Currently on view at Blum & Poe in Los Angeles, California is artist Friedrich Kunath's solo exhibition, "I Don't Know the Place, But I Know How to Get There."
Kunath utilizes a personal style of romantic conceptualism, layering poetic phrases with poignant, often melancholy imagery. The work embraces comedy and pathos, evoking universal feelings of love, hope, longing, and despair. The artist’s personal journey from Germany to Los Angeles plays a key role in his work, incorporating German Romanticism and western popular culture, with still life, cartoon imagery, commercial illustration, nature photography, and lyrical references.

A pierced bull’s heart. PITT RIVERS MUSEUM/UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD
Bull’s Heart Pierced With Spike, Age Unknown
As gnarly as this object is, it actually represents an attempt at counter-magic—protection from dangerous witches. This was found in the 1860s in the chimney of a house at Shutes Hill Farm, in Somerset, England. Often objects like this one would be planted at the vulnerable exits and entrances of homes to keep witches out.
