I spent 4+ years not commenting on fic very often. Then I dipped my toe in, and now I'm active in fandom and people... bake me cakes! It's fabulous!

You don't even have to create anything to get to this point – yes, I have made mood boards (and terrible memes), and started writing this year. But it isn't necessary. You can request stuff in stocking events / community prompts, you can cheer on your fave writers when they're working on something, comment on lovely art, rec the hell out of your favourite fics.

Fanwork is one half of a creative conversation around canon, it's meant to be engaged with. It's not content churned out by faceless creators. We're real people doing this in our spare time, and we want to know if something touched you. It doesn't mean you have to write a huge comment on every fic. A simple "loved this!" can work wonders.

current fan creation landscape is kinda like if you went to a party with a homemade cake and everyone takes a slice and silently thumbs up at you with no attempt to start a conversation except for occasionally some guy sits in the corner with a tape recorder critiquing the cake as though he was a restaurant critic and another guy is handing the cake to an uber driver like "yeah i need you to find a restaurant that makes cake like this so i can have more of it" and the only person that's talked to you in 30 minutes is a very sweet little guy who was like "hey i liked your cake" and then ran away apologizing for bothering you the moment you said thank you.

I think more historical fantasies and alt histories that have gay marriage be allowed should mess around with the societal implications of this. If your aristocracy allows gay marriage, why? As a release valve for inheritance problems, like monasticism was in parts of medieval Europe? As a way of removing your failchild from the line of succession by legally binding them to the failchild of your political ally, ensuring any offspring they both have will be illegitimate? How about a society where the lower classes are allowed to be gay but the nobility aren’t? Idk there’s just a lot of options that are more interesting than “homophobia just doesn’t real”

Unfinished Painting

The artwork titled 'Unfinished Painting' (pictured above) was created by Keith Haring in 1989. The purpose of the piece is to reflect the lives cut short by the HIV/AIDS epidemic. It represents the lost potential of those who died from the disease and the lack of care for it.

This disease disproportionately affects queer men like Haring. Due to this it wasn't taken seriously enough by governments, particularly in America. Keith Haring himself later died due to complications related to HIV/AIDS in 1990, just a year after he created the painting.

I find this painting and it's background extremely compelling. There is a whole generation of queer people, particularly AMAB, who are gone because of the negligence of governments and healthcare systems. They could have done so much but their lives were cut short in a cruel act of erasure.
