Joel Parés is an internationally recognized photographer and digital artist based in Dallas, TX who specializes in advertising and composites. He grew up watching his father take pictures with his 35mm camera and listening to his mother tell stories of her modeling days in Puerto Rico. This combination of image and story led to the use of the narrative throughout his work. While serving in the U.S. Marine Corps, he traveled the world and discovered his passion for photography. The exposure to different cultures around the world has expanded his vision to endless storytelling possibilities. As a Marine, he learned that the smallest details matter, a principle that has helped sharpen his technical skills and creativity.

BEFORE & AFTER: I only used sunlight and a reflector because I didn't want to move the lighting I had just set up for the main shot. I wanted the sunlight and flare in the shot, but when I exposed for the face correctly the sunlight blew out too much of the background and had more lens flare than I wanted, so I just lowered the exposure enough to not blow out the background while keeping enough detail in the model to bring out in post. I trusted what I knew I could do in post, which is a risky thing to do at times. Practicing and experimenting a lot with the camera, lighting, and retouching allows you to know your limitations, allowing you to make a more accurate judgment call on what you can and cannot do. #joelparesphotography (at www.joelpares.com)

This year I was invited to the 2015 PDN Photo Annual Event in NYC because my series Judging America was selected as one of the best series of the year and put in PDN Magazine. To my surprise, at the event I was presented with another award, the DIMA (Duggal Image Maker Award) for Best Overall Series. Since I wasn't able to fly to NYC to receive my award at the event, I just received it in the mail. A very nice DIMA plaque and a very nice 20" x 30" Plexi-Mounted image from my series. I will post my acceptance speech shortly. #joelparesphotography #judgingamerica (at www.joelpares.com)

Happy Fathers Day! To my Father, the man who has shown me, by example, what it is to be a real man. I am blessed to have a father like him.
