FILM REVIEW: Three Colours - Red
’Red’ could be interpreted as a projection of the past, a parallel universe, a crack in time which sets Valentine on her best life path. However, Kieslowski’s finale product doesn’t explicitly present nor face the audience with these emblematic or intangible ideas and instead displays the story of a woman who saves a man corrupt with the power and mindset of a God.
Considering the character of le Judge as a Godly presence throughout the film, a man who has decided the fate of countless lives and in his old age continues to hold control over his neighbours by spying on them, you could say he’s become a God without a purpose. By restraining his feelings towards others, the power he holds is the absolute antithesis of what a ‘God’ should be: an old bitter man who has become so bored and corrupt with his own life that he must keep his hand held over strangers' lives. Counter to that, Valentine is morally everything a ‘God’ should stand for and that’s what makes these two polar opposite characters work so well. Her character is presented as human as possible having internal doubts, yet is always driven by her empathy to contribute to finding the happiness of others.
Le Judge knows that he’s connected to Valentine on some deeper astrological level and perhaps realises she’s the one thing which could have led him astray from the mundane and lonely life he’s currently living. Valentine may always be destined to be a world-renowned star yet the core of the story isn’t about Valentines' life, it’s about her connection to a man who needed to be reminded that at the end of the day, he is human.

EXERCISE 2 - DOCUMENTING A SPACE
The views at the top are often times the most fulfilling. The climb is difficult. The time it takes to get there can be strenuous. The wind may blow branches in your way. The ground may even seem like it's against you. However, the beauty at the top can only be appreciated by the journey that gets you there.

Required Reading Summary
The process of filmmaking is complex, involving a blend of artistic, technical, and business elements. Cinematographers play a crucial role in bridging the gap between the practical aspects of using cameras and understanding digital components, and the artistic side of creating visual worlds and storytelling. They also take on the role of amateur psychologists, particularly in collaborating with directors. While some directors effectively communicate their vision, others may need the cinematographer to interpret and enhance their visual concepts. Cinematographers must fill in the blanks, offering artistic inspiration and leadership, sometimes requiring diplomatic skills. Ultimately, their role is to bring the director's vision to life on the film set, turning artistic ideas into reality and making dreams come alive.
