It’s for my thg fanfiction, and the song doesn’t come in for like 20 chapters but I’m planning ahead. Thoughts? I’ve never ever written a song before but I thought it’s worth a shot

They pluck us like apples, so sweet on the bough

So pure in their hands, but will that matter now?

They cheer as they seize us, the trees have been pruned

But what’s left to grow, when they harvest too soon?

They sharpen and shape us, with tough hands of steel

But are we much better, or just seem less real?

Oh, we’re treated like predators, die like their prey.

But what’s left to be when our truth’s locked away?

They watch as we’re broken, and torn at the seams

Is the price we pay right, for some old shattered dreams?

They’ll strip us of feeling, we wont even cry

But what’s left to bleed, when the river runs dry?

They tell us to thank them, for letting us stay

But what’s left of us, when the coal wastes away?

Oh, diamond’s they glimmer, and flicker like flames

But what’s left to burn when the fire’s been tamed?

So *spoiler alert if anyone happens to read my fanfic*

When Peeta sort of allies with Teff, Rue’s older sister who got chosen (Katniss didn’t get picked in this one so I thought it would be nice to have a parallel for Rue too) sings him this song, but nobody knows how it came about. Likely in the early days of the games.

The first verse is about the reaping, how they take these sweet, innocent children, before they even have a chance to ‘grow’. Kind of obvious. The apple picking also kind of references rue and district 11.

The second one is about the dehumanisation, how the Capitol treat them like animals rather than humans who they are literally going to watch kill each other. They make them up to be all pretty and train them like that’s what they’re meant to do, like they have always been monsters.

The third is about the games, how they’re suffering because of something they had no say in. It’s so traumatic to be broken down that eventually they are too damaged to ever heal.

The final one is about how they treat the victors, how shallow it is. But how they’ve been turned from coal to diamond (not pearl, Effie) and the fire they were capable of has been hardened, now they’re so scared that nothing can hurt them ant more. It can also reference how they’re prostituted and objectified, like heartless, priceless diamonds.

Overall, the song is about losing yourself, which is the whole theme of my story. It really focuses on the idea that the games are to show that people are monsters, and that is it actually that the games force people to become those monsters, they change who they are entirely. The whole idea of these victors winning nothing, and losing the person they were before. It’s about becoming a piece in the games.

Seeing as my story is from Peeta’s PoV, it just feels right to show his inner dilemma, how he wants to die as himself but the Capitol keeps changing him.

So yeah, I just really wanted to get some views on this. Hopefully it makes sense! And as for the tune, it’s a pretty classic structure so really you can sing it however you like.
