Malcolm McCormick, formally known as Mac Miller, was a rapper from Pittsburgh out of the Squirrel Hill area. Growing up in a close knit jewish community, Mac always seemed a bit off as he cared more about rapping in school lunches or over the loudspeakers at middle school basketball games. His mixtape K.I.D.S. which stands for “Kickin’ Incredibly Dope Shit” was the project that put Mac on the map as another serious rapper out of Pittsburgh. Perhaps his biggest leap into fame was when he released the number one independent album, “Blue Slide Park”. Macs style was very off the wall, and could shift from very up beat party tracks to deep, dark, and disturbing tracks. Unfortunately, Mac Miller was found dead on September 7th of 2018 in his studio apartment. However, his legacy continues on especially in the Pittsburgh community. Blue Slide Park is now formally named “Mac Millers Blue Slide Park.” Some of his hit songs are “Donald Trump”, “Loud”, “Koolaid and Frozen Pizza”, “Thumbalina”, and “Brand Name”. RIP Mac Miller

Cameron Jibril Thomaz is an extremely influential rapper from right here in the Pittsburgh area, Hazelwood to be more specific. This is an artist I have been listening to since 5th grade, and someone who has influenced me greatly. He first put himself on the map with his mixtape “Prince of the City”. Shortly after, he dropped “Prince of the City 2″. in 2009, he released the sole mixtape that put him on the map called “Flight School”. Shortly after dropping mixtape after mixtape Wiz Khalifa became mainstream, as he released songs that topped the music chars such as “Roll Up”, “On My Level”, and “Taylor Gang”. As of now, Wiz has 3 albums that have gone multi platinum and four singles as well. A hometown rapper who shows continuous love for his home city of Pittsburgh, Wiz Khalifa is currently at the top of the game and one of the most respected rappers.

Victor Santiago, Jr. is a rapper and political influencer from New York City. Formally known as Noreaga, and then known as N.O.R.E, he was a huge rapping success and one of the more prominent rappers in the group called DefJam. Christopher George Latore Wallace was a rapper from the early 90s out of Brooklyn New York. In the hip hop/ rap world he was known as The Notorious B.I.G. Biggie, Biggie Smalls, or baby biggie. His style was unique because he often rapped about very dark times, such as in his one song “Suicidal Thoughts”. When Biggie started rapping, it was at a time when the west coast dominated the rap game. With his album “Ready to Die” he put the east coast back on the map. While in Los Angeles one week, Biggie was shot and killed in a drive by shooting. Six days after his death, his album “Life After Death” was released. This hit number 1 on the US billboards and is one of the few hiphop albums to ever reach diamond status. Some of his most famous songs are “Juicy”, “Hypnotize”, and “Old Thing Back”.

Pictured above is the single greatest MC of all time. Yes, this is my opinion, but statistically it is factual that he is the best. From Detroits 8 mile, almost everyone knows the story of Marshal Mathers. He first saw crazy fame when he won a grammy from his first LP, “The Slim Shady” which was released in 1999. Eminem holds the record for most Diamond albums by any artist in the hip-hop/rap game with 2 albums that made it to Diamond status.

Nas is one of the most influential rappers that there has ever been. The first New York rapper to ever rap with Doctor Dre, Nas brought an entirely new sound to Def Jam. His album “Illmatic” is respected and held as one of the greatest projects of all time, as it is still to this day praised by many artist. Was, or formally Nasir bin Olu Dara Jones has released 8 consecutive platinum albums. Some of my personal favorite Nas songs are “Memory Lane (Sittin in Da Park), “Hustlers”, and “Halftime”.

The Sex Pistols were an English punk rock band that formed in London in 1975. They weren't just any band however, as they are credited with starting the punk movement in the UK. Unfortunately, at the end of one of their craziest American tours, the band announced the bands break up at the conclusion of the tour. Some of their best songs are “Bodies” and “Anarchy in the UK”.

They have two gold albums, eight multi platinum albums, as well as two diamond albums. They were also just recently inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame. The band was also ranked number 5 of Americans greatest rock bands of all history.

The Clash was an English rock band. In 1977, they rose to fame with the release of their British Punk Rock album named after themselves, “The Clash”. This music was heard in the states, but it wasn't until 1979 that the band achieved a great deal of fame in America, when they released their third album called “London Calling”. Some of their most famous songs are “Rock The Casbah”, and “Should I Stay or Should I Go”.

The Ramones were an American punk band that I feel greatly exemplifies what punk music meant at the time. The band had a sort of, “I dont care”, “Whats the worst that could happen?” type of attitude. Most famous for their single “Blitzkrieg Bop”, the band has performed more than 2,263 concerts. This meant that they were on tour for virtual 22 years. The fact that they toured for so long only adds to the fact that they are one of the most original American Punk bands.

David Bowie was an English songwriter, performer, and eventually an actor. David Bowie was chosen because his style of performing was something new. Hearing his music wasn't enough; in order to experience his true talent and genius you had to see him live. His shows consisted of him dressing himself up, wearing lipstick. This can be described essentially as the “Glam Rock Era”. Some famous songs by David Bowie are “Ziggy Stardust”, and “Modern Love”.

Queen is another band that will go down in history. With their lead singer Freddy Mercury, the band has released titles that have been made famous in a variety of ways. Their song “We Will Rock You” is one that most everyone has heard, even if they don't realize it. Stemming from London Britain, Queen rose to fame after their first album in 1973. Eventually things took off as they released their second album that contained hits like “We Are The Champions” and “Another One Bites The Dust”.

Marvin Gaye was a phenomenal Motown era American singer. His music plays in a great deal of big picture productions. His style was said to be seductive, and his song “Lets Get it On” is often portrayed with great sexual tension. However, Marvins story isn't exactly a happy one. Unfortunately, he was murdered by his father one night while he was trying to defend his mother from her.

Pictured above is debatably the greatest performer of all time. This is Michael Jackson. Michael stated performing as a young kid with his family, in a group called The Jackson Five. Soon enough he was on his own and taking over the world in his own respects. Not only did he make songs that people everywhere loved, his choreography and dance moves were something unseen. My favorite song of his, “Billie Jean”, was when he debuted one of his signature dance moves, the moon walk. Countless other forms of dancing seemed to create illusions as he moved across stage. Some of his other famous songs are “Dont Stop Til You Get Enough”, “Bad”, and “Thriller”.

One cannot speak about Motown without mentioning William Robinson Jr, better known as Smokey Robinson. He is credited as being the first Motown artist in America, and more than likely started a trend that many others would follow in their own quest for fame. It is also said that even if he didn't himself play a song, he wrote a great deal of the Motown music that is still famous today. Some of his most popular songs are “Cruising” and “Being With You”.
