockeez named Kevin Brewer. He has been a back up dancer for T-Pain and has started a charity called Dance Saves Lives. All in all, he's a pretty cool guy.
So, this is what he said:
Hey Aditya,
Thanks for reaching out best of luck in your upcoming performance. I just finished watching your video and I'd be happy to give you back some criticism to help you improve your dance. The first thing I want to say is I admire your stage atmosphere of confidence, it is an important element of freestyle that drives success. I think one concept you can work on is transition and flow. it seems at times with your arm waving everything is very rushed and the same pace. If you wave from a fast, to a slow, to a medium pace you can create a different dynamic of levels with the same moves. As opposed to just waving fast, fast, fast. Sometimes when you are doing dance moves so fast the audience doesn't get to appreciate all the little intricacies. A lot of your moves are based around your arms, it seems to be your comfort zone everyone has one. A comfort zone is defined by the place where you dance the most. I would encourage you to try dancing outside of using your arm waves, like doing robotic moves, gliding, footwork, using your chest to hit. Overall you are doing a great job and I have confidence you will continue to do well. Let me know how the show goes you will kill it!
El Tiro
I had initially messaged him when I hurt my knee and was feeling mentally defeated. Thanks to him taking a few minutes out of his day to respond to my message, I feel like I have the ability to get back on track and train extra hard for these next five days. Here we go.
