Intersectionality, who gets to chose what group, why?

As this is social media it is dangerous as a journalist to write personal thoughts or feelings on certain topics. With that said, I will say the one piece of work this week that caught my engagement the most was intersectionality. The problem is when there are stereotype groups, as that is what it is at heart, to form sects. No matter what the group may be, someone will always feel left out. I believe that’s because, in a nation like the United States, we are a huge mingling melting pot. Everyone has a little bit of everything, or a vast majority, in them. Me for example, I’m half Puerto Rican and Half Irish. I look white, but I have to mark down Hispanic on all of my EEOC documents. As that is who I am. I’m outcasted by Hispanics because I look like my Irish father. My children, well along with being Irish and Puerto Rican, they are German and Italian as that is what their father, my husband is. None of them look the same. Ranging from dark complexions and features to light. Genes are rather interesting that way. So what group would they fit in? All? None? Some? Why? Why not? Who gets to decide? At the end of the day, we are all American, born and raised. We are all human - all over the globe. Research doesn't seem to back up the claims of radicals. It actually disproves their claims. So, as a journalist, I wonder why there is such a thing called intersectionality still? Maybe, it’s to push a political agenda. And it’s working. Where did it originate? Well, I guess we might be chasing that answer for a while. Right?

As a daughter and granddaughter of a very deep line of Military men and women, it slightly angers me that the Steelers made a retired Army member apologize for being the only member of the team to stand for the Anthem outside of the locker room.

It can be scary to talk to our young children about race, racism and racial divides. Even from a bi-racial family. But they are conversations we need to have.
