I told my students they're allowed to be creative and don't have to be factual when writing about themselves in German because I keep getting questions like "what if I don't have roommates or what if I don't have hobbies" and I'm like guys just make something up! Have fun! I won't fact check you!
So now I am grading homework where a student is claiming to be from North Korea and his hobby is tax fraud

Bass. Cello. Violin. Viola.
Long ago, the four string sections lived in harmony, but everything changed when the violins attacked.
Only the director, master of all four instruments, could stop them. But, when the orchestra needed them most, they vanished.
A hundred years passed and my brother and I discovered the new director, a violist named Aang. And although his sightreading skills are great, he has a lot to learn before he's ready to save anyone.
But I believe Aang can GET THIS ORCHESTRA'S SHIT TOGETHER GUYS I'M SERIOUS THE CONCERT IS IN TWO WEEKS AND-

like the beauty of this thing is it is no filler
six movements all lasting no more than ~3 minutes means that it's not exactly pioneering form or large scale compositional progression but by foregoing the advantages of longer forms/larger structures you get to live in tiny spaces that only last as long as they need to- it paints tiny portraits of characters you can meet, come to love, and then you move on
I think erwin schulhoffs ironien might be an unsung triumph of modern piano composition
i heard two pianists play the movements I II and VI from it and was amazed at how charming his harmony is and how poignant it can be
i might write a review of a specific recording of it i'm truly falling in love with this piece

I want to tell a story to the artists and would-be artists out there.
When I was 19, I made a large oil painting of the nerd I would eventually marry. I poured all my attention and care into this painting. It's the only art I have from back then that still holds up as a work I'm proud of today.
I entered it into a judged show at the local art center. It got an honorable mention. I went to see the show with my beloved model. One of the judges came up to talk to me, and highlighted that all the judges really liked the painting. It would have placed, except, you see, the feet were incorrect. They were too wide and short, and if I just studied a bit more anatomy-
I called over my future wife, and asked her to take off her shoe. Being already very used to humoring me, she did. The judge looked at her very short, very wide little foot. Exactly as I'd lovingly rendered it. I would never edit her appearance in any way.
The judge looked me in the eye, and to his credit, he really looked like he meant it when he said "Oh I'm so sorry."
Anyways the moral of the story is that all of those anatomy books that teach you proportions are either showing you averages, or a very specific idea of an idealized body. Actual bodies are much more varied than that.
So don't forget to draw from observation, and remember that humans aren't mass produced mannequins. Delight in our variation. Because it's supposed to be there.

reading poetry forces you to ask wrenching, necessary, impossible questions, like "is the author stupid? or am I?"

Y'all so I heard a concert where a cellist, like A SKILLED, GOOD, PROFESSIONAL CELLIST played a fauré piece. I remarked to my cello professor (also there for the concert) that I wasn't too big a fan of faurés cello rep, to which this man says "well nobody would when it's played like that" LIKE HELLO?! (to an extent i agree with him but like what was that)
I must stress this was on a technical level one of the better performances I've seen. every note was well placed, well dynamic'ed and played with good tone.
Prof hated the fauré THAT MUCH based JUST on *interpretation*
there WAS phrasing there WAS color change there WAS an overall sense of musical continuity and most importantly the performer KNEW WHAT HE WANTED OUT OF THE PIECE AND HE GOT IT
it was, by my metrics for what makes a good performance regardless of my preference, a good performance
but apparently he did it wrong ROFL better luck next time dude
#cello#fauré#classical music#gabriel fauré#his sicilliene for cello still slaps though#or maybe that's just noastalgia cuz i played it a while ago
