Blog 12
It is finally the last week of all the blogs and it’s off to Liverpool we go. However due reasons with work I was unable to attend the trip so I have chosen to write about the London design festival. The London design festival is a festival what’s name I keep hear being repeated over and over again so I decided to take a look due to me having a passion for all things design. From research I learnt that the London design festivals a festival that was set up to “promote London as the design capital of the world.” The festival is relatively huge as of 2017 the festival welcomed over 450,000 visitors which had travelled from over 75 different countries over the course of the 9 days the festival was running. The festival involved 45 talks and workshops from various graphic designers. However, the festival was first set up by Sir John Sorell and Ben Evans in 2003. Their initial concept was catch the eye of the greatest designers and build on London’s ever growing design movement. It was done to help join people to celebrate design as a whole and still 16 years down the line it is still going strong. This festival also sounds very inspiring due to in 2017 they held over 300 events and created 13 v and a projects in 2017. For me this design festival sounds very inspiring and motivating as you can talk and connect to top designers. It is also inspiring to e as a student because it is a festival that is trying to create a social change so that people know how much design affects the world and are trying to raise awareness of this to it receives more recognition whilst enabling itself to promote London as the design capital. Overall this festival appears to be very creative and inspirational and is a festival I wish to visit in person because who doesn’t want to say you’ve visited the festival which is aiming to promote London as the capital of the world.
Creative Distribution brief closed:
In reflection this module has been very eye-opening and challenging for me but I have to say it was worth it. This is because throughout this module I was able to learn new skills, from tutorials that I most likely wouldn’t have watched if it wasn’t for this module of work. I also learnt new team building skills which will help me in the future especially when it comes to employment as I now have better social skills when working within a team and I also learnt new skills and tips from the range of speakers that came to visit us at university. Furthermore, the speakers for me were very inspirational, in particular Miar for me was the speaker I felt I connected the most too as she broke down her process of work and how she got to where she is now and made the process look less daunting and she inspired me to keep going with my work and to push myself further so that I can become the best at what I do. In conclusion to my course work I feel happy with my outcomes as did plenty of research and experimentation. I also feel that with pushing myself harder I was able to create final out comes that I wouldn’t of ever thought I would be able to create. So even though I know I can still improve my work, I am happy with my final outcomes. Finally, I have to say to mention that this brief enabled me to take on a great opportunity of being able to get an insight to the life of a graphic designer as we was asked to go and visit a practitioner this for me was very helpful because I received tips off of my practitioner that I was able to take away which will hopefully benefit my work within the future. Lastly I have to mention my team that I was put in for the creative brief worked exceptionally well to a high professional standard. Furthermore, we all put in a large amount of effort, built good team building skills and built our communication skills as we all had to use networking sites to keep the group up-to-date on work and how we move forward. Overall this was a great experience and I feel I have benefited greatly from doing this unit of work. My plan from now on is to keep building my skills, these can be learnt from tutorials, friends or professionals, I want to also keep building my professional contacts through social media and from visits to design firms because I have realised this is a huge way of putting myself out there to gain work within the industry. I also now have planned 2 weeks work experience in July to with my old secondary school so I can gain better knowledge of the teaching world as well as put myself in a better position for if I do choose to apply for the teaching degree. Overall I have thoroughly enjoyed completing this unit of work for this semester and I have learnt a lot what I can now take away with me to use in the future.

Creative distribution final
This week it is the final presentation of our creative distribution brief. In the chat, the group arranged a meeting for the Thursday prior to presenting on the Friday. This was so we could all sit down together, check everything was to an exceptional standard and all take on assigned roles, so that we could create our final presentation. Prior to the meeting on the Thursday, I myself had been taking large amounts of time to experiment with type and different tutorials until I got the final outcome I desired. I had again been watching many tutorials on YouTube to learn new skills and techniques, but I also learnt about new possibilities I could achieve on illustrator such as the light bulb effect.
I decided to work with tutorials which I felt were fitting to my work and that also showed characteristics that were fitting to what subject my room number was representing. For example, with journalism, a main product that is used within it is paper. It is used in a huge number of ways from notes being taken on it to articles being printed on it. So from here I decided to look at a paper effect tutorial. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y75J5LE5iR0. I did this for all my room numbers so that I could create a room number which was visually pleasing but so it also represented the subject behind the number.
Eventually, after a lot of time watching tutorials and experimenting with illustrator, I was able to create my final pieces.
My first final outcome was for Ms114E, this room number is the journalism room. For this room number, I decided to go for a newspaper tear effect. This was because again, journalism is based heavily on the material of paper as it performs many functions within the subject. As you can see there are 2 layers which are overlaid, theses both have the room number on them but they are both indifferent typefaces. I did this to emphasise the tear effect which is running across the middle. For the tear effect I had to learn new skills using the shape builder tool in order to complete it. Another technique I had to use was using the grain tool. I felt the grain tool was an important element for this design because I feel it gave it a more authentic print effect look, as many newspapers look grainy instead of being to a high crisp standard. Furthermore, I feel the typeface used at the bottom of the number helps to give a professional feel which helps aid the fact that many people within journalism are people who are middle class. Overall I was happy with how my room number turned out because it is bold, creative, eye catching and mesmerising.
My next room number was MS101A and was for the subject ‘product design’. Here I have used several characteristics to represent what I felt the subject product design means. For example, as product design is hands on building and designing products, it uses a lot of resistant materials. For this, I decided to use a grey background to give a metallic feel to the room number, but also due to the materials in product design being mainly raw, the colours are usually organic and natural. So I feel the metallic look enables it to represent metal as this is a main material what is used within product design. Furthermore, the colour scheme gives an industrial look to the room number, which I feel is a characteristic what is related to graphic design. Furthermore, the typeface I decided to use has a sturdy appearance as it features more straight lines, this again is to give the number a manufacturing look. This is because with product design it is a subject where it is very hands on and you are constantly making new things out of raw materials. A technique that I learnt with making this room number was how to apply effects from the swatches panel into an already made shape. This came in useful for my room number as you can see half of the characters of my room number are made up of lines. I feel this effect was very good in helping the number stand out because it gives the number a quirky, modern feel to it to it.
Overall I was happy with my final outcome for this room number, however, if I was to redo it, I would try and make the background more impacting because I feel I focused more towards the meaning rather than how it visually looked.
For my final room number, I decided to create a lighting effect to represent the room number subject, which is interior design. I decided to go with an effect which has a soft, subtle appearance. This is because when I think of interior design I think of furnishings, mood lighting, etc. as well with interior design, it’s all about comfort for the person interacting with the space, so I decided my work needed to give a more friendly appearance. For this room number, I have followed a tutorial which allows you to achieve an appearance what looks similar to that of a light bulb glowing. I decided to go for this look because I feel it relates to interior design because lighting is a main factor within interior design sector and I feel the viewer would be able to make a visual connection from what the room number is visually showing and with the subject of the room number. This was the most time consuming out of all of the room numbers I had to complete. This was because it involved me learning new lots of new skills for example, at one point I had to make a paint brush in the same style as my typeface and to save it to my pre-sets. This, out of all the room numbers is my favourite because I like how the characters are glowing, I managed to achieve this by using highlights, outer glows and shadows and other techniques what I learnt from the YouTube tutorial. In reflection I feel this room number works really well as it meets the brief by being bright bold and eye catching, but it also represents the subject that the room number is and its visual appearance connect well together so that the viewer can gain a greater connection, so that they are more likely to remember the room number and its location which was one of our main aims to achieve.
With the Images I have included, you can see my blip par being made and the link my room number takes you to. You can see I decided to make my interior design room link to an Ikea advert, because it is funny to entertain the viewer but it also links to interior design as Ikea is known for its interior furnishing, fittings and furniture.
On Thursday, the whole group got together and created the presentation and prepared our speeches ready for our final presentation. Before we knew it, it was time to present. The presentation went well as everybody performed their roles and described their work as best as they could. I described my work how I have above, so Leo could get a good understanding for my work. As the presentation ended, we received our feedback and to our relief we passed. This was great news as all our effort individually and as a team paid off. Overall, I was happy with my work and how the presentation went, I understand that improvements can be made on my room numbers, but with watching tutorials I was able to learn new skills so that I was able to produce work I thought I wasn’t capable of. As well, the team I was placed in was great as we all cooperated really well and pushed each other to create the best work we possibly could. It also meant I was able to make professional contacts. Another benefit of this was it pushed me out of my comfort zone, especially with me being a shy person, and enabled me to build my confidence when working within a group. This is beneficial for me because it will help me in the future, especially when I am going and applying for jobs. In reflection I want to improve my social skills because I feel this is an area which I lack and it is very important within the design sector to have these skills so you can create professional contacts, as well as to aid you in connecting with your clients.

MA visual communication
This week we were joined by Tracey Tomlinson, she had come to visit us to talk to us about the Ma visual communication degree with derby university. She went on to talk about how the degree is studio practice based and it covers areas of graphic design, animation and illustration. We also learnt that the program is full time with you having to attend university one full day a week, there is also a part time role so you can take the course over two years and attend half a day each week. However, we learnt that if you decide to take the full time option you are also expected to put 2/3 days’ worth of work in.  Tracey also discussed that there are currently 25 students on the master’s route with about half o0f the graduates being form derby university. Furthermore, we were told that if you are a student from derby university and decide to take up the master’s route through the university then you would receive a fee reduction on your course. In fact, Tracey told us that this year the reduction fee was 25% which I thought was very good especially as the master’s degree makes you more marketable to companies and it allows you to gain a head start in graduate employment This leaves the course fees at £5760 for a Uk student. Tracey then went on to discuss what the university was looking for in a student. She stated that she and the university were looking for students who are passionate and ambitious about their course. For me it is graphic design and on reflect I feel I have the characteristics to be able to take on the master’s degree as I am very passionate about my course. I also feel that I would be able to make positive presence in the modern world of graphic design. Overall I feel I benefited from this lecture because I had never thought of doing a master’s degree purely because I knew nothing about it, but thanks to Debbie I now know enough so that I can consider doing a master’s degree within the near future.
Creative distribution brief.
For this week I had started to experiment with type on illustrator and I started to watch tutorial on YouTube. This helped me with techniques so that I was able to do my work to a higher standard. Here are some links to tutorials I worked with. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rt15_OclsyI&t=336s   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y75J5LE5iR0
From these tutorials I learned dome new skills such as the how to adequately use the mask tool and how to use the shape builder tool to make type 3D quicker as well as making it look more professional. One of the tutorials I watched was the squiggle type tutorial for illustrator, I decided to choose this tutorial because the end result had similar characteristics to that of Stephan’s. Stephan is a graphic designer I follow on social media and I find his work to be very inspirational.
I have inserted an image with one of my experimentations. You can see that this has a more hand written characteristic this was to follow a similar style to that of Stephan’s because it was a characteristic I really liked. I also decided to use the 3 primary colours this was so the colours contrasted each other so each colour stood vibrantly on it its own. This if I further developed it would meet the brief because it is bright and bold and would help make the university look more creative to represent the creativeness of the students. Furthermore, with this experimentation I like how the blue is situated to the back so that it gives a shadow effect so that the type looks like it is standing off the page. This I feel is more engaging to the viewer because it pops out and would easily catch the viewers eye. Finally, with this experimentation I learnt how to make a grainy background and I also learnt how to use the squiggle tool which helped me greatly with making this type. In reflection I feel the progress of the group and my own work is very good. I am also going to continue to watch tutorials so that I can broaden my knowledge and learn new skills so my work can progress further ready for our final presentation and for my work in the future.

PGCE Speaker
This week we were introduced to Mike Jackson, he was here to talk to us about teaching and how to get into it. Mike firstly briefed us on that fact that there are 3 types of teaching courses these are the Primary PGCE (core or school direct), secondary PGCE or PGCE FE. These names at first were very confusing to me, as I didn’t understand what the meaning of them was. However, I was looking forward to the presentation as teaching is an area I was considering to study. Mike then discussed the entry requirements we needed if we were to consider taking the teaching courses; These are GCSE Maths and English at grade C, plus having a C in science is required if teaching primary children. You also have to achieve a 2.1 in your degree for the chosen subject you are wanting to go on and teach. In reflection for me, this sounds like a challenge but I will aim to achieve a 2.1 or better. Mike then talked about how you have to attend an interview where you have to in fact teach in the very limited time frame provided for you. You also have to pass the QTS skills test, which in previous years you only have 3 attempts before you are locked out, but mike mentioned that due to a high demand of teachers being needed, this ban has been lifted. He then talked about how there is a huge amount of places to do a placement. If you decided to do the secondary direct route, for example, The Northway alliance, which is based in long Eaton and the David Neiper academy are placements you can attend. If you decide to go down the primary route, there are even more placements! Mike stated you don’t need to worry about getting a placement if you are accepted on to the course. In reflection for me, I feel the SD route would be more practical as this would mean a schedule of being in school 4 days a week, and are in university only one. This I feel would be better for me because I feel I would learn more from a hands on experience. Mike stressed that if that if we want to teach it would be beneficial if we went to open days, volunteered at schools and went and partake in work experience as this would put us in a better position for when we apply for the course. I found this information to be very helpful as I have now visited my old secondary school, I discussed me doing work experience at the school for 2 weeks in July. I feel this is an important thing to do, as teaching is something I am willing to go into and it would be beneficial for me to get some experience so I can get a feel to understand if this is the correct career path to take. I found this presentation to be very useful, I gained some good advice on how to apply and how to get on to the course, and I have also taken Mikes advice to apply and go on to work experience prior to even applying to the course. Overall, this has boosted my confidence in heading down the teaching route because I now have more knowledge and understanding of the different teaching routes and I feel I have most of the personal characteristics Mike motioned such as empathy, enthusiasm for my subject and a good sense of humour.
As this was a lecture that took my attention, I decided to do further research after the lecture and browsed the https://getintoteaching.education.gov.uk/. From looking at this website, I learnt further into bursaries and funding. For example, I learnt you can apply for a tax free bursary or scholarship or get a tuition fee loan. I also learnt about open days that are taking place. One placement what I learnt about from the website was “Train to teach university of green which” and even though this is far for to travel, I hope to go and visit so that I can broaden my knowledge of the teaching course.
Creative distribution Brief progress.
In consideration to my group work this week, I have decided to change my idea from working with visuals to mainly working with type. This is because the group discussed amongst the group chat that we should all show off our unique style and flare instead of pushing people into things which maybe they aren’t as comfortable at doing. So as I am more skilful with software’s than a pen and paper, I thought going down a more typographic route would be more applicable. Down below I will evidence my attempt at doing the brief in this perspective. I also did further research for inspiration and one website I found greatly useful was
http://www.thedieline.com/
this was because it show cased a large amount of type that worked effectively with visuals. This for me was very useful because even though it was mainly based on packaging, I gained inspiration from the different patterns and colours which worked efficiently with type, going over the top of them. I also started to look at one of my favourite graphic designers
https://www.instagram.com/stephanelopes/
. This is because he specialises in type as well as graphic design. I find his work to be very mind-blowing as he comes up with most quirky but creative pieces of work. I also find his work very inspirational, so looking at his Instagram page really helped to generate ideas for the

Creative Distribution week 2
A week on and our progress as a group was good. All the members of the group took on a equal amount of effort in order to complete our task for the week in coming up with initial designs. We managed to keep track of everyone’s progress by setting up a group chat on messenger. This was good as we able to work together effectively and keep each other updated. For example, this was helpful when not all of the people of our group could make it into university. This came in useful for when we arranged a meeting on the Tuesday prior to our pitch which we had to perform in front of Leo on the Friday. For instance, when everyone who was able to make it into university on the Tuesday arrived, we performed a group video call using the messenger app so we could see everyone’s progress and so we were able to give helpful feedback to everyone in the group. After everybody had seen everybody’s work and received feedback we went on to make our presentation for the pitch ready for Friday. First of all we needed to come up with a name for our idea. This took about half an hour with everyone firing snappy names what would be easily remembered until jack came up with“remember the un remeberable”. This name was catchy and fitting as our aim was to make bold, bright room numbers so it met the brief of making the university look bright and vibrant which would then show off the creativity of the students who attend the university. However, it also performed the function of making the room numbers and the rooms, more remberable so that a person is more likely to remember where their room is located so they don’t get lost. To continue as a group, we went on to make the slides on the presentation with our idea and our goals. Our goals included; Functionalitywhich aids students in remembering and locating their room, Personality– so each room number will receive its own unique design and finally Clarity– because In order to achieve our intended concept’s function, there must first be clarity! We then went on to create a slide about our inspiration, for me my inspiration came from the Moco museum which featured the work of Banksy and also from mood boards I created using Pinterest. After this we went on to create slides which featured our initial designs. After this we created a slide which discussed our chosen colour palate. After the presentation had been completed and everybody was happy with the information which was on the PowerPoint we went through and allocated people roles for our pitch. My role was to discuss my initial ideas and our chosen colour pallet. Everybody else’s roles were very similar as they too had to discuss their initial designs. However Jack was given the role to introduce the presentation and Adrias was given the role of closing the presentation. After everybody knew their roles we all went away to individually work on our speeches ready for the presentation.
Friday morning and everybody was prepared as we went into our presentation and before you I knew it was my turn to talk about my initial designs, not all of my designs were spoken about as I decided to pick the ones I felt were the best.
Here are my initial designs that I picked out to talk about in the presentation. My first initial design was done to represent the room number MS114E which is the journalism room. Here you can see that for my first room I have taken inspiration from the film Godzilla, I decided to choose this because it is very impacting as this particular scene was constantly documented by journalists and camera crews. So for me I felt by drawing this it linked well to the journalism room but also because if developed it would meet the brief because it would be creative and bold. My initial I next spoke about was my room Number MS102A, this room is the interior design room. I spoke about what I did for this room number.I had decided to again go for a visual approach with pictures and type so that it would really stand out within the university, as you can see from the visual I tried to do elements that represented the inside of a house so that you could make the link to interior design. For example, in the middle going through the number is a rough drawing of some stairs and bellow it are 3 hexagons, these are there to represent tiles as when you think of interior design it goes all the way from the furniture to the roof to the floor. As well as this I decided to make the room number large within the surrounding imagery so that it would still be easy to read the number even though a lot of the imagery is bold and powerful. My next initial I spoke about was again for the journalism room, i tried to use different composition’s within my work to try and make it look unique and creative. For example, you should be able to see parts of a woman’s face, this is because within the media and journalism sector it is  very often they have a well presented woman on air so they gain views due to it being sexually pleasing. As well as this I spoke about how I had put the quote enjoy your lie as I had crossed out the letter F. This is because with in the journalism sector a lot of the stories that are put out are twisted by gatekeepers. So I thought this linked well to journalism but it would also be something that would make the viewer stop and question to why that is there. Furthermore, I then spoke about my last initial this again was for the journalism room. Here you can see I have used similar elements like the woman and the quote, however this quote says “it’s all lies” again this is to symbolise how a lot of the media and journalism is twisted and made up. On reflection I was happy with my initials and with how I presented them as I feel they follow a graffiti style which we agreed to go off on. However, if I was to redo them I would maybe aim to make them simpler, similar to those of Banksy’s.After I had spoken about my initials I went on speak about our chosen colour theme. Our colour theme we had decide on was the colours; blue, orange, black and white. We decided on this colour theme so that all the designs followed a theme to create clarity amongst our designs. Furthermore we chose the colour blue because firstly it symbolises Derby university as it is the main colour throughout the universities branding, secondly we chose the colour because it symbolises trust, friendliness  and hope which are all good factors which we felt would represent the University of Derby well. I then went on speak about how we had chosen the colour orange. This is because orange symbolises joy, efficiency and fun which again are vibes that we wanted our work to give off. After our presentation was over we received our feedback. Our feedback was good as Leo loved the idea, however one factor that Leo didn’t like was our restricted colour scheme and he advised us on lifting the restriction so we could use endless amounts of colours to make our room numbers as bold and as vibrant as we could. This was advice we took on board as we all agreed that this was the way to go.Overall I was happy with how us went because as a group we worked well together and we all put an equal amount of work in and the pitch went as planned. I was also happy that Leo advised us to change our colour scheme because this was restriction which was making it difficult for all the team member.

Week 7
This week, we were asked to go and visit a design practitioner within the design industry. We were then told we had to record the content of the visit and write about it in our blogs. For me this seemed like a daunting task as both I and my peer Jack smith, who was going to visit the practitioner together are both not confident people. However this was a task that I feel would be beneficial, as it will enable us to build our communication skills as well as to hopefully make professional contacts. I and jack had both contacted the design Firm Linney Design, we chose to visit a practitioner from this design firm as we both knew it was a reputable company, as I had visited Linney design a few years previously for work experience. Because of this it meant that I had contacts within Linney Design, so I was able to email Jo Frost directly. Jo is a practitioner at the design firm, she has been working there for roughly 5 years after being taken on from an internship which she completed after graduating university. The Linney design firm is situated approximately 30 minutes away from my house so the journey wasn’t too long to make. Upon arrival, we were kindly greeted by the reception staff and was kindly asked to wait for Jo. After waiting approximately 10 minutes, Jo came over to us and took us to a spare room so we could do our interview. The interview took about 15 minutes. Me and jack started off the interview by asking some basic question. Our first question was “what is it like to work in industry?”
Joe sat and thought for a few seconds, until she replied that her job is great and that she loves every minute of it. Jo then discussed that she loves how with every day of work there is something new to do as you tend to have a new brief every day and these usually are very different, meaning that her job still is very interesting for her because it means she doesn’t get bored. Jo also went on to talk about how her job is very rewarding. This is due to the fact her work has been displayed on huge billboards, Packaging etc. She mentioned her most recent achievement, her help in rebranding Bella Italia and having a role in designing the new menus. I and jack both agreed that this was very inspirational and motivating as we both agreed we want to be at a standard where we can too design for big popular brands.
Me and jack then went on to ask Jo “what are the working hours like?” Jo then discussed how she typically works 9 hours a day, 5 days a week. For me this seemed like a long time, however, from talking to previous graphic designers in the past for example Lloyd stringer, they stated that there works load was so heavy that they usually had to take work home so that they were able to meet the deadlines. However, when interviewing jo she stated that she works really hard at work so that she is able to keep her work life separate, so she isn’t constantly having to work because she says that is unhealthy for anybody and we all need to have down time so we can stay on top and we can keep creating the best work possible. Furthermore, as Jo is only 25 she said she still likes to have a girly night out or just a night to chill, however she went on to discuss that she understands with having a job in the design sector, sometimes you do have to take the odd piece of work home just to make sure you meet the deadline, as it is a demanding job. She stated that she has had to work a few late nights and mornings so that she could finish the brief in time. Jo also discussed the more popular software within the design sector that is used for creating graphic design work is InDesign. This software has all the tools and functions of Photoshop, illustrator and InDesign altogether and advised us to make sure we have a good understanding of the software so we know how to use it if we are wanting to go on and get a job in the industry, because it is a software you need to know.
We then went on to ask Jo many other questions and learnt many little tips and tricks of the trade. Overall this experience of interviewing a practitioner was helpful as it allowed me to make a professional contact and allowed me to build on my social and communication skills. These are important for me and any other individual for when it comes down to getting a job. As this visit for me was very handy, I would recommend other designers of the creative sector to visit the Linney design group as it was a great experience where we gained great advice and allowed us to have a look in to what it is like as a life as a Graphic designer.

Week 6
Creative disruption brief
For week six we were set yet again a new brief. This time the brief was set by David Mcgraive. Daniel, is in fact the dean of the university. David then went on to explain to us students that we are going to make a change and we were going to change how the interior of the University at Markeaton park looks. By this, David meant our using our individual creativeness and flare to make the university look less formal and more like an arts university, where so many creative subjects are held. David went on to explain this change needs to happen as the university, when first walking in initially has the perception of being “boring and dull” especially to visitors and students. So for the project, we were told that we were to create pieces of wall art that will be situated all over the Marketon University campus. However, we were also put into teams which had already been hand-picked by the lecturers. This then meant we could work on our team skills, whilst working creatively as a team to get the best possible outcome. We were also briefed that for this particular project, we was going to be working with latest technology of augmented reality. This for me sounded fun exciting and I couldn’t wait to get going.
Firstly, when the lecture had come to a close we all met up in our groups and sat down and discussed the brief. However, there was some confusion amongst some team member to what augmented reality was as we only had a brief few minutes of David trying to explain it to us. So to clear the air my group first started to discuss and research what AR really is. From research we discovered that AR “is a direct or live view of a physical world, real world environment who’s elements are augmented by computer generated perceptual information which is based across 5 of the sensors” (Wikipedia) this then goes on to create information which then combines with the physical world to create an altered perception to what the viewer can actually see as it creates simulated view. Now that we all had a basic understanding of what AR is we decided to look at some of the possibilities you can achieve when using it. One finding found that Disney and Lenovo in fact started selling augmented reality light saber kits so that friends can have lightsabre duels with friends. This is an example that shows how AR has allowed gaming to take off as just for this particular game it makes something simple seem so realistic and exciting. https://www.theverge.com/2018/5/4/17315834/star-wars-jedi-challenges-lenovo-mirage-two-player-lightsaber-duel-updateWe also found that AR has not only transformed the world of gaming, but it has also changed how people can interact with the world. For example, we decided to research Blippar as this is the resource we was going to be using. Blippar is an AR mobile app, it is used for things such as advertising and promoting, this then connects the consumers to things such as high street brands or products. It allows the everyday little things to be transformed into rich consumer centric interactive experiences. Blippar works by allowing us to transform our very own phones into AR devices. Which enables us to transform anything in the world into an “interactive wow experience”(Blippar). It works by using mark less image recognition to recognises things such as images and graphics, these can be in many different formats such as 2D or 3D. It then creates a response on your mobile phone or device. For example, Blippar gives the example of Heinz and the ketchup bottle. For example, “the app uses invisible markers which is allocated with the Heinz front branding art, it then goes on to display a pre-programed AR on your device.” As well, Blippar says for this particular product a recipe book from Heinz appears so the user can flip through meal ideas. (blippar) This is a great example consumer interaction and it shows how we can make the world a more fun helpful and lively place from using AR.
Now that we all had done our research on AR and Blippar, we started to discuss our ideas. Our ideas varied. One example was creating mini interactive games which would be on the walls of the university. These could then be scanned using the Blippar app and it would then trigger the response on your device so that the game would digitally come up onto your screen. Another idea was to have QR codes around the university and when you scanned them using Blippar it would take you to random happy videos on the internet so that then if the consumer is feeling down it will then cheer them up. However, this will not be beneficial in making the university look fun and vibrant of what an arts school should look like. Finally, we agreed on our final idea which that we were going to focus on the different room numbers as these are bland and boring. We felt this could be a path to go down as we could make the room numbers as big and as bold as we want so that the university would look bright, vibrant and creative. We would then use the Blippar app to make interaction with the consumer, as when they scan the room number it will trigger a response by taking the consumer to something that would be practical and associated to what the rooms usage is, for example a photography room.  We thought this would be great as it would be a great way bust bored as it will give the student something fun and quirky to interact with.
We then all discussed the different themes our room numbers could be based on. We all came to agreement that the theme should be street art. For me this was great because of as I discussed earlier, I had visited the Amsterdam Moco museum, where the great graffiti artist Banksy’s work was on display. I had visual resources that I could use for inspiration when it came to designing my room numbers. I will insert my inspiration images below. After this we then discussed how we was going to complete our idea. So for week 1 of our brief our plan was that we were going to give everybody in the group 3 room numbers all of which are located at markeaton park. We then decided to give ourselves the tasks to research street art and to come up with initial sketches of our room numbers which followed our decided theme of street art. We agreed on giving ourselves 1 week to complete this before meeting up again to discuss where we were going to go next with the brief.
On reflection, the team worked really well together as we all co-operated effectively so we were all able to understand the brief and how we were going approach it. This I feel, is important because all team members were able to go away and get on with their work without worrying if they had done it wrong or not.

Creative scene
Due to the Liverpool trip being sadly cancelled from a spell of bad weather, we were then asked to write about a creative scene. This then gave me a great opportunity to talk about my visit to the Moco museum in Amsterdam at the beginning of March 2018. I decided to use this museum as my Creative scene. The expedition which was showcasing at the time was work by Banksy and Roy Lichtenstein. What drew me to this particular expedition was the two extremely talented artists, even though they are different with their styles, they both have a way of creating artwork that is very meaningful, which in effect has a huge impact on their target audience. I also decided to drift away from my local area as I put the effort in to travel to this museum and I thought it would be beneficial to me and my studies as I feel I have gained more knowledge from using the Moco museum as my creative scene as this is artwork which I feel passionately about and I felt this was a good opportunity to share my visit to the museum with you as it links greatly with my studies.
When I first entered the museum we were handed a booklet which gave us a quick brief about the expedition, so that we had a basic understanding of who Banksy was and so we had a short insight into his work and why he does it.  The expedition contained around fifty pieces of original art work by the mysterious Banksy. Banksy is an artist who is well known for his work on the outdoors, it is mainly situated in London, but it can also be found in locations all around the world. His work is so iconic that in London the maps have marks in the locations to where Banksy’s work is situated. However, Banksy has an activist nature to his work. He includes strong messages and meanings about political or social change within his work.  An example of this is located at the bottom.
Here we can see that Banksy is criticising society as it is taking a toll on consumerism. In addition to this, this piece of art work is comically representing tribal hunters that are “Hunting for grocery carts.” Banksy has also cleverly used a juxtaposition where the imagery has alternate meanings to one another. This then changes the view of the audiences perception of “consumer culture through role reversal”, (Moco Museum). However, his cynical pieces of art work are usually uncensored by what actions he takes. From my visit to the museum, I was able to find out that Banksy himself had a dig at capitalism. Banksy did this by selling his art work in Central park for 60 dollars when they usually are sold for tens of thousands of pounds.
In addition to this, I stumbled upon another iconic piece of art work which I loved. This is because again Banksy uses a juxtaposition to create a deep and meaningful message. From analysing the image upon my visit to the museum, you can see that a young girl who looks to be vulnerable, is grasping tight a large bomb. Banksy here is trying to put the message across to his audience that this is the true reality of war and it isn’t all wins and victory. He is also trying to challenge the media and the government who portray the war as being something positive, as many people within the government will see war as being positive for the power, domination and of course for the money. Furthermore, Banksy spray painted his image on to a traffic sign to challenge societies thinking as in the UK it is illegal to spray paint on signs etc. Moreover, this is because it is classed as vandalism, however apparently bombing innocent civilians is seen as acceptable and for the government it is legal.
In reflection I found Banksy’s expedition to be very eye opening as his art work holds so much depth and meaning. I also like how his style even though it is simple, is so powerful and impacting. From the materials used and the images he then sprays paints on. I think he is a very inspirational artist and he is able to make juxtaposition’s what are out of this world. These are very powerful as they entice the viewer and really gets you thinking. As a result, you have to delve in and unpick the hidden message within the artwork. As well as this, the messages strongly support Banksy’s activist nature and I think this is what makes Banksy’s work so iconic as it challenges how society thinks. I would definitely recommend anyone to go to the Banksy museum as it shows a whole new concept of meanings and artwork and how they are combined. Additionally, it brings art work into the 21thcentury and so a younger audience is enticed. This is beneficial because it allows a younger audience to know about the political world and what is happening around them. On the contrary, it is put in a format in which this target audience is likely to acknowledge because it is modern and fresh and it is not just your standard news article.
Overall I am happy I have been able to talk about my creative scene being the Moco museum, it is an experience that I feel has benefited me with opening my eyes to how effective juxtapositions are and also the how you can create simple pieces of artwork with a lot of meaning. Consequently, the activist nature of Banksy’s work I felt was the most dominant factor which made his work so inspiring, especially as I am a young adult who is growing up in a world that is full of political views.
