Reflection on Researching Marco Cheatham and Its Influence on My Poster Design

As a first-year communication design student, exploring the work of designers like Marco Cheatham has provided valuable insights into incorporating motion and dynamic elements into my poster design.

Marco Cheatham is known for his innovative approach to motion design and visual storytelling. Cheatham’s ability to incorporate motion into static designs makes his work stand out. His use of contrast in colors, shapes, and motion creates a rhythmic visual experience that keeps the viewer engaged.

Influence on My Poster Design

Reflecting on the insights gained from Marco Cheatham’s work, I have identified several ways to incorporate motion and dynamic elements into my poster design:

Adding Motion Elements: Inspired by Cheatham’s work, I plan to integrate subtle motion elements into my poster. This could include animated rotating or falling coffee beans or words that highlight important information and add a layer of interactivity.

Research

I was stuck on on how to design my type creatively. So I did some research from the TDC Competition 2023 Utah Jazz Work.

Critical Reflection

I found their use of composition and contrast to be particularly inspiring for my poster design.

Use of Composition

The Utah Jazz posters demonstrated a masterful use of composition that balanced complexity with clarity. The interplay between typography, imagery, and negative space created a dynamic yet harmonious flow that I aimed to emulate in my own work.

Balanced Layout: The Utah Jazz posters effectively used a balanced layout to create a sense of order and hierarchy. Inspired by this, I ensured that my poster design included essential elements such as a clear focal point, well-defined sections, and a cohesive structure. This helped in presenting the information in a more organized and visually appealing manner.

Strategic Placement: The strategic placement of elements in the Utah Jazz designs influenced me to be more deliberate with the positioning of text and images in my poster. I experimented with various arrangements to find a layout that both highlighted key information and maintained visual interest.

What Is Working

Color Palette: I got inspiration for my colour palettes from a cup oflatte. The warm, earthy tones effectively evoke the cozy and inviting atmosphere of a café, aligning well with the theme of coffee culture.

What Is Not Working

Text Overload: Despite the strengths of the color palette, the poster suffers from having too many words. The excessive amount of text makes the poster appear cluttered and overwhelming, detracting from its visual appeal and making it difficult for viewers to quickly grasp the main message. This issue highlights the need for a more concise and focused approach to the text, ensuring that the key points are communicated effectively without overwhelming the audience.

To improve the poster design, I will:

In this design project, I decided to incorporate elements from my research, specifically playful shapes and vibrant colors, to create a more engaging and visually appealing poster.

Important information did not stand out as much as intended, making it challenging for viewers to quickly grasp the essential points. I aimed to enhance its informational content by adding more text. My goal was to provide a comprehensive and engaging experience for the viewer. Initially, this approach seemed promising as it allowed me to include detailed explanations and context for the visuals.

However, upon reviewing the final design, I realized that the excessive text made the poster resemble a menu rather than a cohesive visual poster. The added words overwhelmed the layout, detracting from the intended impact of the imagery and key messages. The text-heavy design also disrupted the visual hierarchy, making it difficult for viewers to navigate and absorb the information effectively.

What went right in this process was my intent to enrich the poster with meaningful content, reflecting my dedication to thorough communication. Additionally, this experience taught me the importance of balance in design, emphasizing how crucial it is to maintain clarity and simplicity while conveying information.

Moving forward, I plan to refine my approach by focusing on concise and impactful text that complements the visuals rather than competes with them. This experience highlighted the need for a harmonious balance between text and imagery to create an effective and engaging poster.
