Grid Systems
What is a Grid System?
A Grid system is a format that involves using various methods of creating columns and boxes that will include information and data. They are used in everyday things such as books, magazines, newspapers etc. Most include columns, headers and gutters which help separate information and organize it in a way that will interact with the reader.
Why is it important to use a Grid system in your approach in Graphic design?
It is important to use a Grid system in your approach to Graphic design as using this form will help create a precise form of Grids over a variety of rectangles and will be useful when it comes to setting out information.
What are the benefits of using a Grid system?
The benefits of using a Grid system is that it builds a basis for your design to grow and evolve on. It involves using mathematics and proportions to help the elements on the page, whether its vertical or horizontal. For the page to be visually presentable there needs to be an even space between each other.

Create an Icon Task (Hotel Icon)
Example One:
Tumblr media
What does it look like?
This icon looks like a person who is resting underneath a roof which demonstrates that the whole point of a hotel is that you go there to sleep over night.
Is it a simple design?
It is a simple design as they’ve only used a couple of shapes to create this icon, for example the head is a simple circle shape which is done by using the elipse tool. It’s also not all clustered together which makes it look more professional as an icon design and very presentable to the public eye.
Is it modern?
This design is modern as for years people have portrayed the hotel icon as a single hotel as this won’t overcomplicate it for some people, but this is a modern take on the hotel icon design as it’s simple but something new and unique.
Does it portray the theme?
This icon does portray the theme in some ways as it clearly shows a person sleeping under a roof and for some people you would think this icon represents a hotel but then again, it could also represent other things like maybe a bedding shop or housing agency.
Example 2:
Tumblr media
What does it look like?
This icon looks like a building with the letter H on it which also looks slightly like a helipad and not significantally like a Hotel sign, but with the various windows you can tell its a hotel.
Is it a simple design?
This icon is a simple design as they’ve only used a simple curved edged square to create the windows, the door and the actual building itself and they’ve also used it for the ‘H’ in the hotel sign.
Is it modern?
This icon is modern, as you could see this being on road signs directing people to where the hotel they are staying in is. It is a very straight forward icon and easy to read from a far distance.
Does it accurately portray the theme?
This icon accurately portrays the theme as it shows a hotel in a simplified form using squares and overall it uses a clear bold letter H to let people know it’s a hotel, but then again people might mistake it for a hospital as they both look very similiar so it may be confusing to some people.
Example 3:
Tumblr media
What does it look like?
This icon looks like a hotel in my opinion as they’ve included everything you would associate with a hotel on it, for example you’ve got the hotel building itself which looks identical, then you’ve got the number of stars on the outside which is also relatable to a hotel and then you’ve got a ‘H’ underneath the stars so that also will help make it look like a hotel.
Is it a simple design?
It’s design is simple but not as simple as previous designs as there is a lot more going on for example above the door is a ledge and next to that you’ve got some lights so it’s still quite simple but not the simplest.
Is it modern?
It is modern as in this design you can see that the star rating system has been intoduced and a lot of people nowadays go off how many stars the hotel has been awarded, so this shows that the design is pretty modernised.
Does it accuately portray the theme?
This icon definitely portrays the theme as it looks exactly like a hotel in my opinion and ticks all the boxes off in showing a professional icon that could be up on signs.
Example 4:
Tumblr media
What does it look like?
This icon looks like a hotel as it quite obviously displays a sign on the building itself saying ‘hotel’ so that gives it away straight away. But the buildings also have numerous windows so that also gives the effect that it’s a hotel.
Is it a simple design?
This design isn’t simple compared to the others as they’ve angled the building so it almost looks almost three dimensional. On the other hand they’ve used a lot of simple shapes such as squares, curved edged squares & stars to create the hotel itself.
Is it modern?
This icon design is modern as it shows a modern design on hotels nowadays. They haven’t gone for something straight forward as a simple building with windows and some stars to represent the hotel.
Does it accurately portray the theme?
This icon accurately portrays the theme as it clearly shows a hotel in a unique way through three buildings, one with three stars on top which shows that it’s got a rating of three stars and one with the hotel sign on the front which gives the theme away straight away.
Example 5:
Tumblr media
What does it look like?
It looks like a tag you get on a digital map to show you where your destination is, but it has the letter ‘H’ in the middle to represent that the hotel is in that place.
Is it a simple design?
It is a simple design as they’ve just used a tag shape to create this destination spot and then used the text by putting in the letter ‘H’ bold inside the middle of the tag to make it stand out.
Is it modern?
It is a pretty modern design as they use this in a lot of digital maps to show where the destination is for people who are heading out to somewhere they’ve never been before and they’ve utilised this to make their design.
Does it accurately portray the theme?
This icon doesn’t really accurately portray the theme as it only shows the letter ‘H’ to represent the fact it’s a hotel, but this might confuse some people as hospitals also start with the letter ‘H’ and people might think they are heading to the hospital instead of a hotel.
What are the most frequent shapes / symbols used to represent the theme?
The most frequent shapes/symbols used to represent the theme seem to be squares, curved edged squares and stars. These shapes/symbols help the most to represent the theme as they contrast nicely when creating an icon with the hotel theme.

Andy Warhol
Tumblr media
Where and when was he born?
Andy Warhol was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania,US on August 6th 1928. He was the fourth child of Ondrej Warhola and Julia Warhola, unfortunately whose first child died in their hometown in Slovakia before they moved to the US.
Life Events
During Andy Warhol's bring up him and his family lived at the address 3252 Dawson street in the Oakland neighbourhood of Pittsburgh. As a kid Andy Warhol had Sydenhams chorea which is a disease in the nervous system that causes involuntary movements and is apparently caused through Andy having Scarlet fever. Due to this it meant most of the time Andy was bed ridden meaning he spent a lot of time at home and with his mother, they bonded in this time and Andy would use his time off wisely by drawing, listening to the radio and posted pictures of famous actors/actresses round his bedroom. When Andy Warhol was 14 his father passed away due to an accident considering his  jaundiced liver. His mother didn’t allow Andy to attend the funeral as she was concerned it would bring back his nervous condition. In 1954 Andy received a certificate of excellence from the American institute of Graphic Art. Then on June 3rd 1968 Andy Warhol was shot in his own studio (The Factory) by Valerie Solanas. He is pronounced clinically dead but survives the shot.
Education
Andy Warhol attended the Holmes Elementary school and took the free art lessons offered by the Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh which was convenient as this is where he lived. Due to his father passing in 1942, Andy was given his fathers savings for future prospects at a college as his father knew he had a talent and wanted him to flourish at it. In that same year, Warhol began at Schenley High School, and upon graduating, in 1945, he enrolled at the Carnegie Institute for Technology to study Pictorial Design. When he graduated from college with his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1949, Warhol moved to New York City to pursue a career as a commercial artist.
What was Warhol’s Specialism?
Andy Warhol was the most successful and highly paid commercial illustrator in New York even before he began to make art destined for galleries. Nevertheless, his screenprinted images of Marilyn Monroe, soup cans, and sensational newspaper stories, quickly became synonymous with Pop Art.
 What Techniques did Warhol practise?
Andy Warhol practiced with certain techniques, one technique in particular was ‘Silkscreen printing’ which is a printing technique whereby a mesh is used to transfer ink onto a substrate, except in areas made impermeable to the ink by a blocking stencil. Warhol also uses photo-stencils in his screen-printing as well as he uses photographic images to his pieces of art.
What movement was Warhol central to?
Andy Warhol was central to the pop art movement, as he took commonplace objects and people of everyday life, in this way seeking to elevate popular culture to the level of fine art. Perhaps owing to the incorporation of commercial images, Pop art has become one of the most recognizable styles of modern art.
What are the key characteristics of this movement?
The key characteristics of this movement were that it emerged Britain and the United States during the mid- to late- 1950′s. It also challenged the traditions of fine art by including imagery from popular and mass culture, such as advertising, comic books and mundane cultural objects. Warhol took the approach through advertisements as he took the Campbell’s soup tin can and created a masterpiece that took pop art to a whole new phenomenon.
What was Warhol famous for?
Warhol was famous for his influence amongst the pop art community, as he took this unusual form of fine art to a whole new level and created in someways masterpieces which sold for millions. He was the most successful and highly paid commercial illustrator in New York even before he began to make art for destined galleries. His screen printed images of Marilyn Monroe, Soup cans, and incredible newspaper stories, quickly became synonymous with Pop art.
Warhol’s Work - Example 1
Tumblr media
What is it called?
This is called Mickey mouse, after one of the first ever cartoon characters made by Mr Disney Himself in 1928, which was after the first ever cartoon character made who was called Oswald the Lucky Rabbit.
When was it made?
This particular piece was made in 1981 as this was the year it was published as ‘Myths’, part of a ten image Portfolio. The series is based on characters from American Popular culture which have become icons, defining different generations.
What techniques were used to make this?
There was a single technique used to make this, which was by inlaying the prints with diamond dust, a by-product of making of industrial-grade diamonds. It is sprinkled on to the ink whilst still wet, creating the effect of a shimmering surface, this is a reminiscent of the gold leaf used in the late 1950′s.
Warhol's work - Example 2
Tumblr media
What is it called?
This is called Marilyn Diptych, which is a tribute for Marilyn Monroe as she died ealier in the year from an overdose on barbiturates. Warhol made a series of these silkscreens (twenty to be precise) when Marilyn Monroe died and used public photographs from the 1953 film Niagara.
When was it made?
Warhol made this piece in 1962, with the other various silkscreens, all of them based on the photographs from the film Niagara. He used his two most consistent themes, death and the cult of celebrity.
What techniques were used to make this?
He used the silkscreening technique to form 50 images of Marilyn Monroes face on two silver canvases. He used an explicit form of Christian painting in this piece as he took a reference from Diptych with the Virgin and Child Enthroned and the Crucifixion. This piece showed that Warhol was not only influenced by Pop Culture, but also by Art History.
Warhols work - Example 3
Tumblr media
What is it called?
This piece of work is called Electric chair and is part of Warhols substantial death and disaster series that he started in 1962, other examples of this include depicted car crashes and suicides as illustrated in Newspapers, there are examples of Warhols work for this as well, including race riot 1963 and Ambulance disaster 1963.
When was it made?
Electric chair was made in 1964 in Warhols studio in New York. He made this image to explore the effect of reproducing such images repeatedly across a canvas, testing his hypothesis, that ‘when you see a greusome picture over and over again, it doesn’t really have an effect’.
What techniques were used to make this?
Warhol used the technique of printing images in monochrome colours and, according to the gallerist Frayda Feldman and the art publisher Jörg Schellmann, these were sceened in a way ‘that retained the gaininess and immediacy of the mass media images on which they were based’, creating imperfections and variations in each work such that they retained a handmade quality.
Warhols work - Example 4
Tumblr media
What is it called?
This piece of work is called Muhammad Ali, it is part of Warhol’s ‘Athletes seires’ which also involved the likes of the football star Pele, and the golfer, Jack Nicklaus. These sport stars were unfamiliar to Warhol but they caught his attention as they are very big stars.
When was it made?
This piece was made in 1977. It was initiated by the art collector and sports enthusiast, Richard Weisman. Warhol’s picture of Muhammad Ali shows the boxer at the height of his fame and talents.
What techniques were used to make this?
Warhol used four screenprints to make this image of Muhammad Ali. Prior to the reproduced screenprints, Warhol worked into the surfaces using paint to create the impession of movement. Ali’s fixed stare mimics the concentration required during a fight.
Warhols work - Example 5
Tumblr media
What is it called?
This piece of work is called Skulls, he used these skulls as a motif in his work of this period to the artists near fatal shooting in 1968. Others have suggested that Warhol’s interest in the skulls is a motif stemmed from his desire to evoke the human condition.
When was it made?
This piece was made in 1976. It was made in Warhol’s studio in New York, also known as the Factory, on unstretched canvas that had been rolled flat out on the studio floor.
What techniques were used to make this?
Warhol used six canvases which are displayed in a vertical grid of three rows of two. The photographs were taken by Ronnie Cutrone, one of Warhol’s assistants at the time, who also positioned the skull on a trestle table, resting it on a piece of Plywood covered in white paper in front of a black studio wall. In order of casting out various dramatic shadows, Warhol instructed Cutrone to take several photograpghs will changing the light source. Warhol also employed a man by the name of Rupert Smith to help him with the screenprinting pocess. Synthetic polymer paint, a fast drying alternative to oil paint, which was used as the background onto which the image of the skull was screen-printed.

Image Depth (Unit 27)
STEP 1:
Tumblr media
In this lesson we had taken everything we had learnt in previous lessons to create a depthed image that makes the text stand out to look almost three dimensional. We had a variety of photos to choose from to start off with, and we had to combine two of the images together to create an unusual image. I started off by adding this image of a tennis racket to a Photoshop document by selecting the saved image and dragging it into the document.
STEP 2:
Tumblr media
After uploading this image to a Photoshop document I changed the adjustments round a bit by selecting the ‘Image’ drop down menu at the top then hovering over ‘Adjustments’ then selecting ‘Curves’ I maneuvered the line around to get this sort of blue colour which also changed the racket to make it stand out a bit more.
STEP 3:
Tumblr media
After I changed the Curves on the first image, I then held down ‘alt’ and rotated it by an angle of 25 degrees anti clockwise which gave it a background effect and looked like there were two rackets now instead of one. I then moved onto changing some Adjustments round like I did in the first original image which gave it more of an effect on the first image to make it stand out.
STEP 4:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Adjusments I changed to get the image I have now got were Levels, Curves, Exposure & Brightness/Contrast. Changing these Adjustments made the second image a lot darke than the original version, which was suppose to fade in the background but it doesn’t show up on this image above, but it gave it a sort of layering effect of different contrasts of blue/purple, this also brings out two geometrical shapes which looks unique.
STEP 5:
Tumblr media
After changing the Adjustments of the second tennis racket I created another one by holding ‘alt’ and rotating it again but this time clockwise by 25 degrees which now gave it another geometrical shape behind the original image of the tennis racket. I changed the opacity of this image though to make it look less dark which I should have done with the second image as it is far too dark and hides the background content.
STEP 6:
Tumblr media
The other image I decided to take from the selection was this picture of a black coloured parrot which I opened again in Photoshop by holding down on the image file and dragging it into the document. I then selected the Lassio tool to highlight the certain part of the image I wanted to take from it which in this case was the head of the parrot, so once I had drawn around it I removed the rest if the image by basically copying and pasting the selected area (CTRL C + CTRL V) and then removing the background layer. Once I had the part of the image I wanted, I dragged this into the other document which had my manipulated image of the tennis racket in and placed it central within the inside of the racket where the mesh would be. I then changed the curves etc. on the parrots head so it stood out from the rest.
STEP 7:
I then moved onto the text which I did by selecting the ‘Text’ tool which then allowed me to drag out a box so I could write inside it. So I wrote ‘Tennis’ which I then changed the font and the font size so it’s a lot more visible and is noticable at the front. I changed the font settings so it had an emboss effect on it by selecting an icon at the bottom of the layers pannel which is addessed as ‘af’ but unfortunately it doesn’t show up on this final image but this gave the text a sort of three dimensional effect.
Final finished product:
Tumblr media
How could you improve this next time?
Next time I could improve this image by maybe using another image and when trying to layer it over change the brightness/contrast as in this final image it has ruined the effect I was going for as it is a lot darker than I was expecting it to be. I could also change the text so the image I choose is actually inside the text. You can do that by selecting an image, placing it inside any photoshop document by holding on the image and dragging it in. Then gather some text and make sure the font is bold and thick so you can fit your selected image in, then once you’ve done this, drag the text layer under the image so it’s now behind the image and then whilst highlighting over the line between the ‘text’ layer and the ‘image’ layer hold down the ‘alt’ button which will then put the image layer inside the text.

Victoria Siemer Inspired Piece
Step 1 (Image Preparation) :
Tumblr media
I started off by gathering an image from Unsplash (the website where you can take images off for free legally that are also high resolution images) and openingit in Adobe Photoshop after doing this I unlocked the layer for the image as it was originally locked.
STEP 2 (Image Dupliaction) :
Tumblr media
After that I then non-destructively duplicated the first layer by holding down CTRL + J as this will then duplicate the image and that is a non-deconstructive way of doing it or you could also hold down CTRL + C & then CTRL + V as this will copy and paste the original image.
STEP 3 (Image Manipulation) :
Tumblr media
I then had to make the decision of which area on the image I wanted to take out and manipulate to make it look like a Victoria Siemer piece of work. I decided to go fo the area in the image that had an abstract rocky mountain range. I started off by highlighting this area with the ‘Elipse Marquee’ tool which gave the marching ant effect around it. I then selected the ‘Selection’ tool which gave me it’s transformations so I could move the image I had selected around, I moved it into the centre just above where the original rocky mountain is. After doing this process I then had to rotate the image by holding down CTRL + T and turning it clockwise so it reached the angle of 180 degrees, so it was basically just facing the original image but upside down. I then had to flip that image horizontally, so I had the layer selected and I went to the ‘Edit’ option in the top corner, I then went down to the option that says ‘Flip Horizontal’ so I clicked on that and this is what I was left with above.
STEP 4 (Opacity Level) :
After step 3 we focused more on the image we had taken to manipulate, I did this by selecting the drop down option above my layers which I could blend the image into the background which was my original image. The drop down option I used to blend the image in was ‘Kind’ which gave it a lower opacity on the image to blend it nicely with the background just like Victoria does in her images.
STEP 5 (Layer Mask) :
I then created a layer mask on the image I had manipulated as this is a non-destructive way to complete my Victoria Siemer inspired work. I did this by selecting my image then heading down to the bottom of my layers and selecting the icon that looks like the Japanese flag which will create a layer mask on that individual layer. This will then help me with the next step to come.
STEP 6 (Blending Tool) :
This step is helped by creating the layer mask from the previous one. I now selected the ‘Brush’ tool which is located on the left hand side of the screen, this is now selected with the layer on my layer mask for the image I have selected. I then make sure I swap the two colours I have round so Black is my foreground colour and White is my background, this is because when going over something in White, it brings the image back (Conceals) and Black takes the image away and shows what’s underneath it (Reveals). After doing this I chose how big I wanted the Brush tool to be by pressing either the ‘[’ button to shrink the size or the ‘]’ button to enlarge it, but I chose a reasonable size and went over the part of the image I had manipulated and bleneded it in with the background as I was using the colour black in the masked layer.
STEP 7 (TEXT) :
Tumblr media
After completing the Victoria Seimer inspired part off with the image, we then used some text to create the same sort of technique we used to create this same effect that had taken place in the previous steps. First of all, I pressed the ‘T’ button on my keyboard which created a text box for me to write in. I then entered the word ‘Desert’ as this is what my image looks like, after doing this I moved my image with the ‘Selection’ tool and moved it towards the bottom as I had a mix of the sky and land. After doing this I then flipped my text vertically this time instead of horizontally and ended up with this above.
STEP 8 (Layer Mask on Text Layer) :
Tumblr media
Flipping the image in the previous step helps the text as it then has more light towards the bottom than to the top so it’s blatent what the word says overall. We created another layer mask on the text layer which will direct us into the same place that we did with the original image. So once we’ve taken our text and changed it back so we’ve got our backgrround inside the text which was done by sellecting all the letters by holding down ‘Shift’ after the ‘Magic wand’ tool is selected and clicking on all the letters, this then would create the same marching ant effect like it did when creating the circle for the original image. After doing this I then pasted the image I wanted inside the text, after this was done I flipped my image over and was resulted in this above.
STEP 9 (Final Result) :
Tumblr media
Above is the finalised image of my Victoria Siemer inspired piece which shows that simplicity can actually be incredibly inspirational. I also used the ‘Brush’ tool again to fade the bottom of the letters into the background.
Do you think you have successfully created work in the style of Vitoria Siemer?
I think I have successfully created work in the style of Victoria Siemer as I have nailed the keen details which were; focus on one part of the image in particular which I took the rocky mountains and manipulated them into a circular shape, then also I’ve used text to create the same effect as in the original image as well. So in my opinion the work I have produced went pretty well.
It’s always good to get inspiration from current trending artists / styles – however, why is it important to not just copy?
It’s important to not copy current trending artists / styles as this is Plagairism at the end of the day. If you copy someones work then that is not your work, it is someone elses time and effort that has gone into that and it’s actually a law breaker so there is no point in doing it whatsoever. If you copy as well then it’s unoriginal, you have just taken somebody elses idea and it’s not came from you.
What went well?
I feel that the original image went well overall as I managed to get the right part of the image to manipulate and change to accomidate the same sort of style as Victoria Siemer’s images. Also I chose the right text for the image as it has enough space in the lettering to fit an image inside to create this style of imagary.
What didn’t go so well?
I feel that I could have used a better image from Unsplash to create this Victoria Siemer style than this landscape as it only has a particular area which stands out to the rest and there is nothing really going on within the picture.
What would you do differently next time?
Next time when I am trying to master the style of Victoria Siemer I will maybe change the shape of the area I want to manipulate and make stand out from the rest. I would also change the whole image all together as I would prefer to use a forest kind of scenery as this would capture a more better rounded affect on the trees etc.

Colour Wheel
In this lesson I used what I had learnt about colour wheels and applied them into photoshop as I made my own one using images that I had taken off Unsplash which consisted of six colours as there are six colous in the secondary wheel which include: Blue, Red, Green, Purple, Oange & Yellow.
Step 1:
Tumblr media
We start this process off by opening up Adobe Illustrator and selecting the ‘Elipse’ tool which I then drew a neat circle by holding down the ‘Shift’ button whilst dragging it out. I then selected the option to change the thickness of the circle by increasing the ‘Stroke’ option in the top left.
Step 2:
Tumblr media
After the cirlce was drawn which is the base of the colour wheel, I drew a straight line across the centre by selecting the ‘Line’ tool and like the circle holding the shift button so it’s accurate and completely straight. I also changed the thickness of this line to the same as the circle.
Step 3:
Tumblr media
After drawing the line across the middle of the circle, I moved onto drawing another two lines which create the individual 6 segments of colours in my secondary colour wheel. I completed the wheel by selecting the line in the middle from step 2 and whilst holding down ‘Alt’ dragging the same line up slightly, after that I held down ‘Shift’ whilst rotating the line 45° anti-clockwise which I then repeated the process but instead of going anti-clockwise, this time I went clockwise.
Step 4:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I then gathered 6 different images to do with space using the 6 different colours in the Secondary colour wheel, I gathered these images from a website called Unsplash which is a website made for taking photos off there legally and also have high quality resolution from them in the mean time. I then exported these images into a document on Adobe Photoshop.
Step 5:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Once opened onto a document in Adobe Photoshop, I managed to crop the images down by selecing the ‘Crop’ tool in the side bar menu and then scaled how I wanted my overall image to look and then pressed the ‘Enter’ button to remove part of the image I don’t want and keep the main part I wanted in my colour wheel. I then saved these new cropped images over the original ones I gathered off Unsplash.
Step 6:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After saving all the cropped images, I then opened my template for the colour wheel in Photoshop which I had previously completed in Step 3. I then start adding the cropped images to to the wheel and placing each one where I want them in the segments. I’ve turned the eye off for the layers that I’m not focusing on as it gives me a rough idea of how it’s going to fill out the segment. If I clicked on all of the eyes on the ‘Layers’ section then it would show all of the images ovelapping one another.
Step 7:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After having each image hovering over the top of the segments, I select each one indivdually by selecting the specific layer for example if I wanted to select the ‘Red layer’ then I’d select that layer in the ‘Layers’ section which should highlight the red image, then I select the ‘Magic Wand’ tool which should highlight the individual segment that the red image is in. After selecting this segment which should have the marching ants aound it, I had to go down to the bottom under the Layers section and select an icon which looks like the Japanese flag as it’s just a circle inside a square. This then removes the rest of the image we don’t want and then we have our image inside a single segment.
Step 8:
Tumblr media
This is my finalalised Secondary colour wheel which was done by the step by steps shown above. You can click off the overall wheel which will get rid of the black outline so it just blends in with the white background.
What do you like about the finished colour wheel?
What I like about it is that the space theme stands out as I have clusters of stars and the Northern lights shown, this is what I wanted it to do because I think that Space is such a good theme to do one on as they have some very nice vibrant colours that look great in a Secondary colour wheel like this one.
What could you improve on next time?
Next time I could improve on choosing some colours that might stand out a bit better as the yellow I’ve chose isn’t the most obvious out of the rest of the colours. I could also improve on creating a better straight line as I’ve clearly made a mistake at the start as my purple is going under the black line and overlapping the blue layer, I have a feeling I didn’t draw a straight line and accidentally slanted my line downwards instead, but I will drastically make changes to this next time and focus more on getting my lines straight etc.

Unit_02 (Colour wheel)
What are primary, secondary and tertiary colours?
. Primary colours are a set of three individual colours that consist of Blue, Red & Yellow. These three colours are the starters in the colour wheel and are the base of creating more colours in the wheel.
. Secondary colours are a set of six colours which consist of Blue, Red, Yellow, Orange, Green & Purple. These colours are now part of the colour wheel as the previous primary colours have combined together to create these new colours, such as blue & red creates purple and yellow & red creates orange.
. Tertiary colours are now a set of twelve colours as each time the colours double. These consist of Blue, Blue-Green, Green, Yellow-Green, Yellow, Yellow-Orange, Orange, Red-Orange, Red, Red Violet, Violet, Blue Violet and then it goes back to the Primary colour Blue again. These are a mixture of Primary colours and Secondary Colours, such as Orange merges with Red to create a Red-Orange shade.

Photoshop Process
Tumblr media
STEP 1:
First of all we opened up our images onto Photoshop. I did this by clicking on File in the top left corner, then Open and then selecting the two images I want to have open on Photoshop. File > Open > Selected Images
STEP 2:
I then selected the Polygonal Lasso Tool to highlight the specific area of my picture I want to be taken out from its original imagary, in this case I wanted to remove the telephone box from the background which I’ve done and used the Marquee Selection Tool to select the image which I’ve captured from the backgound and can now move it around and stretch the image out which when happy with can be taken off by just clicking on the tick button at the top of the screen.
Tumblr media
STEP 3:
I then copied my selection by clicking on the option ‘Edit’ and then clicking on the option ‘Copy’ (Shortcut for this is: CTRL+C). I then opened up the other tab which had my textured image on and went to the same menu ‘Edit’ but this time I went on ‘Paste’ instead which pasted my image onto the Textured one (Shortcut for this is: CTRL+V).
Tumblr media
Step 4:
I then duplicated my Telephone Box 21 times across the front of my Textured image. I did this by selecting the first image at the top right and then whilst holding down alt I dragged it across about 10mm each time to get 7 going horizontally and 3 going vertically. I then selected each individual one to change it around slightly, I did this by selecting the one I wanted to chnage then going to Edit and clicking on Transformation which helped me resize it and spin it round (Shortcut for this is: CTRL+T). With every two in from the left on the top row I spun 180 dergrees clockwise and then on the second row I did the same and on the third row which made it look unique and different.
Tumblr media
STEP 5:
After duplicating these layers which contain the image of the telephone box I slected the top layer in the layers box which was ‘layer 2 copy 6′ and then held down ‘shift’ and clicked on the bottom layer which highlighted all the layers and merged them into one object which is ‘layer 3′.
Tumblr media
STEP 6:
After merging the layers together to form one whole image we have the option to change the whole look of it by clicking on the drop down menu under where it says ‘Kind’ in the search engine. I changed my image to ‘Pin Light’ because it fades very nicely into the background texture and doesn’t come out hard on top.
Tumblr media
STEP 7:
After changing the whole image to a more faded picture, we have the option of changing the brightness and contrast of the image. I did this by heading over to the ‘Adjustment’ option on the right hand side which is next to the ‘Properties’ option, once clicked on it, it should bring up numerous icons, so I clicked on the icon which looked a bit like a crown, which if you hovered over the icon would come up with ‘Levels’ this then brought up the option to move the fade switcher from left to right. I adjusted mine so the coffee beans in the background stand out just as much as the telephone boxes infront so theres an even texture of colours.
Tumblr media
STEP 8:
After the process of changing the overall brightness and contrast of the image I move onto the curve tool which you can select by going to the ‘Adjustments’ section again looking for the icon that looks like a graph and clicking on it. You can then maneuver the line in the graph to change the overall dynamic of the image. I tried it out in the photo above but didn’t like the outcome as it brings more effect to the background texture than it does to the front and it overpowers the front images.

STEP 9:
Moving into a bit more detail with the curve option, you have the choice to change the overall colour of your image around with the drop down menu that stations itself under where it says ‘Preset’. Once you click on it, it gives you the option to change the colours from red, blue & green. As shown above I’ve changed my colours around from red to blue, just playing around with the tool to see which colours look nice on my overall design. But then I tried the green one which I decided was the right tone to use with the images as it gave it a really nice effect to everything. As I enjoyed this option the most I ended up leaving it as my final design, this is shown below.

What went well for me in this design for the album cover is that the Pin Light effect I put on it worked really well with the background texture and the two contrasting colours (brown & red) worked really well and created this London theme as both things are relevent.
What didn’t go so well for me in my opinion was the curve option as looking at it now with a pair of refreshed eyes, I notice that the colour is too bright and vibrant for the red which doesn’t settle with the background.
What I’ll do differently next time is change the curve effect so it’s not as light becasue it just ruined the image completely and maybe add a better curve effect on it by playing with the curves and changing the line aound consistently to get a better brightness overall and colour which doesn’t wash away the background as much and the foreground in that matter as well. This should then improve the overall quality of the image to get a better rounded album cover.

Unit_01 (Album Cover)
Plagiarism is where someone takes credit for someone elses work whether it’d be photograghs or artwork, but they do this illegelally because they don’t credit the original artist/photographer.
We used Unsplash in lesson, this is a website that allows you to use high resolution photos with free licensing. However, I will always credit where I can because at the end of the day I haven’t gone through all the hastle and hard work of taking the photo or uploading it online for other people to view, people that take photos for other peoples benefits should be praised and not taken without their permission and then take credit for ‘their’ work.
You shouldn’t take copyrighted images because you could end up going down the line of a criminal injustice, as the person whom you’ve taken the copyrighten work from can take you to court and plead guilty over you, then you’ll have to pay them a hefty fine or it could even extend to a sentence in prison. So I wouldn’t advice you to take somebody elses work ever because its a criminal offence and it’s always taken seriously.
I chose two images. One image had a texture and the other image was a geometic shape. Here are my two images:
