You know what? I failed at something. I totally, completely failed. I know that's a very random thing to suddenly post about, but I was looking through my original business plan for my writing career recently, and I realized that I've held to exactly NONE of what I had initially planned over the past year. You see, originally, I was planning to release a TON of books this year. I had it all planned out. I was going to write THIS book during THIS month and THAT book during this OTHER month, and I was going to release THIS and THAT while THIS was in the process of getting formatted, and so on and so forth. I think originally, it was a total of twenty-three books. Yes, twenty-three. Over the span of something like eighteen months. Needless to say, I was a little…overly ambitious. And COMPLETELY unrealistic in what I was capable of achieving in such a short time. I'm not saying you shouldn't be ambitious. I'm not even saying you shouldn't strive to achieve something a little above and beyond what you are normally capable of. Go for it; shoot for the moon, if you so desire. But, at least for me, I really have to learn to temper what I'm able to do with what I want to do and find that comfortable middle ground that will actually produce results. None of what I originally planned for 2020 produced results. And that was even before this crazy pandemic hit. So it's August 2020. And I'm making a new resolution to be a little more mindful of what my actual abilities are, to maybe strive to improve them, to take them in small baby steps above what I can normally do so that I feel pushed to actually Do The Thing and not put it off. And I sat down and came up with an actual, workable plan that isn't overwhelming and is actually accomplishable. What about you? What sort of things have you gotten overly ambitious about in the past that's maybe brought you stress or grief or disappointment? What did you do to move beyond those feelings of biting off more than you could chew and get yourself back on track? (These thoughts brought to you by the realization that I was supposed to release Reapers in May…and I'm still not done with writing it.)
