How to Make an Amateur Video Game

They tagged me in an active coders blog they drew up and you should, if you're reading this, give them a follow. They deserve it!

So I mean the title kind of spills what I want to start sharing here? I will be starting small with this blog. I Spend the time I have and/or want to have, working on this game idea I've had for a bit. I want to go into detail on it but for now it is important that I don't. When it's playable I'll be excited to share more about it detail wise though as over time things can change...

So let's start with what I was initially working on, creating an executable window that would pop up just on it's own. With renders of images or clickable areas in the box. This is something I spent the whole week struggling with figuring out how to make it work. Only because I word things stupid. So much so to the point I'd be ashamed to share with you my google search history currently, but maybe a little later on I'll be less embarrassed about it.

Important to note, I am programming using C++. The journey has been fun and challenging. I've enjoyed working on it this way more than I feel I would've had it been for a "100 Days of Code" challenge. I work on my own schedule and time. Speaking of, I think Pre-Production is different from what I thought it was. I assumed it was just a lot of research and planning and prep. Research helped me determine that it's a lot of coding and making a playable, viable game just without a lot of stuff like graphical assets so oops! My bad! Please, don't come for me... or if you do please don't make it painful.

Anyways, we all know Microsoft provides the .exe window code free of charge on their website. It does what It needs to and pulls up an executable window with just a blank, blinding white screen. As I'm lazy, I did opt to take that code for ease. However, after that bit I'm choosing to do a lot of research and write every other bit of code line by line. Now I'm excited to share this all as I go through the waves of creation!

I did run into a huge snag though. I can't remember if I even mentioned it in this post earlier while typing though :/ See I've never had an executable window take in input before such as a key stroke or a click. I'm not sure how to make that work. I've read a lot of stuff but I don't know how to make it take it in. Because on my program, the window pops up but in order for the program to successfully run and, as a result, exit there must be a mouse click and it will return with exit code 0.

When I have it take in this mouse click, nothing happens. I've tried clicking on the window, closing the window, clicking inside the command prompt on my IDE but nothing happens. I feel stuck because I've been reading a lot it feels like but maybe nothing is sticking. Or there is a bit of extra software or an additional library I'm in need of. How do i go about knowing what I am looking for? would I need something extra to have the executable window register I clicked anything to begin with? A rendered box per chance to act like a button?

I wanted to solve this and come here excited to share but I am frustrated because I feel like I threw my mangled corpse into the deep end of the swimming pool after an intense surgery. I just am unsure what the terms I need to look up are. Maybe I should start with some of the smaller things for the game though. I think for now that's what I will aim to try and do, work on the less difficult bits of making a game and create some minor playable bits for a bit of enjoyment to see some form of it come to life.

I think typing this out helped me to think of what I need to look up though but we will see once I've looked it up based upon how far I get off that.
