Inspired by Jeff Koons and Ai Wei Wei
With his "Circle of Animals / Zodiac Heads“ from the Chinese zodiac,Ai Weiwei addresses the historic ransacking of the fountain at the summer palace Yuanming Yuan in Beijing by French and British troops in 1860. Jeff Koons describes his balloon animals in a personal way: “I’ve always enjoyed balloon animals because they’re like us. We’re balloons. You take a breath and you inhale, it’s an optimism. You exhale, and it’s kind of a symbol of death.”

Inspired by HIrst and Kusama In Scene 9 we read that Damien Hirst’s Gagosian Gallery displayed “326 paintings in eleven venues in eight cities around the world. Painters working for Hirst have made some 1400 paintings with multicolored polka dots laid out on mechanical grids.” We have also seen that works by Yayoi Kusama are focused on “polka dots.” Using Hirst’s spot paintings or Kusama’s polka dots for inspiration, you will create your own “spot” drawing, painting or collage to photograph and submit to Canvas. There are many ways to approach this. You can simply draw circles and arrange or decorate as you wish, then photograph on your phone and upload. You can make perfect circles using image editing software like Photoshop, Illustrator, PixlrX . Try collage if all else fails!

COLLABORATIVE RAINBOW COLLAGE
In class assignment: Photograph objects in the environment that are a color assigned to you (at least 2 photos); I don’t expect you to stay in a group. Feel free to roam the campus, but don’t go too far as we will meet in Lab C at 12:10 to prepare for a short critique. You may stay inside the building if you wish.
