The guys at Two Robbers asked me to illustrate the packaging for a new range of craft hard seltzer, and being from Scotland they then had to explain what craft hard seltzer is. It’s like a can of your regular fizzy booze, but healthy. Nice! Each flavour has its own cross-section illustration of an apartment block, filled with different tenants living their lives. It was super fun to get right into the details of an illustration, adding little narrative elements and what-not. Each apartment block also has two robbers hiding in plain sight, as the guys who started the company were robbed twice in the first couple weeks of moving to Philadelphia, thus inspiring their brand name and story. Rad!

Well that was intense. And fun. Funtense. First shot on a piece this size, learnt about 8000 lessons on how not to approach large scale murals halfway through, but happy with the end result. Thanks to Six Degrees North Edinburgh for having me!

10/52: Okja (2017) - ★★★.
Review: “What an odd wee film. Good, but odd. The believability of Okja as a semi-pig hippo-beast was so impressive for being rendered in cgi. This was one of those films that thinks of all the proper ways to use cgi for cinematic good. Was so impressive. Also a stellar performance from Seo-Hyeon Ahn. A slightly disappointing performance from both Swinton, Gyllenhaal and Dano, as their characters all lost their novelty halfway through. Bain Hee-Bong as the grandfather was also so good. Very genuine interactions with his on-screen g-daughter.
The scenes towards the end were very sobering and hard to take, although I kind of wish there was more weepiness and teary moments, but the film seemed all over the place in what it was trying to say. However, still an entertaining watch.” Watched on 10/2/2018.

9/52: The Big Sick (2017) - ★★★★ Review: “Maaaaan. This was lovely. Just LOVELY! 4 unreal performances from both sets of parents. Everyone’s stories were tied together so well. Parental banter brought so many laughs too. Misty eye moments all throughout, with a good dose of reality mixed in so that they last longer than the end credits.” Watched on 4/2/2018

8/52: There Will Be Blood (2007) - ★★★★½ Review: “I find it absolutely crazy that Dillon Freasier has only ever done this film and that’s it. He absolutely blew me away with the nuances in his facial expressions and silent anger. Guess that’s testament to PTA’s directing skill. This is my first proper PTA experience, and I’ve been looking forward to it for a while as the Glasgow Film Theatre was showing it in 35mm. All this hype, and it still managed to live up to it. Fair play man. Fair play. Also my first DDL outing, and he blew my mind. Hilarious accent tho. Paul Dano disturbed me deeply. As a churchgoer, creepy, false church leaders get right under my skin, and this was in the best way in this film. Proper interesting comparing the lack of morality with the pastor and the oil man.” Watched on 30/1/2018

7/52: In The Loop (2009) - ★★★★ Review: “A glorious watch for such a time as this. Malcolm Tucker lives up to the hype, and the dialogue in this is next level. Every sentence could be a ringtone or YouTube dance remix. Also loved Steve Coogan’s character, and James Gandolfi’s. Great.” Watched on 22/1/2018

6/52: The Founder (2016) - ★★½
Review: “This was cheesy. Processed hamburger cheesy. Michael Keaton did good but the twangy soundtrack made it pretty insufferable. As well as the mega cliche dialogue in parts. But hey. Good story."

5/52: Hacksaw Ridge (2016) - ★★★½
Review:
“1st Act: dialogue was a bit corny in places, and felt a bit like you could tell it was done by someone who dedicated a whole film to the passion of the Christ. I found the faith aspect really interesting as some of the issues thrown up in the film I think about myself, but was maybe a bit simplified/reduced. Andrew Garfield did however make a very likeable protagonist within the first 5 minutes, and Vince Vaughan can do no wrong in my eyes. Also Hugo Weaving did an amazingly heartbreaking performance of an abusive father that I actually felt sympathy for.
2nd Act: this was equally thrilling and hard to watch, beautifully rounded off with the real life interview clips. This made me just amazed at the story. I’ve seen enough fruit coulis limbs for a while though. Wince inducing gore. Also very odd focus on Japanese ceremony at the end. All in all, a good watch.”

4/52: Bernie (2011) - ★★★½
Review: “I watched this whilst doing some work on my laptop, but even still I was captivated by it. Especially when I found out it was based on real life. That made it equally dark and funny in good measure. Jack Black as a Methodist mortician is a performance I didn’t know I wanted in my life. He is also so good at singing hymns. Sing me hymns, Jack! Really enjoyed the supporting cast too, very believable.”

3/52: Molly’s Game (2017) - ★★★
Review: “Lil bit overhyped, but still enjoyed. Great acting and some quality bursts of dialogue, but not enough ZING POP POOEE. Someone said it’s like ‘the female Wolf of Wall Street’ but it’s a lot less exciting. That was the only expectation I had and it didn’t meet it, but besides that, it delivered on everything else. Jessica Chastain was alright. Idris Elba was great. But Chris O’Dowd’s convincing American accent stole the SHOW!”

2/52: Be Kind Rewind (2008) - ★★★★.
Review: “Jack Black makes me proper laugh out loud on my own, which is a great and cherished thing. This was great. Was craving more movie making montages but probably was just the right amount. Great supporting cast, directed in a way that felt properly natural and like they were real people partaking in a film being made by Jack Black, Mos Def and Danny Glover. Huh. Ain’t that funny."

1/52: American Psycho (2000) - ★★★★.
Review: “Christian Bale at the best I’ve seen him. Jeepers CREEPERS. Such a convincing portrayal of absolute insanity, almost helping me understand that I can never understand a psychopath like Patrick Bateman. Funny, terrifying, and surprising in great measure. Thoroughly enjoyed the business card patter also.”

This is part of a project where I’m trying to watch 52 films I’ve never seen before in 2018, and writing a little something about what I thought about them, as well as making an inky poster alongside.
