TATE
Going to galleries and museums at the start of a new project is I feel so useful in aiding with initial ideas and planning. The trip to the tate modern really gave me a lot of inspiration for the short one week project we are under taking. Before I arrived I had some idea of where my project might lead me but now my ideas have changed.
A piece that stood out for me was this installation film made by John Akomfrah called ‘The Unfinished Conversation.’ What captured me with this isntallation was the way the managed to harmonise the two screens with each other. Even with two different clips yet they seemed to show the balance between both sides of the story which appeared to be about the resistance to the political direction. Along side the old culture of the country.

The ability to coney two stories in the one installation for me is something very interesting and something I will be taking into consideration for the this project.
Another piece of work that I thought I could really make a connection with was this piece below. Created by Seifollah Samadian called A Visual Narrative of Revolution.
Tumblr media
Samadian’s peice takes up a whole wall in the tate each page shows a different part of the Iranian revolution. Almost like a zine it captures a very personal approach through the work of collaging. Providing a very clear narrative of the intensity of this revolution that was happening at the time. I feel I can use that idea of conveying the narrative through the work of a zine almost.

The Brief
After having read through the brief and the handbook provided for the first week  my initial thoughts on dissent and resistance felt empty. It was only when I connected these words with my feelings and views about society I was able to make some connections. I had already had such feelings about the way our world works and what I believe is wrong and what is right.
To gather more information and opinions before I started my first full day at ravensbourne I asked friends, family and myself questions about what they or I want to change. Questions such as ‘what annoys in the society we live in today?’ A of friend mine answers with, “The fact that as a man you are expected to fill the boots of the alpha male, showing no weakness. Meaning having to hold back particular feelings and emotions from the outside.” I recored the information gathered in my sketch book as shown below.  A wonderful answer as much as this is saddening. However, it made me realise how these social trends, you could say, how much of an effect they can have on people.
Tumblr media
Immediately I knew that I was going to capture whatever I decide to capture through film or photography in one way or another. With the right starting point I feel I could tell a great story and depict what really annoys me in the society we are in. The next steps will reveal where the journey is going.
