BETH JOHANSSEN went to college when she was 16 and threw herself into her work and being better than everyone because she struggled to relate to them on a personal level.   beth got told from day one that it would be better for her to stay at home and do nothing by her parents,  but she pushed onwards anyway.   beth built her own company right out of college and got spotted and approached to work with nasa.   beth sold that company and went to work and literally built the tech that the HERMES runs on.   beth got picked to go to mars and is the youngest person of the team to be going.   beth managed to hack a spaceship while she was on it so that they could go back and save their friend.

he’s got himself well put together, he’ll admit.  really, he’s nerding out inside, wanting to ask all sorts of questions.   space has always fascinated him, and to be in the presence of someone who has been there and done the unthinkable?    it’s a bit of a star studded moment for him, and he almost wants to laugh at himself.   only he would be geeking out about something like this.  he’s earned his right, he supposes.   still, he shrugs his shoulders a little and gives the woman an apologetic look.   “  if you can hack stark’s espresso machine, i’m sure it’s good.   none of us have figured out how to do it. ”   he nods his head toward the door, guiding the woman out and into the common room.   instantly, the pressure from the other room fades.    “ so what’s space like? ”

“ i hacked a spaceship,   i’m sure we can do something about the coffee machine. ”    her smile comes naturally,   forcing herself to stop thinking about the terrible math and focus on having a conversation with a real person.   she knows that WATNEY is wanting a full report on everything cool she sees around here,   and no one says no to him,   especially since they did technically leave him back on MARS.    “  space is cool.  ”    he probably wants a better answer than that one,   "  i used to like looking down at EARTH when we could see it,  and trying to find where i grew up and remind myself how far i had come.    but in reality,   it’s just a lot of problem solving,   and when you solve enough,    you get to come home.    “    she’s finding it hard to find words that don’t sound like she’s speaking at a press conference,   but she does want to offer something a little better.    “  i have some pictures we took up there,    if you want to see them?  ”

Being to lazy to walk to the office, Matt decided to take the bus. A rare decision from the man, but today he made an exception. He truly used to hate public transportation. The collective noises from all the different passengers and their smells, both good and bad, wasn’t for the faint of heart, especially for someone with as good of senses as him. But over the years, as he mastered ways to block out noises and smells, he grew to accept public transportation for what it was. If only he could drive, he’d probably enjoy his way to work much more. As he sat, he snapped his attention to a voice ringing out to him. A woman. He offered a smile. There was no one who claimed the seat beside him, but to keep the charade that he couldn’t see a thing, he had to play the part.

❝  I’m not sure, ma’am. I’m positive there isn’t. You can have my seat if you’d like. Just in case the person comes back. This is New York and the people can get a bit nasty. Especially when it comes to Taxis, Buses and Trains. ❞

“ i’m sorry,    i didn’t ----- ”     those words hang heavy between them,    but she doesn’t make the effort to finish the sentence.    she’s sure he knows what she means.   so long with just five other people and she’s found herself putting her foot in it more often than she did before she left EARTH.   at least she can blame it on the fact that it’s currently early in the morning and she’s still not had her third coffee,   which is normally the one that brings her brain back to being functional. 

“  i’ll sit.   i’m sure i can deal with it if anyone comes back,   and i shouldn’t be too long anyway.   thank you,   though.  ”   she doesn’t want to kick him out of his seat when she’s the one who is creating the issue.    she’s tired, and not ready to face the day,   but she’s not that outwardly cruel.     “  it’s been a while since i’ve been in NEW YORK.  ”   or anywhere on EARTH,   but she doesn’t want to say that to the only person in the coffee shop who doesn’t know that she’s been on MARS.   “  i could do with a good welcome back.  ”

she’s happy to something to do,  something useful.   she’s never worked well under a feeling that she can do nothing,   it’s half the reason she’s found herself in computers.    she’s silent until she’s handed it to him,   until she knows that she can face him and make things easier.    “  my friend is a DOCTOR.  he’d have something really useful to say right now,   but you’re stuck with me.   i can fix a computer well,   though.  ”

“  guns,   yes.   that’s definitely something we have.  ”    it probably is something they have.   she can’t imagine that NASA would let them leave without some way of looking after themselves,   though she’s sure that COMMANDER LEWIS is the only one who would know about it.   the crew couldn’t be left to turn on each other,   not in a place as stressful as this.   “ how are you---- ”   motions at him.   no science she knows about explains how this man is standing in front of her.    “  here?  ”    a lame finish.    she’s not proud,   though she is currently having the shock of her life.

“ because we need them to fly. ”   she’s still confused about how this girl has just shown up on the HERMES,  but the CAPTAIN has gone to speak to the other she is with so BETH is meant to just keep her occupied and make sure she isn’t touching anything overly scientific.   they’re on their way home,    properly this time,   and she’s hoping that she might actually get to go there.   they don’t need another setback now,    not when WATNEY is finally back with them.

“ neither have i. ”   all her life she’s been black coffee and pouting until she’s able to think straight.   there were days when she was training when she wondered how she would even make it through the mornings,   and she was well practised at falling out her bed and lying on the floor until one of the CREW came to scrape her up.    she’s not exactly a morning person.   “  but we haven’t gone to bed yet and that place is open and i think that counts more as another dinner than breakfast.   i would know,   i went to MARS.  ”

“ but you are CAPTAIN AMERICA,   right?  ”  there are still things that BETH finds pretty cool,   even if she did do the whole ‘going to space’ thing.   she’s not surprised she’s ended up somewhere like this,   after all,  she did hack a spaceship and overrun NASA.   but for right now,   she’s pretty in awe of the living legend who seems to be standing in front of her.

beth loves old school video games.   there’s the ones that she had on her computer when she went up to mars and kept her sane.   she plays them all through the night when she’s having moments of stress and they’re one of the only ways she can shut her brain off for a little while.

“ pretty sure he doesn’t. ”   bucky’s eyes run along the screen once more, not wanting to interrupt the agent that’s trying his best to bring up information.  really, he’s prefer to do this all himself; he knows coding and algorithms — they’ve been embedded since the days of the winter soldier.  turning to look at the woman and choosing to ignore the soft cursing of the man in front of him, he tilts his head a bit.  “ he’s probably going to be here a while.  the hospitable thing is to ask you if you want anything, isn’t it? ”  there’s a small, playful smile there; really, he just wants an excuse to talk about space away from an audience that will judge him later.

she wants to go over and correct the math,  though she’s supposing that would fall under the ‘don’t be a smartass’ rule that WATNEY gave her when she called and told him she was coming out here.    he wants the whole rundown on the SUPERHERO thing,   but she knows no one will put him anywhere near anything dangerous;   not while he’s still the golden boy.     “  depends.    how’s the coffee around here?   ”    she can’t abide bad coffee,   even the HERMES had it’s own espresso machine to make her feel more at home.     she reckons a place like this can afford to get her something that she doesn’t want to spit out.    she is an ASTRONAUT after all,    hacked a spaceship while in it and all that.

“  you should notdo that. ”    she’s definitely sure that in any situation calling an ex would be a bad idea,   but when he’s had this many —-     it can only be terrible.    not that she’s had much experience with ex’s;    there was always some goal to reach,   some aim to get to.    she knows how it’s been for her SISTER though,    and she wouldn’t wish those conversations on anyone.    “  we should get pizza and you should give me your phone so that you can not do that.  ”

hand wiggles while the contents of the bottle slosh to the sides.   she laughs with the motion,   standing in the side of JESS’S office.   it’s been a long day,   and teaching classes in the city only seems to become a way for people to come and gape at the ASTRONAUT GIRL who hacked the spaceship while she was up there.   she misses working with people who know this might really affect their lives.    “  come and find out.  ”     she dares her,  looking for the excitement she misses.
