i am a practising filmmaker based in manchester currently working in freelance, specialising in making music videos and artist moving image with further experience in making short films. I am an easy going character that will fit into most if not all working environments in both pre and post production with knowledge in using final cut pro x and primer pro.
i see my self as a music video specialist when it comes to filmmaking as that is what i have had the most experience doing working for the likes of The Orielles and Tim Burgess from The Charlatans. I like to create an easy going work environment and can normally adapt to most problems i am faced with while filming. my work normally takes the route of perfecting simplicity, taking an simple idea and reworking it into something original. experienced in using both premier, final cut pro x and my usual camera choice falls towards the canon 5D mark iii but i want to start branching out and using more high end cameras.
currently graduating from MMU studying BA Film Making, i have also graduated from blackburn college's creative arts and design foundation course finishing with a distinction.
Through out my education i have come a long way in developing my creative practice gaining a better knowledge of how equipment works, but i have still based my practice in creating music videos and live session videos, but what i have learnt through my time in education is how to craft short films and documentaries which is something i never saw my self doing 3 years ago. Why i still see my self as a music video specialist is because that is the area where i have gained the most success, as i have had my work mentioned on DAZED magainze's website with the orelles and have been praised by Tim Burgess of the charlatans for the work i have done for him.
I have also set up my own series instilled Live And Outside in which i sours musicians and get the to play live sessions out side in different locations, which is something i will be looking to expand upon in the next year.

Well That’s It
Just like that I am at the end of my degree with my final film under my belt, so whats next? well I want to continue down the route of making music videos and slowly make that my occupation alongside trying to get my “Live and Outside” series off the ground. Everything I have don this year had pointed towards this being an achievable as I have got paid work all year doing my music videos for local bands that are about to get a major push with them guaranteeing me more work in the future. I have worked hard this year to try get as much paid video work as I could even though I was facing a lot of person problems at the time that often rendered me unable to leave the house, But how do I feel coming out of my degree? Well I am feeling positive I have made a film I am extremely proud of which is going to tour around the U.K. and Maybe beyond, as well as insuring more music video work in the future. So that’s it and i have learnt a lot about my self on the way, about what sort of filmmaker I am. Coming to the conclusion that I am an artist filmmaker who uses his skills in this media to create music videos. Without this degree I wouldn’t have been able to figure this out about my self and I am eternally grateful for everything the course has done for me and I am exited to see what the future holds for me.

So here it is, the final film of my final year of university, and what more can i say i tried my heart out to make it what it is i did all the visual side of things my self and edited it with next to no help. This is something that i never thought that i could have done and i am proud i feel it gets across a message and holds a narrative which if i was asked if i could do on my fist day of university i know i would never been able to pull this off. with Help from joe along the way who did an amazing job on the sound. I know it isn’t perfect and a lot of people might right it off but personally i think we have done  a great job on this film and i can’t wait to show it off to the public. with we have already arranged to do at Dot To Dot music and film festival alongside also having a showing at a small film festival in Leeds, which means we are taking the film on the road which is an exiting concept and we will probably try get it shown as much as possible to get our names out there and spread the word about the problematic dilemma of all the plastic waste that is clogging up this world.
Obviously the quality isn’t as good as it actually is in this upload, this is only here strictly for the blog to see this film and i have not had time to upload the actual full quality version.

The Forrest Shoot
Right away this shoot was in jeopardy as Tom didn’t turn up, but when we actually got there the forrest was almost completely dark which compromised almost all the shots i wanted to get, so with some quick improve i got the shots that the scene relied upon being the first and last one, then ran around the whole entire Forrest trying to find light spots and making Sam walk around like he was in search of something. How I changed this whole scene up to save the shoot day was that I decided to get lots of long drawn out shots of him walking around the forest because i knew this scene had to be to be quite long so after running round the forrest till the sun sent down i made sure that i had enough footage to go home with and edit which thankfully i did and the edit after this ran extremely smoothly

Here we are trying to make this small hall way into a claustrophobic environment that seems so much bigger than it actually is.

The Plastic Bag World & Underwater Scene
Again with this shoot we knew exactly what we had to do so it’s went by extremely quick again as it was pretty much just an in and out job. We decided to start with the plastic bag world first because we knew it would be the easiest one to achieve  as it is essentially just one shot which requires very little skill camera wise.
As we thought it went by extremely quickly and we nailed it in about four takes so it was onto shooting the underwater scene which was going to be pretty much a shot for shot remake of the one we had done in the research film so again we knew exactly what we where doing and this scene was achieved extremely quickly as well with the shoot only lasting about an hour we where done and ready to edit said scene.

Lies Action News
With the actual news report being filmed we where able to get started on actually filming the opening scene. Which due to how much experimenting we had done before hand went extremely smoothly because we knew exactly what we wanted to get. what i wanted on this day was to get almost too much footage of the actual news report its self as in the past i have left shoots with not enough footage to work with in the edit and it is a pain. So i filmed about twenty five different angles of the TV to ensure that we would not be stuck wanting more in the edit.

Starting Shooting
We found it only sensible to start filming the news report first before it was put on the old TV because as soon as we got that done we could film the intro scene which was the main scene we where all exited to get done.
We set this up scene up as we had a script for our actor to work from but at the same time anything random he wanted to throw in there he could as long as it had a Max Headroom feel to it, before we started filming we had shown him what Max Headroom to further his understanding of how he should act with in his character.
It was a long shoot but extremely simple to do as it was literally one static camera angle, but making sure we had enough content was the longest part of it all. In the end how ever we ended up with almost too much stuff to work with as we had about twenty minutes worth of footage to sift through to create a 2 minutes news report, but even through going through it all it turned out we only had enough usable footage that wasn’t too offensive or just wasn’t good footage.

Now We Are Getting Somewhere
At this point we had almost eradicated all things that where wrong with the research film, and the last one was how we where going to make the outside scenes stronger. First of all we knew that we had to be more adventurous with our location, this is when I remembered a really nice forest in Buxton that had a lot of trees and had a very green feel to it which was perfect as we wanted the outside scenes to be the complete opposite to the inside ones, for them to be peaceful and have lots of space around them.
This meant one thing. We needed to take a trip out there to check out the location. As soon as we got there we knew that it would be the place to shoot, as we ran into a natural pool that had been made through rain fall and would make the perfect transitional point to the underwater scene as it looked quite peculiar and our character could peer into it.
From this point we where all set to start actually making the film.

Another Step
The next step before production started was how were where going to approach the plastic world scene and take it from looking quite peaceful to a claustrophobic environment that our main character can’t wait to get out of. So this called for another test shoot.
In the mist of inflating bags with a hairdryer on the day of our test shoot it struck me how i was going to make this scene work. So i taped a bag to a door frame and started blowing air into it with the hairdryer whilst holding the camera in the other and moving it about erratically, the visuals that i was getting were perfect, they where violent plasticky and very claustrophobic. Tom then decided to press his hand against the bag and the concept for how we where going to film this scene was born as it legitimately looked like he was falling through a punch of plastic and was desperate to get out of this environment.
Figuring this out was a god send as it completely simplified the shoot and made it so much easier to film as it was just one long take.

Test Shoot Lies Action News
I figured out a few things from this test shoot, for example the Ito stop motion method of filming works and we can get some great visuals from the old tv. what i noticed how ever is that our transition from this scene to the next looked extremely weak and almost dumb. What we wanted to do was have some inflated bags wrap around our protagonist then we would use the white of the bags to transition to the bag world, but it simply didn’t work but with some on the spot thinking i was able to come up with a concept that was effective. The transition from one scene to the next would work via our protagonist starting to question the news report and then touches the screen then we would use the same stop motion technique to zoom right into the flashing of the screen to imply that our protagonist has been sucked inside the TV which ended up completely working. From this we knew exactly how this scene was going to pan out and work so that was one hurdle over come before actually shooting.
