Tales of Terror From Toyko and All Over Japan (2004) -Review
Tumblr media
“Tales of Terror from Tokyo and All Over Japan” Written By: Ryuta Miyake, Hirokatsu Kihara & Ichiro Nakayama Directed By: Several Directors
First Impressions: I’ve heard of the TV show and saw an episode so I really wanted to see the movie.
Review:
“The Night Watchman” (Directed by: Akio Yoshida)- The first story starts off with yet another guy quitting their job as a night watchman for an abandoned building as it’s being torn down. The boss is very confused on why everyone quits as none of them really leave any explanation expect ‘All in order…but there was a woman/man/children.’
I really liked this segment actually. I thought it was going to be good due to already seeing the show a few times and I liked how the stories are well rounded and to the point. The main guard that been there for a while is definitely my favorite as he’s so optimistic about the ghosts that haunt him. At first, you get the sense he doesn’t believe they exist or can’t see them but then you catch him pushes the air back as if he’s pushing faces off his shoulders. Then you know, he can see them as clearly as anyone else. ‘It’s all in your mind’ he keeps saying. It’s kind of cute that he’s that naïve of the trouble he’s in.
The ending was ok. I’m not too sure what I would have preferred but I think something else should had happened. It felt a little predictable to be honest but in all a solid short story.
“Wisps of Smoke” (Directed by: Kosuke Suzuki)- I’m not a fan of this one although having someone vanish into nothing but smoke does sound scary it did not hold up as well as it sound. There’s really nothing to talk about here, three girls go for a ride only to get lost and have a mysterious sound chase them down until they vanish into smoke…Doesn’t sound like much to begin with.
“Gloves” (Directed by: Hirohisa Sasaki)- So there’s this woman who is still in a way friends with benefits with her ex-boyfriend and while he’s dating a new woman she starts to have these strange dreams where she is been strangled by a pair of white gloves. That dream slowly becomes reality as marks start to appear on her neck and the sensation gets stronger every night.
This story is more funny then it is scary as the appearance of floating white gloves just makes you want to laugh at the bad special effects they tried to do to make it seem like there was no body attached to the gloves. I have to say this story is one of my less favorites of the eight.
“The Weight” (Directed by: Kosuke Suzuki)- I can without doubt, for the first time in my life say I don’t get it. I just don’t. I have so many questions about this story like why is this guy sitting on people to begin with? Who is he? Why disappear only to come back to sit on the kid? Was he gonna kiss her?
I don’t know but this segment is the craziest thing I’ve ever seen. Maybe I’m giving Japan to much praise….
“Full-Length Mirror” (Directed by: Ryuta Miyake) Two goofy looking boys close to graduation decide to do the one thing every teenage wants to do before taking the final walk-look into a cursed mirror. That’s right it’s one of those. It doesn’t end well and neither is this review for this short. Well at least you get a good jump scare out of it.
Boo!
“Line of Sight” (Directed By: Keisuke Toyoshima) A school girl accidentally captures a dead nurse in her video while recording for a school project and now the nurse is out for revenge. This segment is one of my favorite of the eight due to that grow sense of fear and dread the character is going though. Once you finally get to see the nurse in action then it’s game over for everyone.
“The Promise” (Directed by: Keita Amemiya) A young guy goes to house sit for his uncle who makes him promise to always answer when he is called. The guy agrees even though he’s very confused on what his uncle is telling him. A voice calls from the ceiling inside the apartment and the young guy answers every time expect once then chaos ensues. The voice continues to call repeatedly until he is face to face with a tall spirit.
It’s left to the imagination what she did to teach him a lesson but we do learn that even after he leaves and gives the keys back to his uncle that he can still hear her call to him.
I liked this one but not as much as “Line of Sight” due to so much anticipation for this ghost to appear only for her not to do anything once she shows up. Still worth watching.
“Hisao” (Directed by: Shunichi Hirano) Hisao is more of a family drama than a horror segment as it follows a mother who is still dealing with the murder or suicide (I’m not sure which to call it.) of her only son, Hisao.
We watch as she holding a conversion with someone we can never see due to camera angles and trying to clean up water from wherever the other person is walking. Until we find out that she’s actually talking to her son’s spirit as his ghost leaves behind water all over the house because of the fact he was drowned.
She expresses her anger towards those who caused his death and her desire to take revenge but Hisao tells her no. The mother then hears about the death of the two who caused Hisao’s death on the television and calls Hisao a good son but then commits suicide to be with her son.
This segment is a sad one but not fitting of a horror anthology film.
Final Impression: Not a top favorite. I can’t say I’ll watch again but I’m still interested in the series. I suggest trying that out first.

The Smiling Man (Short Film) Short Review
Directed by: A.J. Briones
youtube
Rating: Thumbs Down Timing: 7 mins -This is not one of my favorites. One reason is that I am partial to another short entitled “The Smiling Man” and I’m told that there are a few out there. This particular one includes a young girl actress who is not all that great but a ‘villian’ who is very enthusiastic, which shows in their interactions how very much on different levels they are. The story isn’t all that great but the villain is very disturbing.

Vicious (Short Film) Short Review
Directed By: Oliver Park
youtube
Rating: Thumbs Up Timing: 12 mins -Now I don’t know which came first the “Lights Out” short or this one but they’re both forces to be reckoned with as they effective at hitting us in one of our most primal fears, darkness. Since this one is longer then the Lights Out short then you get to see surprisingly more character depth. This whole short seemed like a legendary first kill scene in a full-length horror movie. Please if you liked “Lights Out” then you’ll love “Vicious”

Unknown Number (Short Film) Short Review
Directed by: David Nguyen
youtube
Rating: “Thumbs Down” Timing: 7 Mins -I didn’t like this one. In a time with Caller ID on every cell phone and the easiness of blocking numbers, this short came off too boring for comfort. She could have easily blocked the number and the situation would have been avoided. I think the focus should have been the entity in the house instead of the phone. Plus the entity when finally shown in full comes off as cartoonish rather than scary.

Bedfellows (Short Film) Review
Directed by: Drew Daywalt
youtube
Rating: “Thumbs Up” Timing: 2 mins -If you find the story of ‘Who was phoned?’ scary till this day then this short story is for you. I personally find it kind of funny after the initial scare. Give it a try, you’ll either laugh or get scared maybe even both.

Suspiria (1977)
September 26, 2016 Movie Of The Week
Italian horror maestro Dario Argento’s bewitching magnum opus Suspiria is one of the most atmospheric horror films ever made. Beautiful and bloody in equal measure, this one is required viewing for any die hard horror fan.
Suspiria tells the story of Suzy, an American ballet student who has just arrived in Germany to attend a prestigious school of dance, which… well, let’s just say the place isn’t quite what it seems. As her classmates begin to disappear one by one, Suzy must unravel the mysteries of just what diabolical deeds are occurring at the so called Tanz Dance Academy. It’s a slow burn that may seem a bit dated to some modern fans, sure, but when things boil over in the third act Suspiria delivers on its reputation and then some.
That being said, the real star of Suspiria isn’t the story. It’s the aesthetic. Full of shocking colors, unnatural patterns, and bizarre sets, the look of Suspiria has as much character as any of its actual characters. The Tanz Academy seems almost to live and breathe; its ornate decorum and eerie lighting, ever shifting from pinkish red to somber blue, give the school an ethereal, vaguely nightmarish quality that looms large over every scene, constantly reminding the viewer that something just isn’t right here. And believe me, it isn’t.
Accompanying the visual majesty of Suspiria is its fantastic musical score, one of the all time best in horror’s vast history of awesome scores, provided by the prog rock band Goblin. The score, especially its incredible title theme, sets the mood so beyond perfectly that it feels silly to describe it to you. Just listen for yourself. I’d throw that one up there with the Halloween and Friday the 13th themes of the world any day of the week. It gets under your skin and gives you the creeps in the best possible ways and I love it so much.
Honestly, that same line sums up Suspiria perfectly. It just has this wonderful way of getting under your skin and creeping you out. And what more can a horror fan ask for than that?
