Another Social Dilemma
You’ve probably seen the Netflix special “The Social Dilemma” and if you haven’t yet, definitely give it a shot. Social Media and the companies themselves are not going away. The same can be said about trolls, hackers, cyberbullies, internet thieves. Software engineers created like buttons, infinite scrolls, and ways to algorithmically provide you digital content you may really like. But as these tools were being created, the realm of anonymity grew to utilize free speech as a weapon and attack others who wouldn’t have the slightest clue of how to deal with it. Media professionals may be groomed to deal with backlash, know what to say to disarm a hostile person, or know to ignore them entirely. However, a vast majority of people have never went through media training to deal with people who just want to watch the world burn. It is important this generation to better prepare the next generation of what’s to be expected from a person who wants to be anonymous and exercise their free speech to harm another person. This social dilemma is just as important as what social media companies are planning to unravel next.

Though dealing with trolls on social media is like talking to a wall in real life, there are ways in which people who are being trolled can handle it with grace. Meteorologist Emily Sutton explains her methods to handling abusive, ignorant, and ridiculous behavior caused by trolls online so that others can apply them as well.

Considering we are on the topic of trolls and hackers wanting to cyberbully anonymously, it is becoming more easy to uncover everyone’s true identity behind a computer screen. Most trolls and hackers may be in the shadows now but there are people actively working to shine a light on them.

Quote
The Internet is the realm of the coward. These are people who are all sound and no fury.
Megan Koester, “How Trolls Are Ruining The Internet” by Joel Stein of TIME Magazine
An interesting quote from Joel Stein’s TIME’s publication about online trolls. Koester was quoted saying this to Joel after he asked her why she didn’t accost him in person after essentially trolling him on Twitter.

Doxxing a person’s information without their consent sounds like a bad thing. But what if the person being ‘doxed’ is actually a hacker who is “proud” of their ransomware attacks? Then, maybe doxxing isn’t so bad.
Pancak3 published ransomware hackers information on his Twitter feed, but Twitter flagged him for it.
