“Her [Jane Austen’s] genius began with the recognition that such lives as hers were very eventful indeed — that every life is eventful, if only you know how to look at it. She did not think that her existence was quiet or trivial or boring; she thought it was delightful and enthralling, and she wanted us to see that our own are, too. She understood that what fills our days should fill our hearts, and what fills our hearts should fill our novels.”
— A Jane Austen Education: How Six Novels Taught Me About Love, Friendship, and the Things That Really Matter by William Deresiewicz. (via halfagony-halfhope)

A Long Awaited Return and Review of PEOPLE WE MEET ON VACATION by EMILY HENRY
05.12.2024. 3/5 hearts.
And there was only one bed! Omg shock. One Goodreads reviewer wrote, ‘this book wanted to be ao3-style gay yearning so bad.’ which we have to wholeheartedly agree very much with because the way it was written in this book was boring as fuck.
Every other chapter is a flashback which made it feel dragged out and then the ending was so fast which made it really unsatisfying after all the built up tension. Where’s the yeaaaaarning!!
The barrier in the way of their love is practically nonexistent which is frustrating for the reader because as soon as they don’t have their respective partners it’s like why are you creating problems for yourself?? The friends-to-lovers trope felt very boring because from the moment they met back in college it felt very lovey-dovey…?
Alex seems like a person you’d really like to meet in real life, but as a character he is a very boring side character kinda guy. His whole thing is being a caretaker (hot? hmm yeah okay) who’s somewhat reserved and chuckles a lot at Poppy (L keeps calling her Harper don't ask).
Poppy is no better, and she feels very much like the teenage main character of Girl Online – yes, the very book Zoella had ghostwritten back in the good ol’ days. Escaping to the big city to avoid facing her past, and then befriending Rachel who is quite literally the most boring character to have ever existed. Where is her redemption arc, babes, you need to get out of town.
All in all, it’s pretty much a standard romcom book with the archetypal characters (quirky mc, bemused nerdy love interest, a pretty, extrovert manic pixie dream girl) with a writing style which doesn’t provoke any great feelings other than the feeling of your toes curling once in a while. But we can ignore all of this as we love to indulge in these guilty pleasures - small doses of no-brain light entertainment.
PS: Very short review because one of us cannot for the life of her remember a single thing about reading it, and the other one highlighted every time she cringed, which was a lot (38 times to be exact).
PPS: We can’t promise we’ll be back soon but we’ll try. Fingers crossed.
