This writing is inspired by one of @ren-c-leyn ‘s short stories. It gave me a bit of inspiration so I decided to write something original for once.
“Who are you?” The young... cat? Bat? Hybrid? Whatever, asked the small being in front of her. It had abruptly appeared to her while she was chilling in an alleyway.
The hybrid in question stood on two legs, as did all her species, but she was different. A small tail, orange fur coat with tabby markings, and golden slitted eyes were all cat traits, but a large, almost pig-like nose, wings, and big ears all were traits of a bat. She was wearing a pastel pink hoodie with baby blue sleeves and light yellow hood, light blue denim shorts, small, light pink heart piercings and a cute little light yellow bow around her neck, like a choker. She appeared to be fourteen years old.
The deity in question resembled a teru teru bōzu, but dark brown like dirt, small green insect wings on its back, and a small blue flower growing on its head. Its eyes were the same color as the flower, and it looked at the hybrid with bright eyes. Smiling cheerfully, it answered,
“I’m Brunn, and I have a quest for you! One that will earn you honor, power, and love!”
The hybrid sighed and rolled her eyes, causing Brunn to falter slightly.
“Alright, what’s your tragic backstory and who’s in trouble?”
Brunn cleared his throat and began, “It all began whe-“
He was interrupted by a fake snore from the kid, and before he could continue, she interrupted once more,
“Yeah, I’m bored, get to the part where your god dies gruesomely in a bloody war, I wanna hear the details of that,”
Brunn looked almost startled at the kid’s request.
“There’s no bloodshed or death-“
“Then get lost. I don’t need honor, only gasoline, matches, and food,”
Both went silent after that. The hybrid narrowed her eyes and smirked. Then a voice from above called out.
“Sunbeam! Two kids moved in next to the brats’ house!”
Both Sunbeam and Brunn looked up to see a bipedal crocodile, around Sunbeam’s age, perching on a balcony.
“Cool, go survey and see whether they’re worth messin’ with,” Sunbeam called back. The crocodile leapt down onto the lid of the dumpster, then dashed off.
“Now, back to your little request,” Sunbeam growled as she turned back to the earth spirit, a large grin on her face, revealing long canines.
Brunn was no longer smiling. A rather neutral look sat on his face. He then began speaking once more,
“You could be a hero,”
“Don’t wanna be a fucking hero,” Sunbeam growled as she strutted closer to Brunn.
“Now get lost before you lose your pathetic life.”

Then, it stopped.
No... those weren’t ticks or tocks...
Those were footsteps.
Static echoed in the distance as Mario’s eyes snapped open and panickedly darted around.
A familiar song began to play...
“I know~ you belong~ ! To some~ ! Body new~ ! But tonight~! You belong~...
To me~”
Tick, tock, tick, tock. Mario counted the ticks, and he counted the tocks.
Tick, tock, tick.
Wait- was that a tick instead of a tock- no, can’t be. The rhythm matched his heartbeat- tick, tock, tick, tock. How much longer? The ropes squeezed his arms and chest as he struggled to fill his chest with air. How much longer?
Tick, tock, tick.
He’d stopped calling for help hours ago. Or minutes ago? It felt like years to Mario. His head swirled from the constant tick, tock, tick. How much longer until the gears crushed him? How much longer? Or perhaps it was never meant for him to die there, but rather be driven to insanity by the tick, tock, TICKING in his ears as he slowly starved to death?
Mario closed his eyes. Tick, tock, clock.

How long has it been since his initial murder suicide?
The house was as empty and silent as before, yet Mario didn’t feel alone.
He’s right there. He’s right there behind you and he’s going to kill you.
Another perfect day. Maybe he’d ask Peach out... She knows what you did. She knows, she knows...
Maybe he’d go visit the mansion and spruce it up a little, Not even the Poltergust would save you. Murderer.
Yeah... today was a perfect day to do whatever. Maybe you could kill her too. Put her out of the misery you caused her.
...
...
That choking feeling is back...
Luigi finally confesses his love for Princess Peach. Their love is strong and beautiful; and makes a certain relative jealous.
One night, Mario decides he’s had enough of empty walls and lonely feelings, and does something he knows he’ll regret.
